March is Brain Injury Awareness Month SDBI F C e l e b r a t e s 2 5 Ye a r s Recently, Richard Green, one of the founders of SDBIF, and Barbara Welsh-Osga, an early board member of the foundation, were reminiscing about all the ways rehabilitation for brain injury has changed in the last 25 years. We used to think that most of the progress in rehabilitation would occur in the first six months. We used to think that after a year of rehabilitation, no more progress was possible. Twenty-five years have brought about a lot of changes in rehabilitation for brain injury survivors. On March 9, the San Diego Brain Injury Foundation will be celebrating 25 years of service to brain injury survivors and their families. Although the logo and even the title of the foundation (used to be called The Head Injury Foundation) have changed over the years, the mission has remained the same: To improve the quality of life for brain injury survivors and their families in San Diego County. San Diego Brain Injury Foundation 25th Anniversary Celebration Join This us for event a Fun is Day at underwritten SeaWorld by a generous Sunday, grant from March 9, 2008 Anheuser-Busch 11:00 a.m.~7:30 p.m. Companies This event is underwritten by a generous grant from Anheuser-Busch Companies Logos from 1983 to present What started as a small group of family members, survivors, and three professional Richard Green L.C.S.W., Sharp Rehabilitation Center; Randy Evans, a psychologist and Dr. Ron Ruff, then a Neuropsychologist at U.C.S.D.; has grown into a membership of over 3600 survivors, family members and professionals. SDBIF, PO Box 84601, San Diego, CA sdbif@aol.com Fax: Phone: Brain Injury Survivor Golf Scholarship Al LaSota has been chosen to receive this year s Brain Injury Survivor Golf Scholarship. In 2005, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity brothers of brain injury survivor, Don Strom, started this fund. Each year, a survivor is chosen to receive a scholarship and golf in the SDBIF golf tournament. Before his injury Al golfed a lot with a handicap of 7. In 2000, he was racing a dune buggy in the desert and had a stroke. A helicopter flew him to the closest hospital in Yuma, Arizona, but he needed to be transferred to a trauma center. His wife June rented a small plane (big enough for the pilot, June, Al on a stretcher, and a nurse) and flew to UCSD where he stayed for one week. He then was transferred to Alvarado Hospital where he began rehab at the San Diego Rehab Institute. It was a year before Al tried to golf again. He admits that he still gets frustrated. Now his handicap is 31. He tries to go 1 2 times each week. It s coming around slowly, Al said. He is very much looking forward to golfing this year in the SDBIF Golf Classic. Al has volunteered for the past several years at the golf tournament. F o u n d a t i o n N e w s The SDBIF Board of Directors met Saturday, January 26, for an all-day Strategic Planning Retreat. Goals were set for 2008 with emphasis on education and outreach to the community. Dan Stoll, a retired engineer and brain injury survivor, has joined the board as a new member. Dan has served as a volunteer for several years at the annual golf tournament, the Friendraiser, and sets up for the Saturday meetings at Joyce Beers. Maureen Hanifin, RN, CRRN, BSN has also been elected as a new board member. Maureen has been working in the field of rehabilitation for 30 years and has held many leadership positions in other states. Currently, she is at Alvarado Hospital/San Diego Rehab Institute. Beth Anderson, Director of Howard House, announced that Howard House is now full with six residents.

