3 Mr. Bobby Jones (l) receives the Civilian Information Professional of the Month certificate from Al Broderick, chapter Membership Committee Chairman, and Dasha Little, chapter Awards Chairman. Commander Gary M. Thomas (l), U.S. Coast Guard, is shown here with Vice Admiral Brian Peterman, Commander USCG Atlantic Area, shortly after CDR Thomas s promotion ceremony. CDR Thomas is an active member of the Hampton Roads chapter. Congratulations Gary! Glenda Bluhm (r), Chapter President, thanks RADM Anderson, Vice Commander, U. S. Fleet Force Command for his presentation at the January meeting. 3 Education/Scholarship Scholarships The Chapter will award (or renew) nine $2500 scholarships this year.
4 Seven 2007 scholarship winners will be eligible for renewals if they meet our renewal criteria of 3.3 cumulative GPA with no grade below a B-minus, but experience suggests that one or two of last year s winners will not meet these criteria. Thus, we should be able to award two to four new scholarships. New scholarship awards are not limited to graduating high school seniors. Current undergraduates are also eligible to apply. We advertise the availability of these scholarships to public school systems and counselors in the South Hampton Roads area through various channels but outreach to private high schools and current undergraduates is difficult. Please let your friends, acquaintances and associates whose children may be eligible to apply that these scholarships are available. The deadline for submission of applications is April 25, Full details of the eligibility criteria and application procedures are available online at the Chapter website: _pro.htm Science Fair The 57 th annual Tidewater Regional Science Fair is scheduled for March 8, 2008 at ODU s Webb Center. Funding for this event has depended entirely on the generosity of corporate and private donors since This private no strings attached financial support has made a difference because it has allowed the Tidewater Science Congress to eliminate public-funding restrictions that had limited participation in the Science Fair to students from school districts that had contributed funds to the Fair. The number of student projects has increased from 110 in 2004 to 288 in Each year has also seen an increase in both the number of schools and the number of school districts represented at the Science Fair. Teachers and schools who had dropped science fairs from their programs have revived school and district level science fairs now that they are assured that their students have an opportunity to advance to a regional science fair that is a stepping stone to state and national level competition. Hampton Roads Chapter members have led the way in supporting the Tidewater Regional Science Fair by contributing more than 80% of total funds donated since Please consider a corporate or personal donation to support this year s Tidewater Science Fair. For further details, check the Tidewater Regional Science Fair page at the Chapter website: ence_fair.htm or contact the Scholarship/Education Programs Committee Chairman, John Oakes by telephone at or by addressed to john.r.oakes@cox.net Chapter members who have contributed to the 2008 Science Fair to date include: General Dynamics Information Technology Northrop Grumman Mission Systems One anonymous individual member The 2008 Golf Tournament is scheduled for September 5, 2008 at Bide-A-Wee. 4
