3 PROFESSORS Tom Coyle Tom Coyle has an MBA from Georgia State University in Management and B.S. in metallurgical engineering from the University of Tennessee. He is also pursuing a Ph.D. in international business from The University of Texas Pan American. In addition, Coyle has 30 years of industrial experience in all facets of manufacturing. He worked for Kemet Electronics for 23 years and his last position, prior to retiring, was a vice president and managing director of Kemet s Monterrey, Mexico facilities. Coyle s research has been published in the Journal of World Business and the Journal of Management and Entrepreneurship. He has also made presentations at professional associations including the Academy of Management, the Society of Business Disciplines and the Southwest Academy of Management. Manuel Alcocer Manuel Alcocer has a Master in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&I-Kingsville and a B.S. in electrical and mechanical engineering from Ibero-American University in Mexico City. From 1966 to 1980, Alcocer worked in the pharmaceutical industry in Mexico City in various positions related to the manufacturing support as well as logistics, handling of raw materials and finished goods. After managing a fabrication of hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders facility in 1982, Alcocer moved to Brownsville to establish border operations. He later transferred to the Maquila Industry joining EATON Corporation in Matamoros. Alcocer has also been involved in facilities maintenance, construction, environmental management, waste water treatment plants and waste recycling programs in his more than 40 years of industrial experience. Anil Singh Anil Singh has a Ph.D. in information systems and a minor in production and operations management from The University of Texas at Arlington. He also has a Master in Information Systems from The University of Texas at Arlington, a Master of Management in Finance from Goa University, India, and a B.S. in physics from Goa University, India. Singh worked for Sigma Input/Output Tech Pvt Ltd., Hyderabad, India, where he developed financial applications and integration modules. He has also worked for Prashanthi Electronics and Communication Engrs, Goa, India, where he managed fund mobilization for working capital needs, purchase liaison with suppliers, and was involved in the daily operation of the firm. Singh has published in Supply Management and some of his articles were presented at the Annual International Meeting of the Decision Sciences Institute. 4 Methodology Logistics, Value Stream, and Supply Management (LVSS) Certificate Program This certificate program has been developed by a committee comprised of The University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College faculty and members of the Matamoros Maquiladora Association. The content is tailored to meet the needs of first line supervisors and materials/logistics specialists. The general scope of the material will be broad enough to give participants a big picture approach so they may see how their individual jobs affect organizational cost, quality, and customer service. In addition, the tools taught in this program will be sufficiently specific so that participants may apply the tools to their daily jobs. Course Overview The Logistics, Value Stream, and Supply Management Certificate Program will be divided into eight modules which will vary in class time from 4 hours to 12 hours. The total contact hours are 60. Participants will be given a certificate of completion for each specific module; additionally, those participants who complete all eight modules will be given a certificate of completion in Logistics, Value Stream, and Supply Management Fundamentals. A summary of the module times is as follows: after a shipment leaves a facilities dock, it goes to customs. The purpose of this module is to familiarize attendees with the basic process of importing and exporting items. The fundamental knowledge of the process and general requirements can greatly speed the time through customs and minimize problems with international shipping. Prerequisites - None List of topics included in this module Export management processes and procedures Governmental controls and compliance Licensing of products Documentation Commercial invoices Traffic procedures Import management practices and processes Government controls and compliance. Preparation and understanding of import documents: º Customs invoices º Packing lists º Commercial invoices. 1. Fundamentals of Supervision 8 hours 2. Ethics 4 hours 3. Fundamental Math Tools, Statistical 12 hours Process Control, and Queuing Theory 4. Supply Chain Forecasting 6 hours 5. Inventory Fundamentals 8 hours 6. Facilities Overview 8 hours 7. Role of Technology in Supply Chains 6 hours 8. Fundamentals of Import and Export 8 hours Total hours: 60 hours Objective The objectives of this program will be to provide participants with the knowledge and tools in topics related to the movement and storage of goods which will result in Lower operating costs Process cycle time reduction Improved teamwork within and among organizations 1 6
