1 Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education Maynard Institute MediA Academy
2 MAYNARD INSTITUTE About the Program The Maynard Media Academy is an intense, immersion program in management, leadership and entrepreneurship. It has a track record of helping new media managers achieve success in a competitive, evolving environment. This innovative training experience recognizes the need to increase the number of managers of color in the news industry. This program differs from other industry management training programs because it is aimed at filling the ranks of entry-level supervisors. This program can serve managers from across all functions, including editorial, sales and product development. Run in partnership with the Nieman Foundation at Harvard University, faculty includes top media leaders and professors from the. Teaching methods include the famous case study method, small group work and discussion with high-achieving peers. Training includes two weeklong in-person seminars at Harvard and a self-directed online component developed by Maynard and hosted by the Poynter Institute s NewsU. The training focuses on three areas. Management Tools: communication, conflict resolution, performance management Entrepreneurship: business plans, product development, marketing, strategy Leadership: vision, judgment, drive, focus Ethical decision-making and valuing diversity are taught across all topics. All participants receive a detailed managerial assessment. This individualized report is based on a detailed survey of their management competencies. Participants receive this report on their arrival for the program. The report lists strengths with suggestions on how to reinforce those assets and suggests solutions to address improvement areas. Areas of assessment include: judgment, planning, adapting to change, customer focus, relationship management and coaching others.
3 Media Academy Alumni Testimonials My experience at the Academy was great. Coming here, I really didn t know what to expect. However, as the week progressed and I listened to the different speakers and professors, I gained a better understanding of what I can do to be a better listener and communicator at my newspaper. Already I feel I ve grown personally and professsionally. Roland Sondia, Circulation Operations Manager, Pacific Daily News-Guam This program is not only invaluable this program changed my life. I will never be the same manager I was when I got off the plane in Boston and headed to my hotel. Melissa Hanna, Assistant News Editor, Athens (Ga.) Banner-Herald No matter what level of journalism you ve reached, sessions at the Maynard Media Academy will re-energize, restore and reinvent you. There s no way you can return to your media companies and not make them stronger, more efficient and smarter. Todd C. Duncan, North Fulton Bureau Chief, Atlanta Journal-Constitution This has been a great experience! The quality of the sessions and the level of the presenters made it the best of the best. Everything I learned in these ten days is going to help me improve my working life, making me a better manager. Patricia Muñoz, Editor, Nuestra Comunidad/Gannett Perhaps the program s most enduring quality will prove the simple act of gathering peers from all over the nation, and indeed the world, to build relationships that will continue to produce benefits across companies, markets and cultures. Joaquin Fernandez, Video Producer, The State The Maynard Media Academy has not only re-energized my faith and love for what I do, but also given me new perspective on the business of business. I m looking forward to putting the skills I ve learned to use in my newsroom and with my team members. Kathy Lu, Neighbors Editor, Roanoke (Va.) Times I confess I started the program fearing I would just hear a lot of corporate-speak and not a whole lot of practical information. After just one session, I realized I had already learned a wealth of valuable lessons for confronting situations in my newsroom. Harold Goodridge, City Editor, Stevens Point (Wis.) Journal
