(Access o he Arcic Ocean is available only hrough commercial our operaors; privae vehicles are no permied on he oil field.) The Dalon Highway is unique in is scenic beauy, wildlife and recreaional opporuniies, bu i is also one of Alaska s mos remoe and challenging roads. The firs 10 or 20 miles of he Dalon Highway will give you a prey good idea of wha o expec on he res of he highway as far as road condiions. Road condiions vary depending on weaher, mainenance and ime of year. On recenly rehabiliaed secions, you may find good paved road. On some secions of gravel road, he washboard can be so severe your eeh rale. Calcium chloride is used only in limied areas on he road o conrol dus; i is corrosive o vehicles and slippery when we. Gas, food, phone and lodging are available a he Yukon Crossing a Milepos J 56, he Ho Spo Cafe a J 60.3 and a Coldfoo Camp a J 175. There is also lodging in Wiseman. Alyeska pump saions do no provide any public services. Alhough noed on he map, former pipeline camps have been removed. The las dump saion norhbound unil Deadhorse is a Coldfoo. Please do NOT dump holding anks along he road. The Bureau of Land Managemen (BLM), which manages 2.1 million acres of public land along he Dalon Highway, has 1 developed campground (Marion, Milepos J 179.7) and 3 primiive campsies (Mile 60 Dump Saion, Milepos J 60.4; Arcic Circle Wayside, J 5.3; and Galbraih Camp, J 274.7) along he highway. There is also a privae campground in Coldfoo. In Deadhorse, here is overnigh parking a he Tesoro saion and Arcic Oilfield Hoel. BLM is working wih oher sae and federal agencies o consruc addiional visior faciliies along he Dalon Highway. Planned faciliies over he nex 15 years include addiional dump saions, campgrounds, inerpreive waysides, pullous and a new visior cener. Some secions of road are underlain wih plasic foam insulaion o preven hawing of he permafros. Consrucion of he 800-mile-long pipeline beween Prudhoe Bay and Valdez ook place beween 1974 and The 48-inchdiameer pipeline, of which slighly more han half is above ground, has 7 operaing pump saions. The conrol cener is in Valdez. Design, consrucion and operaion of he pipeline are managed by Alyeska Pipeline Service Company. According o he Dep. of Fish and Game, anglers should expec high, urbid waer condiions hroughou much of June as he snowpack mels in he Brooks Range, wih he bes fishing occurring during July and Augus. A former mining camp a he mouh of Slae on he eas bank of he Middle Fork Koyukuk, he name Coldfoo was firs repored in 1933 by Rober Marshall, a foreser who made a reconnaissance map of he norhern Koyukuk Region. As early as 1899 he own of Slae was sared a he mouh of he creek which bears ha name. In he summer of 1900, one of he waves of green sampeders go as far up he Koyukuk as his poin, hen go cold fee, urned around, and depared. This inciden was enough o change he firs, unromanic appellaion of he selemen o Coldfoo.
