CHRISTY TERANISHI MARTINEZ PSY494 Meetings: Thursdays 3 4:30 p.m. OFFICE: Madera 2723 PHONE: (805) OFFICE HOURS: Tuesdays and Wednesdays 11 am 12 pm, and by appointment. Course Description: This experiential learning course requires students to work individually and collaboratively on a research team. We will explore factors that contribute to identity, relationships, spirituality, and happiness. We will ask participants implement changes in their daily lifestyle to examine the extent to which their levels of happiness and well-being change over a 6-week period. We will apply descriptive and inferential statistics, and utilize critical and analytical thinking skills to evaluate research and statistics in the area of positive psychology. We will employ mixed methods to address research questions and analyze qualitative and quantitative data. Prerequisites: Successful completion of PSY300 and PSY301, and permission of instructor. Required Texts American Psychological Association. (2009). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (6 th edition). Washington, DC: American Psychological Association. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course you will: Know the major theories and conceptual models of positive psychology. Understand and be able to apply your knowledge of both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Be able to read scholarly peer refereed journal articles, write annotated bibliographies, and conduct literature review. Show competence in using SPSS to conduct statistical analysis to answer your research questions and test hypotheses. Demonstrate critical and analytical thinking skills in your writing, integrating theories, methods, and/or conceptual models. 1

2 Requirements: Your grades will be based on: Participation and engagement in the research project Weekly journal entries Complete three annotated bibliographies and a literature review Conduct qualitative and quantitative data collection and analyses Final reflection paper and class presentation Weekly Journal Entries In order to better understand the complexity and dynamics of happiness and well-being, it is important to reflect upon your own experiences. You are expected to write a 2-page minimum journal entry each week about your reflections as you are working on your class project. You are encouraged to think and write about the theories, methods, and/or conceptual models, and connect them with examples and insight from your own experiences and knowledge. You must post your journal entries on Blackboard by Sunday 11:59 pm each week. These will be private and not shared with your classmates. You should write your journals and keep them in a Word document each week since you will submit your final completed journal at the end of the semester on the day you present your final class presentation. Annotated bibliographies are short reviews of peer refereed journal articles. You will conduct a literature search in the library and find three journal articles related to positive psychology. They must be from peer-refereed journals (NOT magazines, Psychology Today, Men s Health or non-peer refereed journals from the internet). Write an annotated bibliography on three journal articles reviewing the theory, methods, and key findings. Your annotated bibliographies (1 2 typed pp. for each article) are due on Thursday, September 24 th. Final Class Presentation At the end of the semester, you will present your critique and reflections on your own happiness and well-being project and the data you collected. Final Reflection Paper You will write a 5-7 pp. typed reflection paper examining your observations and reflections on happiness and well-being. Include a short literature review, and provide a reference page using APA format. Your discussion and conclusions should be reflective, demonstrating your critical, analytical thinking skills. A copy of your journal and your final reflection paper are due on Thursday, December 3 rd. 2

5 Course Policies Academic Dishonesty. Academic dishonesty includes such things as cheating, inventing false information or citations, plagiarism and helping someone else commit an act of academic dishonesty. It usually involves an attempt by a student to show possession of a level of knowledge or skill that he/she does not possess. All work you submit as your own work must, in fact, be your own work. Any information acquired, learned, or copied from other source must be cited. For example, if a paper presents ideas of others, it must clearly indicate the source. Word-for-word language taken from other sources books, papers, web sites, people, etc. must be placed in quotation marks and the source identified. In accordance with the CSU Channel Islands policy on academic dishonesty, students in this course who submit the work of others as their own (plagiarize), cheat on tests and examinations, help other students cheat or plagiarize, or commit other acts of academic dishonesty will receive appropriate academic penalties, up to and including failing the course. Papers with plagiarized ideas or language will be graded F and must be rewritten with proper use of quotations and referencing. The grade of F will remain the recorded grade on that assignment. In cases where the cheating or plagiarism was premeditated or planned, you will receive an F for the course. You are encouraged to consult with me on when and how to document sources if you have questions about what might constitute an act of plagiarism or cheating. Classroom Behavior. The classroom is a special environment in which students and faculty come together to promote learning and growth. It is essential to this learning environment that respect for the rights of others seeking to learn, respect for the professionalism of the instructor, and the general goals of academic freedom are maintained. Differences of viewpoint or concerns should be expressed in terms that support the learning process, create an environment in which students and faculty may learn to reason with clarity and compassion, to share of themselves without losing their identities, and to develop an understanding of the community in which they live.
