2 LearningPoint System Learner Workbook Overview Introduction The purpose of this workbook is to provide an overview of LearningPoint, Brown s new professional development and compliance learning management system, and to provide end Learners with basic information to request and launch learning objects such as instructor-led training and online modules. 4 What is LearningPoint? Introduction LearningPoint is Brown s new, robust professional development and compliance learning management system (LMS). Diagram The following diagram illustrates the key details of LearningPoint. The table below provides detailed information on each item Item 1 This new system is replacing the current training registration system, training.brown.edu. 2 It is delivered via a software as a service (SaaS) model similar to Gmail and Workday by Cornerstone OnDemand. 3 LearningPoint s primary focus will be to support professional development and compliance training for Brown s workforce comprised of staff, faculty and student workers. 4 This new system will provide a single point of access to instructorled training registration and administration, e-learning delivery and more. 5 What is LearningPoint?, Continued Then/Now Review the table below for details regarding old and new system terminology. Training.brown.edu-a homegrown event registration system. Course - s of training programs visible to instructors and only visible to learners once the course is scheduled as an event for which Learners can register. Event- An instructor-led training program that has a specific scheduled date, time, and location. Learners are able to view and register for an event. My Registration A generated record of a learner s registration actions within the system. Register - Clickable link that leads the learner to the registration form to submit to complete the registration process within the system. LearningPoint LearningPoint- A learning management system, or LMS, is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, and reporting of training including classroom, online and other types of learning objects or forms of training. Event- A course description. LearningPoint hosts a fully searchable catalog that includes: Course s s of other Learning Objects Online Modules Downloadable Handouts Electronic Acknowledgements Sessions- Specified scheduled occurrences of events, i.e. with scheduled dates, times, and locations. My Professional Development Inbox - Records a learner s activity and progress within the LMS. 6 System Overview Introduction LearningPoint is a multi-functional system that has many exciting features. In order to become familiar with this new LMS it is important to be aware of some key details. Important Details LearningPoint is available to host professional development and compliancerelated learning objects such as: Instructor-led training Online modules Workbooks Guides Other materials Related Terms The following are related terms with additional details for clarification. Term Professional Development Compliance-related Learning Objects This refers to the development of knowledge, skills and competencies needed for Brown s workforce to perform effectively in their current or future positions. These are defined as learning objects required and in adherence to federal, state, local or university regulations and/or policies. Important Dates Effective June 30, 2012, training.brown.edu will be decommissioned. Other Training In preparation for the decommissioning of training.brown.edu, staff in departments and groups who currently use training.brown.edu for event registration, will be provided with Google Forms training beginning in January of December 2011 LearningPoint System Learner Workbook Page 6

7 LearningPoint System Tour Overview In order to better understand the LearningPoint System, it is important to view key screens along with their detailed descriptions. LearningPoint s The following table provides a list of important LearningPoint screens with a brief description. Single Sign-On Using single sign on technology, utilize Brown s web authentication tool, Shibboleth, to log in. When prompted, simply enter in your Brown short id and password to access the LMS. 8 LearningPoint s (continued) Welcome The Welcome page or Home page is a where you access learning objects (forms of training). You can search, request, or launch training from this page. Examples of assigned trainings include Sexual Harassment Training which is required for compliance purposes and upcoming Workday Training. Any assigned training will appear in this section of the page. For any assigned training, click on the associated action to launch. Click on a specific calendar date to browse for training available on any particular day. Click on view all located just below the small calendar to access a larger searchable calendar. Go To Search (cont d) On this page, you can search for specific types of Learning Objects (icons): Icon Name Event Instructor-led training Online Class Training that is provided online Curriculum Grouping of learning objects Material Learning objects that you can read/review in order to complete part of your training - materials frequently include workbooks, policies, and websites to review. 21 Glossary of Terms Introduction The following section provides detailed information on terms used within LearningPoint. This glossary may be used as a reference tool as you continue to learn about this new system. Event Transcript Term Electronic Acknowledgement Learning Object Widget Curriculum LMS Dashboard Definition A course description. LearningPoint hosts a fully searchable catalog that includes: Course s s of other learning objects Online Modules Downloadable Handouts Electronic Acknowledgements Provides the title and status of learning objects a learner has taken or is in the process of taking. This is an electronic signature attached to a learning object. By completing an electronic acknowledgement or signature, a learner is indicating completion of the required action (e.g. read and understand a new policy). Anything from which we learn including instructor-led training sessions, workbooks, online training, tip sheets and other documents. The section headers on the homepage of LearningPoint. Multiple learning objects linked together to be completed A learning management system, or LMS, is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, and reporting of training including classroom, online and other types of learning objects or forms of training.
