2 Time is an elusive concept but one of its constants is change and that is profoundly true in the world of design. A competent designer creates evolutions of what we already have, a good designer recreates our environment in ways that help us see familiar things in a new way but a great designer makes the world become a different place altogether. For great talents the process of change is like wind in the sails of a ship it propels them forward and leads them to revelations and insights that change the way we see and experience the world. The German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer once said that talent hits a target nobody else can hit, whereas genius hits a target nobody else can see and as educators, the faculty of the Hong Kong Design Institute is committed to giving its students the most powerful sense of vision and creativity combined with a solid foundation in skills and character. We cannot guarantee that our students will emerge into the world as geniuses as defi ned by Schopenhauer although some have but we will make sure that they graduate as competent designers with the skills required to become good designers and the tools they need, both practical and emotional, to discover if they have a genius within. The courses we offer and the international reputation that we have established through our visiting scholars, exhibitions programme and partnerships with overseas universities ensure that our students enter the workplace ready to make new worlds and fresh perspectives. The emerging voices of design that we nurture will be the ones who help shape the future of design. As design shapes the way we live and work the expectations we have of our students and ourselves are high, but that s as it should be for a school whose mission is to create the talents for tomorrow, the young men and women who will have the chance to make our world more beautiful, effi cient and sustainable.

17 All students of the two-year Higher Diploma programmes will navigate through interdisciplinary design core modules in their studies. They provide a solid framework for cultivating their art and design know-how in their chosen study pathways as well as fostering lifelong passion for creative engagement. There are three major areas: Creative Thinking, Cultural Studies, and Aesthetics and Semiotics. Discipline Core Modules Creative Thinking motivates students to adopt diverse modes of thinking in their disciplines through theory and practice. It actively explores hemispheric and divergent thinking to facilitate defi nition and analysis of design problems to the generation of ideas, concept development and evaluation. These thinking skills, which are fundamental for creative practitioners, are demonstrated and tested through active class exercises as well as projects. Cultural Studies encourages critical understanding of how culture inspires today s arts and design practices. It enriches students research skills in reading cultural issues with respect to social, creative and sustainability contexts. The modules also nurture their aesthetic judgement in various cultural contexts. Design Foundation Studies Aesthetics and Semiotics inspires understanding and application of aesthetics and semiotics in various design disciplines. It explores systematic ways of studying aesthetics and analysing symbols objectively through observation, recognition, classifi cation and evaluation of natural and manmade objects. Gathering inspiration from their daily experience and social environment, students learn creative ways of introducing symbolic meaning in their work. Pang Hiu Man 30 31