5 6. Facilities Overview Duration: 8 hours Achieving the desired throughput and productivity depends on a number of factors. Most of them are related to facility design. This module covers the most fundamental topics in facility design. They will be covered at reasonable levels. Exercises will be included. Role of Information Technology in Supply Chains Duration: 6 hours Information is crucial to the performance of a supply chain because it provides the basis on which supply chain managers make decisions. IT consists of tools used to gain awareness of information, analyze this information and execute on it to increase the performance of the supply chain. Role of IT in supply Chain Supplier Relationship Management Risk Management in supply Chain Customer Relationship Management Supplier Relationship Management Supply Chain IT framework Future of IT in supply Chain Industry cases and examples 8. Fundamentals of Import and Export Duration - 8 hours (4 hours for import and 4 hours for export) Prior to a shipment arriving at a manufacturing site, it passed through customs; conversely, 1. Fundamentals of Supervision Duration - 8 hours The overall view of an organization is presented and the major functions of each group (finance, marketing and operations) are discussed. Also, the importance of supervisory functions is presented. (Note - in addition to the topics listed below, modules in Spanish which have been successfully presented in communication, planning, organizing and controlling are available). Prerequisites - None List of topics included in this module 2. Ethics Overview of an organization Overview of supervisory roles Managing in different cultures Leadership Motivation Duration - 4 hours Understanding proper conduct in the business environment is critical to the success of an organization. Ethics in its simplest form is doing the right thing and while this sounds straight forward, when this phrase is applied in a global and multicultural environment, it has many meanings. This module is designed to expose the attendees to different ethical dimensions and introduce them to traps called ethical dilemmas. The role of managers and expectations when confronted with ethical dilemmas is presented. Prerequisites - None List of topics included in this module Definition of ethics Ethical constructs (individual, utilitarian, right view, etc.) Ethical views in different cultures Ethical dilemmas Case studies incorporating all the above 3. Fundamental Math Tools, Statistical Process Control, and Queuing Theory Duration (12 hours total this will be two six hour sessions) Prerequisites - basic understanding of mathematical concepts 5 2
6 Management Science entails a scientific approach to solving management problems. This approach to problem solving requires the use of a set of quantitative methods. In this module, a participant will be introduced to the basics for the development of skills that will help support and improve decision making in the public and private sectors. Mathematical Tools: (4 hours) Review of the most common mathematical models used in decision making in the real world that will include: Quantitative Analysis Probabilities basics Decision Tables and Trees Linear Programming and Trends The format of the module will be lectures and case studies. Participants will be able to share problems that might be analyzed with the above tools. Queuing Theory (4 hours) The study of waiting lines by using mathematical tools to evaluate the processes cost and the impact on the economics portion of a business. The study will include: Waiting line cost analysis Cost of providing a service Queuing systems configuration Staffing service and/or manufacturing processes Statistical Quality Control (4 hours) The module will concentrate on the impact of the quality concept of all activities of any kind of business and could be focusing on the participant s field of the business. Identification of the process variables Data gathering Sampling techniques X, R, c and p - charts Calculation of Control Charts Limits Chart interpretation Corrective actions and Process Control 4. Supply Chain Forecasting Duration: 6 hours Manufacturing companies have been using Forecasting for Demand Planning in an uncertain environment. With the use of statistical tools we will cover forecasting Methods, Forecasting model types, Estimating trend, and Short term forecasting Role of forecasting in supply chain Characteristics of forecasts Forecasting methods Forecasting model types Role of IT in forecasting Time series forecasting methods Measures of Forecast Error Estimating trend Industry cases and examples 5. Inventory Fundamentals Duration: 8 hours This module covers the role that inventory plays in a supply chain and actions that managers can take to decrease inventories without increasing cost or hurting the level of product availability.
