1 Master of Financial Management: Faculty Bios Vikas Mehrotra A.F. (Chip) Collins Chair and Professor of Finance Department Chair, Finance and Statistical Analysis Vikas Mehrotra has been a faculty member at the University of Alberta since 1992, after graduating from the University of Oregon with a doctorate in Finance. Dr. Mehrotra s work deals with corporate restructuring, capital structure, and financial markets. His studies have been published in leading finance journals such as the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, and the Review of Financial Studies. Dr. Mehrotra has consulted for organizations such as the Alberta Energy and Utility Board and the Department of Finance s Wise Person s Committee on the Canadian securities environment. He is currently department chair of Finance and Statistical Analysis at the Alberta School of Business at the University of Alberta. Dr. Randall Morck Stephen A. Jarislowsky Distinguished Chair and Distinguished University Professor of Finance Randall Morck holds the Stephen A. Jarislowsky Distinguished Chair in Finance at the University of Alberta School of Business, and is a Research Associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He graduated summa cum laude from Yale in 1979, and earned a PhD from Harvard in 1986, to which he returns periodically as a visiting professor. Professor Morck has published over 70 articles on corporate governance, corporate ownership, and corporate finance in academic journals such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Finance, and Journal of Financial Economics. His research papers include some of the first systematic investigations of corporate governance, and are cited in more than 1,500 other research papers. Professor Morck has served as a consultant to the Canadian and U.S. governments, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund on corporate governance and other economic issues. He is a frequent speaker at academic, business, and government seminars and conferences in Canada and abroad.
2 Dr. Amit Monga Executive Professor of Finance Dr. Amit Monga, is an active angel investor who has previously worked as an investment banker, venture capitalist and has successfully founded and sold a US based on-demand software company. He currently holds an Executive Professor of Finance appointment at the School of Business, University of Alberta, and is also the Chairman & Managing Director of Sarapoint Global Ltd., an international advisory firm that assists private and public companies with capital markets positioning and executing growth strategies. Most recently, he founded Baanto, a Toronto based 3D tracking technology company with applications in gaming, touch-screens and interactive white boards. Dr. Monga has extensive corporate governance experience and has previously served on the boards of venture funds and private companies. He currently serves on the board of Alberta Innovates: Technology Futures, an agency funded by Alberta Government to promote innovation in the area of technology, and is a member of the Business Advisory Council at the University of Alberta School of Business. An active supporter of arts and education, he is a supporter of Bell Lightbox and also member of its Campaign Committee. He has also endowed scholarships to support excellence in capital markets and venture capital at the University of Alberta. Dr. Monga is a frequent contributor to the Financial Post, where he writes on venture capital, private equity and M&A. Gary R. Smith, Ph.D., CFA Executive Professor of Finance Gary Smith joined the faculty of the Alberta School of Business as an Executive Professor in In these duties Gary teaches courses and liaises with the business community. He is also Program Director of the PRIME Program. Prior to joining the Alberta School, Gary was Chief Economist at Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo). In that position, Gary provided economic analysis and commentary within AIMCo and to AIMCo Investment Partners and was involved in tactical asset allocation. Prior to joining AIMCo, Gary worked with Casgrain and Company Limited, an investment dealer specializing in fixed income sales and trading. In addition to industry work, he has taught extensively at the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Alberta, and Concordia University in both undergraduate and Masters-level programs. Gary completed his undergraduate and masters-level training at the University of Saskatchewan and received his Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Alberta. In addition, Gary is a member of the City of Edmonton s Investment Committee and the Investment Committee of the Edmonton Community Foundation.
