1 Project #: 1 Whirlpool Corporation Appliance Manufacturer/Distributor West Miami Dade Process Modeling & Improvement Required coursework: EIN 4314 Work Design Useful coursework/skills: EIN 4451 Lean Production Systems Other required skills: Visio TBA Project Advisor: Whirlpool Corporation is a major manufacturer and distributor of household appliances. Manufacturing takes place in the US, Mexico, Brazil, India and China among other countries. The office in Miami serves the Caribbean/Central American market. This office has several departments that require more organization and understanding of business activities. There are a limited number of process maps, flow charts, SOPs or training materials documenting AS-IS business processes in the different departments. The office is in need of in-depth process modeling of its internal functions as well as the way it should interface with the client. Some of the departments include: Product Development, Sales, Sales Administration, Service, Logistics, Finance, Procurement, and Marketing. Priority departments to be studied would include Sales and Sales Administration. The deliverable desired is to have a documented overview of the functioning operation from beginning to end of the product life-cycle including, but not limited to: Process mapping of each department and interconnection to other departments Workbook/binder that would explain each function and include any forms/documents that might be needed. Work instructions on how to conduct specifically identified activities. Recommendations for improving process efficiency / eliminating non-value added activities. This project was submitted by Natalia Remolina. 2 Project #: 2 Propulsion Technologies International FAA approved repair station specializing in precision repair of aerospace (aircraft & helicopter) engine components. Miramar - Broward Production Capacity Improvement Required coursework: EIN 4314 Work Design; EIN 4451 Lean Systems; Useful coursework/skills: EIN 3235 Eval. Data I; ESI 4244 Eval. Data II Other required skills: MS Visio, Minitab # of Students: 3 PTI is a FAA repair station specialized in the repair of parts from multiple aircraft engines, among other services. The company is a joint venture between General Electric Aviation (GE Group Cincinatti, OH) and Snecma (SAFRAN Group - France). The company recently moved to a state-of-the-art facility in Miramar, FL, where it processes a diverse array of aerospace component repairs, in particular, turbine blades. The company is rapidly developing its leading product line that repairs the fan blades of the CFM56 engine. This product line is in the process of developing and qualifying (receiving approval) for a new repair for the CFM56-7B fan blade called Long Leading Edge Patch ReplacementToday the line is capable of handling 2 to 3 CFM56-7B LLE blades per day. The goal is that the line can be able to handle 40 blades per day. This project has a very aggressive schedule. The repair is planned to be qualified by October 2010 after which the line will gradually ramp up to handle the repair. For this purpose, PTI has requested FIU for a team of IE students to help with the project. PTI has offered to extend an internship position to one of the potential team members given the speed of the project. The other two students would work on the project as a team, but would not be expected to work the same amount of hours as the intern. However, they would expected to work as a team in support of this effort, while executing their Senior Design Project. General goals of the project: Increase production capacity from 2 to 40 CFM56-7B LLE blades/day Obtain maximum TAT of 21 calendar days Reduce costs of production by minimum 30% Limit rework rate to maximum 5% at end of project FIU Project Work Scope: the FIU team would become part of the larger project/effort o support this increase in capacity. Phase 1: (Fall) Start-up phase the team will be asked to work on the following (Fall Term): Perform Risk Assessment Production capacity planning and resource allocation/utilization Line balancing (time studies, Takt time, visual production management tool) Phase 2: (Spring) Improvement phase the team will be asked to work on/support the following efforts: Value stream mapping Process ergonomics, safety and possible EHS risks Implement process control Total Preventive Maintenance The company would like to receive the resumes of students interested in this project. Please provide them to asap.

The company wants a team of FIU IE students to conduct a complete Lean Analysis of the machine assembly process, including a Value Stream Map (as-is and to-be) among other deliverables, to identify opportunities to eliminate waste. The goal is to reduce missed or defective shipments. Due to the dynamic nature of our business many times we are required to change shipping destinations at the last minute. 2. 4 Project #: 4 Carrier InterAmerica Corporation Distributor of Air Conditioning Equipment Dade Process Modeling & Improvement Required coursework: Useful coursework/skills: MS Visio Other required skills: Excellent Organizational Skills Carrier InterAmerica sells and services Carrier and other Air Conditioning equipment from its Miami office, supporting 33 distinct countries in Latin America. The warranty cycle/process had transitioned from our Parts & Aftermarket team to our Operations side of the business. We are re-evaluating how to handle the warranty processing for our office. Warranties are handled based on documentation and a predefined process. We are looking at improving the process, streamlining it, providing better customer service and revert back to the days when the data talked back to us about the sourcing of our products based on these transactions. In Puerto Rico we are transitioning warranty processing from an Operations function to a Service function due to the interaction with end users. We also would like to evaluate this portion of the process. 2. Technology permits us to carry our information and data with us in our computers. As these instruments either perish or may be stolen, we have been faced with the challenge of how exactly do we handle our electronic documentation. We are interested in developing & defining a standard work that would assist various areas in the organization to catalogue and store shared files. If it s a type of document that already exists, follow xyz steps in naming and filing your information. If the document and/or data does not have a home then we need a standard work that would give us a series of steps to follow in the creating of a naming convention of said document. Right now data and documents are located in more than 10 to 15 distinct areas of the organization, we need to combine this information to create one view per customer, somewhat of what a CRM would do electronically. Contact: Ms. Mayra Casanova (HR Manager and FIU Alum) Phone: Mayra.casanova@carrierenterprise.com Address: 3450 NW 115 Avenue Doral, FL Apraez,Alejandra a.apraez@yahoo.com a_apraez@hotmail.com
5 Project #: 5 AAR Landing Gear Services Aircraft Landing Gear Repair Station West Miami-Dade Process Modeling, Improvement, Optimization Required coursework: ESI 3321,4322 O.R. I & II, EIN 3365 Facilities Design, EIN 4334 Production Planning & Control Useful coursework/skills: EIN 4451 Lean Production Systems. Other required skills: Visio, Xcel, Process mapping TBA # of Students: 3 AAR Landing Gear Services is a full-service aircraft landing gear overhaul facility dedicated to the repair and overhaul of aircraft landing gear, wheels, brakes and actuators for a great number of commercial and military aircraft. Its facility houses all the machinery, electroplating equipment, systems and personnel needed to perform the entire job under one roof. The general area of this project involves gear induction and scheduling. The facility processes about 120 landing gears a month. When a landing gear arrives at the facility, it is inducted or entered into the system. About 4 gears are inducted daily into the system on average. It generally has an expected completion/delivery date which was agreed to with the customer in advance. To maintain customer satisfaction and his aircraft flying, the landing gear must be repaired and shipped by the promised date. Induction Scheduling- The goal of this project is to better understand the processes or actions associated with inducting work into the facility. To achieve this, the team will have to understand, capture, model and analyze the different areas involved in gear repair/overhaul, including planning & disassembly and the action triggers associated with these processes. It is believed that the action triggering that takes place is not completely efficient. Therefore, downstream processing areas are not properly prepared for the work coming down the road. The project seeks to make the induction process much more efficient. The project will entail understanding the induction AS-IS process, measuring and evaluating the process for inefficiencies, develop recommendations for efficiency improvement along with corresponding validation, implementation methods and economic impact. This project may utilize specific IE skill sets including (but not limited to) operations research, process mapping, engineering economy, and facility optimization.
