15 Child Care Hornell YMCA 15 CHILD PROTECTION INITIATIVE We want all children and teens to be safe. The safety and protection of the children in our care is our primary concern. Unfortunately, child sexual abuse does exist and we must partner together to protect our children. The YMCA s Child protection Steps: >>Screening of staff including national criminal background checks, reference checks, and behavioral interviews. >>Child abuse prevention training. >>Careful supervision and monitoring of our programs. >>Emphasis on our obligation as mandatory reporters of suspected child abuse. >>Established YMCA guidelines for appropriate and inappropriate physical and verbal interactions with children. >>Program design which prevents staff and volunteers from being alone with a child where they cannot be observed by others (when possible). >>Policies which limit staff contact with children outside of YMCA programs where one-adult/one-child situations occur. Steps parents must take to protect children: Pay attention to changes in your child s behavior such as disturbed sleeping or eating patterns, fear of a certain person or place, and discomfort with physical contact. Report concerns you have, especially any staff member who breaks our child protection rules by calling To learn more about our rules visit hornellymca.com. Observe your child s programs by dropping in and asking questions. Talk to your child about his or her experiences in YMCA programs, school, sports, church and other activities. Educate yourself! Learn more about protecting your child. Control who you allow to have isolated interaction with your child and watch for signs of your child receiving special attention that other children or teens are not receiving, including favors, treats, gifts, rides, increasing affection or time alone, particularly outside the activities of the YMCA. Trust your instincts! Don t wait to tell us if something seems strange. Speak up! Facts More than 90% of abuse happens by people that youth know and trust (family friends, neighbors, group leaders, family, etc.) Abusers often become friendly with their victims and families, earning trust and gaining alone time with the child. More than 80% of abuse cases occur in one-adult/one-child situations.