3 Aditya Kaul Jarislowsky Fellow, Alberta Stock Exchange Fellow and Associate Professor of Finance Aditya holds a PhD from the University of Rochester. Aditya s primary teaching areas are introductory finance, market microstructure, international finance, and investments. His research interests include market microstructure, international finance, asset pricing and volatility in financial markets. Aditya has published in the Journal of Financial Economics. Felipe Aguerrevere Felipe is a faculty member at the University of Alberta School of Business, where he teaches in the Bachelor of Commerce, MBA and MFM programs. In 2005, he was voted Professor of the Year by the MBA students at the University of Alberta. Professor Aguerrevere joined the School in 2000 after earning his PhD in Finance from the University of California at Los Angeles and had completed his Master in Finance from the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Administracion (IESA) in Caracas, Venezuela. Felipe has also taught Risk Management at the University of British Columbia (Sauder School of Business) and at IESA in Venezuela. His research interests are in real options and in the valuation and uses of derivative securities. His current research focuses primarily on the effect of competitive interaction on the optimal exercise of real options, and on the valuation of corporate securities. Andras Marosi Assistant Professor of Finance Andras holds a PhD from the University of Texas, Austin and completed his Master in Philosophy at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Andras currently teaches in the University of Alberta School of Business Executive MBA and MFM programs with a specialization in Managerial Finance and Applied Corporate Finance.
4 Michael Maier Assistant Professor of Finance Michael Maier joined the faculty of the Alberta School of Business as an Assistant Professor in 2009 after completing his doctoral degree at the University of Iowa. He teaches introductory accounting in both the MBA and EMBA programs at the Alberta School of Business. His research has been published in the Journal of Accounting Research, CA Magazine along with conference proceedings. Current research focuses on the banking and natural resource industries. Michael is a member of the University of Alberta Research Ethics Board and sits on the Graduate Student Policy Committee in the School of Business. He has coached case competition teams at the CMA Board Governance and CA School of Business case competitions. David McLean David McLean joined the Alberta School of Business faculty as an Assistant Professor in 2006 after completing his doctoral degree at Boston College. He was appointed in 2011 and the Dianne and Irving Kipnes Chair in Finance and Development in David has held visiting positions at MIT, Sloan School of Management and the Development Bank of Japan. His research has been published in leading academic journals, including the Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Finance, and Review of Financial Studies, and popular practitioner-oriented journals, such as the Financial Analysts Journal and the Journal of Portfolio Management. David completed his Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in David s research is broadly focused on capital market imperfections and the resulting effects on asset prices, corporate finance, and real investment. Terry Daniel Professor, Strategic Management and Organization Terry Daniel is a professor in the School of Business at the University of Alberta. He has degrees in electrical engineering from McGill and M.I.T. and is a Ph.D. graduate of the Business School at Stanford University. He served as Associate Dean of Alberta s MBA program from 1990 to 1995 and currently teaches in MBA, MFM and Executive Education programs at Alberta as well as in the joint Executive MBA program offered by Alberta and the University of Calgary. Dr. Daniel has won all of the School of Business s major teaching awards and in 2002, he was the recipient of the Rutherford Award the highest teaching award at the University of Alberta. Recently he was named as one of Canada s hot profs by Canadian Business magazine. He teaches bargaining and negotiation, decision analysis, game theory and competitive strategies.
5 Mark Huson Mark Huson is the Pocklington Professor of Private Enterprise and a Jarislowsky Fellow at the University of Alberta. He was invited to China in 2002 to discuss economic reform in China, with an emphasis on the role of corporate governance. In 2000, he was invited to Malaysia to consult on the role governance could play following the downturn in Asian economies. In addition, at the request of the New York Stock Exchange, he testified before the U.S House of Representatives regarding changes in the trading methods at the NYSE. Mark has published papers in the Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Finance, Journal of Corporate Finance, The Accounting Review, and The Journal of Operations Management. His work has also been featured in the Wall Street Journal and Chief Executive magazine. Marvin Washington Associate Professor, Strategic Management and Organization Marvin Washington is an associate professor in the Alberta School of Business. His primary teaching responsibilities are with the capstone MBA course in Business Policy. Dr. Washington s theoretical focus is on processes of organizational and institutional change. His research has been published in the Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, Organizational Studies, and the Journal of Sport Management. In addition, Dr. Washington has written two books on leadership and organizational change: Pack Leadership: Lessons from the Wild Dogs of Africa (with Stephen Hacker at Quality Press), and Successful Organizational Transformation: The Five Critical Elements (with Stephen Hacker and Marla Hacker at Business Expert Press). Marvin serves on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Review, Organizational Science and Organization Studies. Marvin has a long-standing engagement with Anahuac University in Mexico where he is a part of their CEO academy. He has also consulted with numerous non-profit and for profit organizations. Dr. Washington is currently involved in a 12 year engagement with the country of Botswana.
