8 School-based Traineeships Short Courses School-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs) allow high school students to work for an employer, train towards a recognised qualification, and complete their secondary school studies. They are available across a wide range of industries and SATs provide students with increased future employment opportunities. The aim of the Barrington College School-based Traineeship program is to: engage and support students through developing their knowledge and skills required to work effectively in industry create a pathway for students pursuing further education and or employment as they transition into the working world provide a supportive environment creating a mutually positive experience for (Host) Employers and Trainees providing quality programs to link vocational training with the school sector and Australian Industry engaging with quality businesses to participate in the development of their workforce and supporting their recruitment goals improve staff retention rates for (Host) Employers Barrington College hospitality short courses provide intensive training to help advance your career, update your skills and knowledge, or meet specific legislative requirements. There are a wide range of short courses available across a broad range of industry areas. Our suite of short hospitality courses are designed to provide you with the skills you need in the shortest possible time. Courses range in duration from a few hours to a number of weeks and are offered in various attendance modes to suit your needs during the day, in the evening or on weekends. SHORT COURSES INCLUDE: PARENT / GUARDIAN INFORMATION Parental responsibilities As school-based apprentices and trainees are generally under the age of 18, their parent or guardian, who must cosign the training contract, will have some responsibilities in relation to the apprenticeship or traineeship. If your child requires assistance with their school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, there are people who can help them. The first point of contact should be their employer, their school or their SRTO. Accredited short courses Skill Sets These are usually designed for a specific purpose and to fill a need that is not met by other qualifications. They are nationally recognised. SITHFAB201 - PROVIDE RESPONSIBLE SERVICE OF ALCOHOL Responsible practices must be undertaken wherever alcohol is served or sold, including where alcohol samples are served during on-site product tastings. This unit, therefore, applies to any workplace where alcohol is served or sold, including all types of hospitality venues, retail liquor outlets and wineries, breweries and distilleries. This unit applies to all levels of sales personnel involved in the sale, service and promotional service of alcohol in licensed premises. Those selling or serving alcohol may include food and beverage attendants; retail liquor sales persons; winery, brewery and distillery cellar door staff and supplier sales representatives. 9 SITHGAM201 - PROVIDE RESPONSIBLE GAMBLING SERVICES Responsible gambling services must be provided wherever gambling activities are undertaken. In the hospitality industry, the gambling environment is usually referred to as the gaming area and is provided in a range of venues such as hotels, motels, clubs, pubs and casinos. Gambling is defined as the staking of money on uncertain events driven by chance. The major forms of gambling are wagering (racing and sport) and gaming (gaming machines, table games, Keno and lotteries). Both forms of gambling are relevant to the hospitality industry. Hospitality venues operate Totalisator Agency Board (TAB) outlets for wagering on racing and sport events. They also cover the full range of gaming activities, including the operation of gaming machines, table games, Keno and lotteries. FOOD SAFETY SUPERVISOR ESPRESSO MACHINE OPERATIONS The responsible provision of gambling services is an essential underpinning skill for all hospitality personnel involved in the sale and service of gambling activities in licensed premises, including the licensee, gaming supervisors and gaming managers when involved in operational gambling activities. The unit applies equally to frontline operational gambling personnel who operate with a limited level of autonomy and under some supervision and guidance from others. They would operate within the predefined organisational procedures and industry and regulatory authority codes of conduct. Operational job roles would include gaming attendant, table game attendant, croupier and multi-skilled food and beverage attendant. These units of competency provide a set of skills to work hygienically when handling food and to ensure the safety of food during its storage, preparation, display, service and disposal. Legislation states that all food handling premises are required to have at least 1 Food Handling Certified Supervisor. With this course you will be able to: Plan and manage Food Safety Plans Ability to supervise food handlers Authority to instruct correct food handling techniques Knowledge of food handling legislation and standards Unit Code Unit Title SITXFSA101 Use hygienic practices for food safety SITXFSA201 Participate