The additional program provides instruction at Naval Medical Center San Diego, formerly Balboa Hospital. Continuing Education Disability Support Programs and Services is working closely with hospital personnel to develop a program that specifically meets the needs of service members from all branches of the military. As many are aware, traumatic brain injury is the signature wound of the current conflict in Iraq. Many of these service members can benefit from a program that addresses needs after rehabilitation in the transition back into work, school, re-deployment, life, family, etc. Curriculum includes subjects associated with cognitive, psychological, and communicative changes that may occur after brain injury. The classes offered in this educational setting are non-fee and non-credit. Instruction is provided by a licensed speechlanguage pathologist with support services provided by a certified rehabilitation counselor. An example of curriculum objectives may include the following: Organization & Time Management: Students improve use of day planner or PDA s to assist with memory, schedules and appointments. Students improve binder navigational skills, study skills, and learn 1st Quarter / Brain Injury Press strategies for organizational needs at home, work, school, etc. Memory: Students learn to define various internal and external memory strategies, and practice those strategies within classroom activities. Students identify personal memory difficulties, and learn how to implement new strategies into daily living. Personal Development: Students increase awareness of the possible after effects from brain injury, identify current social needs and limitations, work to improve interpersonal communication skills to more effectively convey current needs and possible limitations when accessing appropriate support systems in medical, social, or family structures/situations. Anger Management: Students increase awareness of the fact that anger has many levels, is a stressor on the human body and impedes the healing process of both cognitive and physical systems. Students work to develop awareness of practical techniques to manage anger as well as identify current triggers which may cause anger. Brain Anatomy & Function: Students learn anatomy and physiology of the brain and how various injuries impact brain function. Problem Solving: Students learn about the relationship between brain injury and difficulties with problem solving. Students learn how to identify their problems, how to find reasonable solutions, and how to implement those solutions with practical strategies. For more information, contact Disability Support Programs & or instructor Julie Every 23 seconds someone in the US sustains a traumatic brain injury. Every year brain injury affects more than 11,000 people in San Diego County alone. STROKE, BALANCE & NEUROLOGICAL DEFICITS Are You Reaching Your Therapy Goals? 4 S u r v i v o r S t o r y Story of Susie Flahive As told to Patsy L. Sholders Susie, who is just turning 50, was a caregiver in North Carolina 3 years ago. This profession came as second nature to her, as she had cared for a cousin with cerebral palsy, her mom after surgery, a famous actor, and her boyfriend at the time, who had multiple sclerosis. She is an enthusiastic animal lover, and was assaulted while walking her dogs one night close to her home. Through hypnosis she has been able to piece together some of the assault, and others have filled in the details. Several guys attacked her, presumably with robbery as the motive. As she had nothing with her, one very large man smashed his head into hers, knocking her to the ground. The others began kicking and beating her. She would have been left for dead, but her dogs drew attention to her in the aftermath. She ended up with a TBI, and every bone in her face was broken. Susie spent the next 2 ½ months in a rehab hospital. Her face had to be reconstructed from photos, and she found herself in the same rehab that Christopher Reeve had founded a few years prior. Her San Diego family members took turns flying out for visits, and moved her here when she was able. She is still facing a few other reconstructive surgeries, and has balance, vision (lost in one eye), depth perception, short-term memory, and some other residual problems from her TBI. Presently, Susie lives in 3 different houses during the week (sister, cousin, parents), and gets around primarily by the MTS system in San Diego. She has enrolled in the ABI (Acquired Brain Injury) program at Mesa College, and has made great strides in her recovery. Although she admits that she has been through an emotional roller coaster after surviving her trauma, she tenaciously holds on to a positive attitude. She states, Not many people get to have two lives in one! We can t go backwards. Just forward, and make the best we can of our adventure! She says that ABI has been a lifesaver in helping her with strategies for living, organizational skills, and recognizing that she can ask for help. The people there have become like a family to her, and she is grateful for all the help she receives. Susie s family has been key to her recovery, even though they knew nothing about brain injury. A psychologist helped them to understand that they have to be her frontal lobes. The frontal lobes are our executive decision makers, and help us with organization, integration, learning, memory, and higher thought. For example, Susie has trouble modulating her voice, so she doesn t talk too loud. Her family has developed a signal to let her know when she does this, so she can alter her behavior. She also has difficulty with past and present