Stier, W.F. American Press: Boston Mass Supplemental readings: Will be assigned throughout semester. Course Work Requires Blackboard Use Syllabus Review and Acknowledgement of University policies must be completed in Blackboard. This will be a part of participation grade. Course Description This course is designed to help future athletic administrators with myriad of difficulties, challenges and problems that confront them in the performance of their duties. It is also designed to address problematic and stressful situations. Course Objectives The class activities, experiences and assignments will provide opportunities for class members to: 1. Acquire a basic understanding of various areas of athletics applicable to persons involved in athletic administration. 2. Exchange thoughts and opinions relating to the practical, intellectual, philosophical and moral issues involved in administration. 3. Utilize research to understand components of administration and to improve writing and speaking skills. 4. Learn, develop, and improve in relation to your career goals and the expectations of the real world. Page 2 of 5

3 COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. Reading assignments will be assigned and discussed during class. a. Additional materials and readings will be identified and assigned throughout the semester. 2. Class discussion assignments with written and oral responses prepared. 3. Applied Projects: Finance, Policies and Procedures, Legal issues. 4. Oral Presentation over Written Research Project. 5. Portfolios. a. All aspects of the course assignments are to be shared with classmates/colleagues as outlined during class. The portfolio includes an outline of the text book. 6. Complete Professional Development Component required of all students in the CSRF Graduate Program. EVALUATION AND GRADING Applied Projects 30% Oral presentation with written manuscript 30% Class Discussion Assignments 20% Professional Development 11% Portfolio 9% Text outline is expected and to be included in the Portfolio requirements. Final grade will be computed as a percentage of the total semester points. The percentage grade will be translated to a letter grade based upon: 90% or above = A 80% or above = B 70% or above = C 60% or above = D 59% or below = F Page 3 of 5

4 ASSIGNMENTS 1. Book outline: Each student is expected to read the text. A chapter by chapter outline of the text is required. This text outline must be completed by the date posted/assigned and submitted via Blackboard. It is also expected to count as a part of the Portfolio assignment. 2. Research Assignment Criteria: As a professional, you are expected to think, write and speak clearly. You will also be required to utilize those traits to effectively identify and analyze problems, then produce creative solutions. The administrator who can effectively meet these challenges will advance more quickly, and advance further, in his/her career. It is intended the student will learn by being engaged in research, with some of the research being shared with the entire class. a. Oral Research Presentation: Each student will make an oral presentation to the class. This is an individual project, not a group project. This project will be on one of the major issues or problems in the field of athletics. i. Presentations will be a minimum of 15 minutes (not including Q & A). ii. Presentations should be well organized, thorough and supported by your research. iii. Presentations should include a PowerPoint or comparable visual aids. iv. Presentations should include proper references (citations) according to APA guidelines. v. The presentations should not only be informative, but also be interesting enough to hold the audience s attention. vi. All students will be required to complete peer evaluations of the presentations however it is expected that all students will be actively engaged and prepared and ask questions. b. Written Research Project i. All papers must be submitted as a word document typed in 12-point font, double-spaced, fully justified, with one-inch margins. ii. Paper format shall be American Psychological Association (6th edition) iii. All papers shall be accompanied by a reference list according to the APA guidelines. In addition, you should attach a bibliography at the end of the references that should include all articles read or reviewed, whether or not cited in the paper. iv. Papers must be turned in on or before the due date. Page 4 of 5

Each discussion assignment must include a written response prepared for each class oral discussion and a handout for each member of class. These responses seldom request an opinion rather they require a thoughtful and supported response. This support can come in the form of a reference from the text or other cited source. b. Responses must be prepared before the due date and handouts ready before class starts. c. All students are expected to be prepared by reading and study of material and participate and contribute to class discussion. Students are expected to be engaged during the entire class session. a. The portfolio is your collection of artifacts from this course and will include (but not exclusively): i. An outline of text book. ii. A hard copy of your completed assignments. iii. A copy of each of the assignments or summary briefs of each other students presented work/assignment. iv. All other products of this course. Page 5 of 5