in safe food handling procedures FOOD HANDLING This unit of competency provides skills to work hygienically when handling food. It meets the prescribed certification requirements, under some Australian State and Territory food safety laws, for individuals to work as food handlers. Learn correct food handling techniques Learn correct receiving and storage procedures Ability to work in the food industry This short-course will teach you how to make the best machine espresso coffee - the coffee that people queue for and, ensures an appreciative and loyal clientele. You ll also learn all about customer service and hygiene standards for a professional operation. This course is designed for the café operator and or worker. The emphasis on this course is on customer service and the hygiene standards expected of a quality operator. 10 PROVIDE FIRST AID The Statement of Attainment in Provide First Aid (AQF) (HLTAID003) is a nationally recognised qualification. This course is designed to supply our students with the knowledge to perform first aid to casualties. Teaching the latest techniques and revising our course content regularly to ensure we meet Australian standards, Barrington College provide industry experienced trainers who are leaders in their field. To become certified in first aid, a student must undergo practical training and assessment. Through our extensive experience in first aid training, you ll find both our public and custom-designed courses to be practical, equipping you with the knowledge, skills and confidence to perform First Aid. Reaccreditation: Current industry standards recommend this course is updated every 3 years. HLTAID001 - PERFORM CPR The Statement of Attainment in Perform CPR (AQF) (HLTAID001) is a nationally recognised qualification. This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain breathing and circulation in an adult, child or infant following cardiac arrest. Teaching the latest techniques our course content is based on Australian Resuscitation Council Guidelines. To become certified in CPR, a student must undergo practical training and assessment. Through our extensive experience in CPR training, you ll find both our public and custom-designed courses to be practical, equipping you with the knowledge, skills and confidence to perform CPR. Reaccreditation: Current industry standards recommend this course is updated every 12 months. How to apply - a quick guide YOU CAN APPLY IN TWO WAYS: Apply at the campus OR you can complete the application form 1. Fill out the application form 2. Send your completed application form to Barrington College. 3. We will review your application form, if you are accepted, you will receive a letter of offer 4. Sign and return the written acceptance of your offer to the Barrington College Admissions Office together with a payment, for the amount specified in the letter of offer. Instructions on how to pay will be explained on the letter of Offer ENROLMENT AND ADMISSION PROCEDURES Access to vocational courses is open to all students who have successfully attained the pre-requisite English language level as determined by Barrington College and met any pre-requisites. Courses will be offered if enrolment numbers are viable and human and physical resources are available. The following will be provided to students at the beginning of each course. A course outline indicating units of work, units of competency, assessment requirements, materials and equipment required A student handbook RPL process and complaints and appeals processes will be discussed Vocational outcomes and opportunities will be discussed\credit transfers will be outlined Work placement application form used ENROLMENT PROCEDURE: CREDIT TRANSFER You may be eligible for a credit transfer if you have previously undertaken training through a Registered Training Organisation. Credit transfer may be granted for one or more units or a full certificate level. Three major factors need to be considered: 1. How current the qualification is 2. Mapping to the current training and 3. If the training was undertaken with a Registered Training Organisation. If you think you may be eligible for a credit transfer you will need to provide the following: The original Statement of Attainment and/or Certificate for your educators to sight A copy of the Statement of Attainment and/or Certificate Or a certified copy of your qualification signed by a Justice of the Peace (JP) RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) Prior to enrolment, prospective students will receive a letter of offer which contains information on fees and charges, code of practice. The course guide and student handbook are available on the Barrington College website. These contain information on entry requirements, the induction and orientation procedure, refund policy, payment options and unit details are included in these documents. In order to apply for enrolment students must return the signed letter of offer. This process ensures that all fees and charges are known to students before enrolment. Course content and assessment procedures are explained and vocational outcomes are outlined in the course handbook and are covered during the student orientation procedure in the first session.
