In doing so, we use the scientific method to investigate the political world to find patterns in facts we uncover and look for ways to apply those facts and pattern. Among other things, we seek to answer important political questions, to explain and predict political behavior, and to evaluate the effectiveness of public policy. This course will introduce students to the logic and processes of doing scientific research and the use of the tools of scientific research to the study of political activity and behavior. Topics covered in this course include the principles of research design, defining and measuring variables, sampling, data collection and data analysis. Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, you will demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental principles of scientific research and apply the principles to a political issue. You will produce your own original and independent product that demonstrates your knowledge and application of the research process by formulating your own research questions from a relevant theory, locating current literature to frame the topic, and then empirically studying the question using available data. Specifically, you will: 1. Understand the basic principles of scientific social research Mode of Assessment: Exams and Quizzes 2. Read, critique, and examine peer-reviewed journal articles Mode of Assessment: Annotated Bibliography and Article Review 4. 2 Supplemental Materials: Supplemental materials will be made available on Desire2Learn (D2L). Expectations: The following are some expectations required for achieving the objectives of this course: I expect you to: Read the calendar entry for each day carefully and familiarize yourself with the issues we will be covering and deadlines Attend all class sessions and remain in class until the end of the class session Complete your assignments, including the assigned readings, on time (BEFORE coming to class on the due date) Ask questions and seek clarifications to incomprehensible issues Actively participate in class discussions (exercises) by speaking up and listening respectfully Behave as an adult and treat members of the class with respect Talk with me, in advance, about any issues and/or concerns you might have Follow instructions provided for each assignment and proofread your work. If you cannot bother to proofread your work, I will not take the time to grade it You can expect me to: Plan and adjust the course as needed Provide clarity to materials being discussed including bringing my expertise and experiences to class discussions; I encourage you to bring your expertise and experiences as well as ask questions Give you feedback (both written and oral) promptly. Assignments are an essential component for success in this class and they should be taken seriously. I take them seriously and giving you timely, quality feedback is a top priority to me Treat you professionally and as an adult with the related respect of you and your views; I encourage you to express yourself freely while respecting the views and orientations of others Make myself available to you outside of class periods to help you; feel free to contact me whenever you run into difficulty with the course material or just need an advice Attendance: Most of the course materials will be covered during class lectures and discussions. Consequently, attending all class sessions punctually and remaining in class is essential for success in this class. I want you to succeed in this class and I will be working with you to ensure your success but excessive absence from class, coming to class late and/or leaving before the end of class will make that difficult (if not impossible). If you miss more than THREE (3) class sessions (irrespective of the cause) prior to mid-term (July 14, 2015), you are most likely to fail the class and will be advised to drop the course. Overall, if you miss FIVE (5) class sessions throughout the semester you will be dropped from the class and earn a grade of WF. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class session and if you are late to class and/or leave before the end of class you will be considered absent. 2
3 NOTE: If you are absent from class, come to class late and/or leave before the end of class, it will be your responsibility to make the necessary arrangement for obtaining missed lecture notes, handouts, assignments, announcements, etc. Late/Incomplete Work: Late papers or assignments will not be accepted under any circumstance except under condition of medical emergency (acceptable documentation will be required). Late is defined as not being turned in during the class period it is due. Papers can be submitted through the dropbox in D2L as Microsoft (MS) word document. However, it will be your responsibility to ensure that the paper(s) is/are MS word file, and fully and properly uploaded (and accessible to the instructor). You should also keep a copy of the paper, in case I request a hard copy. NOTE: Papers which are dropped off in my mail box, slipped under my office door or ed to me will not be accepted. Grading: The course will be evaluated using a mixture of exams, assignments, quizzes, writing, and participation as below: Exams (3) Annotated Bibliography Article Review Quizzes Final Research Paper Attendance and Participation Total NOTE: There will be NO extra credit in this class. 450 Points (150 points each) 50 Points 200 Points 50 Points 200 Points 50 Points 1,000 points The final grades will be reported as percentage of the total points (1,000) and will be graded as follows: A = % B = % C = % D = % F = Below 60% Exams: There will be three (3) exams during the course of the semester on dates specified on the course calendar below. There will be two regular exams and a final exam worth 450 points (each worth 150 points). The exams will consist of multiple-choice, short answer and application questions. The exams will be cumulative with the subsequent exam containing more questions from materials covered after the previous exam. The exams will be based on information from class lectures and the textbook. NOTE: There will be no make-up exam unless under exceptional circumstances such as illness or medical emergencies. Missing an exam without university-approved excuse or a verifiable reasonable excuse (e.g. a doctor s note) will result in a zero on the exam. Should an unexpected event occur (and you miss an exam), you MUST contact me within 24 hours with a written request and provide appropriate documentation for your inability to take the exam. I retain the sole right in granting a make-up exam based on my satisfaction with your request and the 3
