Course Description PSYC 496 is a third research psychology course in which students carry out their proposed research with faculty guidance. Students completing the course will have conducted a research project and presented the results in both an oral and written format. Students will also learn to analyze, critique, and discuss professional research. The faculty recommends this course for students who plan to attend graduate school. Prerequisite: 21 hours of psychology, including PSYC 210, PSYC 345, and PSYC 480. Fall semester. 2. Course Texts 2.1 Required text American Psychological Association. (2001). Essentials of Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences (5th ed.). Pacific Grove, CA: Wadsworth. 3. Course Objectives By the end of this course, the student who completes all assignments and attends class should be able to successfully: 1. Identify Christian and professional ethical issues related to psychological research. 2. Identify and describe the elements of an APA style research report. 3. Critique psychological research reports. 4. Conduct a two-factor psychology experiment or similarly complex research project. 5. Use SPSS to obtain ANOVA and multiple regression results. 6. Interpret factorial ANOVA and multiple regression results. 7. Write a complete research report. 8. Prepare a power point presentation. 9. Prepare a poster and research handouts. 10. Present psychological research to an audience.

Course Requirements Use this syllabus and the school calendar to develop a plan that will help you complete every assignment early or at the latest by the due date Due dates are the last dates that assignments are due and should not be considered flexible. 4.1 Attendance and communication. Follow University policy for attendance. Come often and on time. Notify me by if you plan to miss class. Turn off all electronic communication devices while in class so that all can attend to the class activities without disruption. 4.2 Tests. Plan to take all tests on time. The term tests refers to all evaluations (e.g., quizzes, exams, etc.) If you must miss a test, make arrangements with the Student Fellow or Department Administrative Assistant to take the test. Make-up tests may be different. 4.3 Assignments. Prepare all assignments using APA style and turn them in on or before the due date. If you miss a class be sure to ask your peers if an assignment was given. Not knowing about an assignment is not a valid reason for failure to complete the assignment on time. Late assignments will result in a reduction of up to 10% per day. 4.4 Professional and Ethical Conduct. Plan to comply with Christian, University, and Professional expectations about your behavior. Plagiarism, the presentation of another s work as your own, will be considered a serious violation of the Code of Ethics and may result in failure for the course. 5. Course Structure This course will be taught as a seminar. The focus will be on discussing research concepts related to the research projects of those enrolled in the class. There will be time for individual consultations. 6. Course Grades Grades will be based upon success in completing the course requirements as demonstrated by the accumulation of points on class activities. Each requirement will be weighted separately as listed below. 3 Focused Evaluations. There will be two evaluations that focus on the text, lectures, and notes. The type of evaluation will depend on evidence of learning demonstrated by the students throughout the course. Evidence includes asking and responding to questions, presentations, and written work Peer review. Each student will be assigned research papers to review and critique for research methodology, APA editorial style, and general editing. Peer review is an opportunity to improve your skills in the areas mentioned as well as prepare you for a research role for those who further their education. 6.3 Written work. Turn in your written drafts and final report by the due dates. 6.4 Presentations. Prepare an oral presentation of your research and present it to the class and at the semester research forum. Support the presentation with PowerPoint. Prepare and display your conference poster following either Great Plains or Psi Chi guidelines. Prepare and distribute one-page handouts Grade Distributions. Conference planning Research conferences that will provide you with an opportunity to become better acquainted with your profession. You should also consider joining one or more psychology organizations. Check out the web sites for the organizations and their conferences to learn more about the dates and locations, speakers, and presentation requirements. Spring Semester Great Plains Regional Conference. Plan to submit your papers by December or when the submission opens. (http://www. psych-central. com/gpconv.htm ). Evangel faculty and students usually attend and participate. CAPS international meets in the Spring of each year at various locations. The conferences usually feature well-known Christian leaders in psychology and counseling. Evangel professors will likely attend. (http://www.caps.net/ ). Psi Chi. Psi Chi sponsors regional and national conferences. The Midwest Region meets in Chicago near the end of April. Students may also consider the Southwest Regional Conference that has an earlier meeting time. The national Psi Chi meets in cooperation with the two major psychological association conferences (APS, late May & APA, late August). There are grants and awards for student and student-faculty research. Psi Chi offers guidance about graduate school admission and opportunities to meet professors and fellow students from diverse programs. ( ) Other There are many specialty areas in psychology such as Neuropsychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, School Psychology, and so forth. Final Comment The research you conduct and report should represent your greatest achievement as a psychology major. Your work can be an important step on the way to a quality graduate program in counseling or psychology. Make a plan that will help you get all your work done by the end of November. Adjust your schedule and talk with your advisor as necessary to ensure that you have the time you need to do your best work. Previous students have enjoyed their work in this class. You can too.
