1 PSY 4680, Industrial Organizational Psychology Course Syllabus Course Description Provides an analytical understanding of industrial/organization (I/O) psychology, one of the major applied areas of psychology. Examines the diverse field that addresses the human side of organizations. Prerequisites PSY 1010: General Psychology or equivalent Course Textbook Spector, P. E. (2008). Industrial and organizational behavior (5th ed.). Hoboken, NJ: John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Course Learning Objectives Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Define I/O psychology, describe the difference between industrial and organizational psychology, and explain the major activities of I/O psychologists in research and practice settings. 2. Describe and explain variations in research methods in I/O psychology to include research components, why research is important, and how it relates to practice. 3. Describe and explain the purpose and components of a job assessment to include work performance expectations, job analysis and evaluation, and the reliability of performance measures. 4. Analyze the components of a performance appraisal and describe and explain how and why employers and employees benefit from this process, including various processes used to gain information. 5. Compare and contrast the various assessment methods used by employers for job selection and placement and provide examples of psychological tests used in the assessment environment. 6. Discuss recent literature in the field of I/O psychological as related to trends in job analysis, organizational recruitment and retention, and the legal and ethical considerations used to recruit and select employees. 7. Explain the factors involved in workforce training and development, and the role of I/O psychologists in guiding the organization to make appropriate decisions regarding these activities for career planning and development. 8. Provide a comprehensive evaluation of the organizations environment, discern the relationships between the internal and external environments, and provide a detailed evaluation of organizations as entities for stakeholders, utilizing this theoretical approach to promote organizational effectiveness and productivity, employee motivation, positive job attitudes, and to prevent counterproductive behavior. 9. Describe the causes of accidents, discuss strategies to promote safety in the workplace, and explain how physical work conditions and schedules can affect employee health and safety. 10. Compare and contrast work groups and work teams, differentiate between the two, and describe and explain the group and team concepts of roles, norms, cohesiveness, process loss, team commitment, and team mental models. 11. Compare and contrast the approaches and theories of leadership and power and differentiate between the two in organizations to include theoretical models and organizational application variations. 12. Summarize the research related to organizational development and organizational theory and indicate how this information can be helpful to promote quality organizational life and productivity. 2 Credits Upon completion of this course, the students will earn three (3) hours of college credit. Course Structure 1. Summary of Course Unit: summarizes key issues in the assigned chapters and is supplemented with additional readings or Internet sources to provide broader subject matter application and professional relevance. 2. Unit Learning Objectives: details are available in each course unit. 3. Key Terms: are provided to direct your attention to important subject content within the Course Unit. 4. Textbook and Supplemental Reading Assignments: include approximately 1-4 textbook chapters in each Course Unit. Assigned readings are not limited to textbook chapters but should include supplemental books, professional journals, and/or Internet sites. 5. Unit Assessments: Students are required to take unit assessments at the completion of each unit. 6. Research Paper: information and specifications for the Research Paper is provided below. Your Research Paper Outline is due by the end of Unit IV, and the completed Research Paper is due in Unit VIII. 7. Ask the Professor: This communication forum provides you with an opportunity to ask your professor general or course content related questions. 8. Student Break Room: This communication forum allows for casual conversation with your classmates. Research Paper In choosing a topic for your research paper, you may use any subject from the index, from the table of contents, any topic discussed in the book, or some other connection that you see. Some examples of suitable topics include the history of IO, research design, job analysis, factors affecting job performance, selecting employees, training methods including electronic / internet training, motivation, alienation, job satisfaction, organizational citizenship, occupational stress, work teams, decision making, decision making in critical situations, decisions and standard operating procedures, leadership and more! If you have any questions, I am often open to original topics, feel free to contact your professor. After selecting a topic from this course, then locate and summarize two studies related to the topic. Develop a word research paper (about 5 pages plus reference and title page) for this course. Your paper must incorporate 2-3 reputable research sources, such as peer-reviewed professional journal articles or other professional resources related to your topic, and no resources may be older than seven (7) years old. NO WIKIPEDIA or anonymous articles or websites allowed. An outline of your paper must be submitted prior to the completion of Unit IV. Please make sure your outline has been approved by your professor before beginning your paper. NOTE #1: You will work on developing your research paper starting with Unit I and throughout this course. Your paper is due no later than by the close of Unit VIII, but it can be submitted at any time AFTER you submit an outline of your paper and it is approved by the professor. NOTE #2: If you do not submit the research paper outline concurrent with the applicable unit (In this case Unit IV); in time to allow instructor feedback BEFORE submitting the research paper, you will miss important professor feedback in the development of your research paper. Submit the Course Research Paper typed in MS Word using the APA style format, double-spaced with 1-inch margins (top, bottom, and sides). The project must be submitted in 12pt Times New Roman, and with proper APA headings. Submit your research paper assignment by uploading it through Blackboard, located through the View/Complete link in Unit VIII. Do not your final research paper assignment directly to your professor. By using Blackboard, your university record will automatically be updated to indicate you have submitted your assignment; and the assignment will be provided to your professor for grading. APA Guidelines CSU requires that students use the APA style for papers and projects. Therefore, the APA rules for formatting, quoting, paraphrasing, citing, and listing of sources are to be followed. A document titled APA Guidelines Summary is available for you to download from the APA Guide Link, found in the Learning Resources area of the mycsu Student Portal.