4 authenticity of accompanying documentation. Normal doctor s visit does not qualify as medical emergency and will not necessitate make-up exam. Annotated Bibliography: There will be one annotated bibliography of five (5) peerreviewed articles worth 50 points. Each article MUST (1) not be one of the assigned readings in class, (2) be empirical research study, (3) be cleared with me first, and (4) be published after Article Review: To improve your writing and critical thinking skills, and prepare for your final research project, you will write two short papers critiquing a peer-reviewed journal article; worth 200 points (each worth 100 points). The first article to be critiqued will be assigned by me to the class. You will choose the second article to be critiqued on your own; from one of the five articles in the annotated bibliography BUT you still have to clear it with me. Quizzes: There will be eight (8) quizzes to be taken on-line (on D2L) throughout the semester. The quiz dates are specified on the course calendar below and the quiz MUST be taken before class on that date. There will be no make-up quiz and failure to complete the quiz before class on the due date will result in a grade of zero. These quizzes will consist of multiple choice questions and be based on materials covered in the previous class session(s). Only the top five (5) grades, worth 50 points, will be counted towards your final grade. Final Research Project: Each student will write a final research paper that demonstrates knowledge of the research process and application of principles and concepts discussed in class. Using the same dataset to be provided by me, each of you will write a final (individual) research paper on political efficacy/participation. The paper worth 200 points will be written in stages throughout the semester with introduction due on July 6 and the final paper outline due on July 13. NOTE: The rubric for grading each of the written papers/assignments, along with specific instructions on how to approach the assignments, will be discussed in class and made available on D2L. Read the rubric and the instruction carefully before you start writing any of the assignments. All written papers/assignments should be typed using the following specifications: Time New Roman font with regular style and 12-point font size One-inch margin at all sides of the page Double-spaced all content, except direct quotations longer than three lines Use the American Political Science Association (APSA) citation and reference style (Consult The Political Science Student Writer s Manual) Attendance and Participation: There will be 50 points to be assigned for class attendance and participation. The points will be assigned based on attendance to all class sessions as well as involvement in quality class discussions. Participation includes suggesting new ideas, your perspectives, and/or pointed follow-up questions to on-going discussions. It requires that you not only offer a point of view on a particular topic, but you also substantiate comments made based on your understanding of the readings and/or the issue under discussion. 4
5 NOTE: While attending all class sessions does not guarantee earning all the 50 points (quality participation is also required), missing class, coming to class late and/or leaving class early will result in losing attendance and participation points. Course Policies /Office Visits: I will make every effort to be available, outside of class periods, to help you with any difficulty you might have with the course material and/or requiring advice. My contact information is listed at the beginning of the syllabus. Office hours are periods where it is guaranteed you can meet with me in person just drop in. If those hours are not convenient, you can contact me to set up an appointment. There is one rule about appointments: If you make an appointment with me, I expect you to keep it. If I can make a special effort to meet with you, at a time and date convenient to you, you can certainly make the effort to keep the appointment. I will make it a point to meet you without appointment, outside the posted office hours, in cases of extreme necessity. The best way to get in touch with me is during office hours or by (ahammon3@gru.edu). You should expect to receive response to your messages within 24 hours, provided it was received during standard business hours during the week. Expect responses in hours for mails received on holidays or over the weekend. I will also communicate important information about the class through as well as post additional and/new information including lecture notes and class activities on D2L. It is therefore your responsibility to check your campus and visit D2L regularly for any update and essential information relating to the class. Distractions: Since we are in a computer lab, you may be tempted to wander off and check your , facebook, play a game, or otherwise check out. This will mean that you are not meeting a major expectation of the class ( listening respectfully ) and could also affect your performance in the class through the missing of important information. Eating and Drinking: Since we are in a computer lab, eating and drinking in class in NOT permitted.