tenses, and gets mixed up. Her support group helps her to sort these things out and to move on (planning, schedules, forms, things that people take for granted without a BI). She says, We keep creating our own kind of therapy. So be open to others for help. It s important to invite others to help, as the positive reinforcement really helps. The things that keep Susie positive these days are volunteering at the Humane Society in Escondido, and staying as busy learning and being proactive for her own recovery as much as possible. She says that her care-giving experience helps her to recognize how her condition affects others that care about her; so she tries to be open, upbeat, and cooperative. A bus driver asked her why she lives in so many houses. She told him, To keep me out of trouble! She loves her work with her 4-legged friends, and says that 8 hours seems like only a few minutes. She doesn t mind cleaning up after the animals, as that is part of loving them. She gives them names, and is full of joy when they get adopted. Susie s long-term goals include being able to live independently, get a guide dog, take cooking classes, and continue to gain confidence in making decisions. She says her new motto is to Just go for it! So far, so good! She also says that while some people with BI need anger management, she needs giggle management. She is happy to have a new life, and wants to continue growing into it. We wish her all the best! 4

6 C o p i n g w i t h B r a i n I n j u r y This is the fourth in a series of articles summarizing highlights from Coping with Brain Injury Speakers Series. San Diego Brain Injury Foundation produced the series which features interviews with medical experts discussing topics of interest to families affected by brain injury. Life After Brain Injury What if you woke up one day, couldn t move, and were told there was a car accident and you sustained a brain injury? You have no memory of the event and, in fact, can t remember much of anything. You want to get up and start your day, but you can t seem to do things. You re confused, as if you re in a fog, scared, upset but don t know why, frustrated. This is what many of the 1.4 million Americans who suffer a traumatic brain injury go through. My brain injury was over 20 years ago, explains Patsy Sholders, a brain injury survivor and member of the board of directors of the San Diego Brain Injury Foundation. I don t remember much about it, I know I spent time in and out of coma and worked hard just to get my life back, but not understanding that I would be different for the rest of my life. Is the brain-injured person a new person? Some would say that following brain injury, there is a personality change. But I disagree with that, says Bruce Baxley, Ph.D., clinical psychologist. I view brain injury as a disruption of function sorting, organizing, remembering, carrying out tasks. Because these things are so difficult, survivors act and feel differently and as a result may feel like they are a different person. But I disagree with that. We are essentially the same person. Sholders explains it this way: Losing your ability to function affects how you feel about yourself. You get impatient with yourself because you re fumbling around, confused or unable to do things easily; and multi-tasking goes out the window. You start to feel like your identity has changed. Sense of Loss People I ve worked with who have a brain injury are very uncertain about things, about what comes next, they ask, Who am I now? and try to make sense of things. Unless those issues are examined with the help of another, they can become very disabling. Brain injury does change your perspectives, Sholders says. People who see a disabled person walking with a cane know that you ve got to be a little extra patient. But when you re standing at an ATM machine, and you can t figure out how to get money, people wonder what s wrong with you. So you try to cover up your disability. Sholders adds, You think you re still there so you scramble to recover but you quickly learn it takes a long time to do the things you could do before. Short-term memory loss is significant, you become impatient, frustrated, and you realize roles in your family may be reversed you are no longer the caregiver, but the one who needs help from others. Rehabilitation Rehabilitation initially focuses on helping survivors regain ability to do daily activities, like getting out of bed, learning how to walk, tasks like dressing, bathing, feeding. We re quite good at figuring out solutions to those daily concerns, but often the problem of figuring who am I now, how does that compare to who I was before, and what s going to happen to me now---those things are not as consistently addressed in rehabilitation, says Dr. Baxley. What about family members? Family members are as bewildered as anyone else and will do anything possible to make the situation better, according to Dr. Baxley. But that s not possible so the family faces a dilemma about how they can help. My opinion is that if we help the recovering patient know that we still know who they are and that they are still important to us, that we love them, then that s a very powerful message, and that s not something the rehabilitation team can do with credibility. Sholders and Dr. Baxley also emphasized the importance of not being serious all the time. If families can have fun and do some ordinary goofing off, that can be refreshing as well as enhancing creativity, which helps in recovery. It s humbling to have anything wrong with you, but if you can find some humor in the situation, than everyone is more comfortable, says Sholders. 6
