July, Volume 1, Issue 1 NEWSLETTER Letter from the Executive Director Inside this issue: Letter from the Executive Director 1 Spotlight on Staff 2 Student Success Story 5 Reasons to Choose a Long Term Rehab. What s Happening at the Centre Program Steps- Learning Improvement Course This month - Student Success Story 3 4 & Reasons to Choose a Long Term Rehab What s Happening at the Centre What do you know about our program? Narconon program explained -step by step every month Letter from the Executive Director - Dear Get Off Drugs Naturally friends and family, For our clients to truly succeed, it is imperative that we improve their level of responsibility. It is very common for students to blame their condition on others. Drug addicts, in many cases, having been trying to hide their use and shirk their responsibilities for so long, they have resorted to subterfuge to conceal their destructives lives. How do we raise responsibility here at Get Off Drugs Naturally? There is a section of our program dedicated to the topic of responsibility. The Personal Values and Integrity Course and The Changing Conditions in Life Course, (Books 6 & 7), increase and improve a student s ethics, morals and give them the tools to take responsibility and repair their past transgressions. However, we do begin to raise their responsibility as soon as they commence the program. All students are assigned a chore, which they complete daily, as well as keeping their assigned rooms clean, neat, and tidy. A strict scheduled is adhered to from 8:30am until 8:00pm. These may seem like simple tasks, however, in many of our students day to day lives, (and what you and I may do on a day to day basis), for them was completely non-existent. Students also get paired with another student; we call them twins. They actively work together on the first phase on the program. Giving them someone to work with makes them not only responsible for themselves, but also another. Chores and twinning, assists the student to realize that they are not a mere individual. They are also part of a group. The Narconon program teaches us responsibility is not fault. It is recognition of cause. In other words, it is not taking the blame for things; rather it is a realization that we are the reason things happen. Our action or inaction caused something, and we are responsible for it. For our program to truly be effective; honesty is required. Truth is built by those who have the breadth and balance to see also where they re wrong L. Ron Hubbard Andrew Cunningham Executive Director. Andrew Cunningham is a Registered Addiction Specialist and Certified Chemical Dependency Councillor. Andrew has worked at Narconon Vista Bay in California and brings many years experience to the Get Off Drugs Naturally team. Our Mission or Valuable Final Product - Drug free people who are valuable, contributing members of society resulting in a drug free and crime free area.
P a ge 2 Spotlight on Staff Australian K9 Detection Unit : Chris and Macca! K9 s are living, breathing intelligent individuals who are trained to quickly and efficiently detect any narcotics. The Australian K9 Detection Unit or AKDU, came on board with Get Off Drugs Naturally last year. Chris and Macca are an integral part of our team. K9 s are living, breathing, intelligent individuals who are trained to quickly and efficiently detect any narcotics. With the ability to sniff out as many as 17,000 different scent residues including amphetamines, methamphetamines, cocaine, heroin, marijuana and GHB, the K9 on duty can locate any illicit substance and will sit at the area indicated. The handler will then conduct a thorough search until the substance is located. Macca does a sweep of the entire facility nightly and accompanies Chris on night patrol. Chris and Macca also man the front gate every Sunday, sweeping the vehicles and ensuring the students and facility remain drug free. Chris & Macca the German Shepherd Drug Detection K9 on duty at Get Off Drugs Naturally. Do you know Get Off Drugs Naturally offers a intervention service? Often, an addict refuses to admit they have a problem with drugs and/or alcohol. It is a daily struggle for families to watch their loved one spiral out of control. Sometimes, the answer is intervention. A qualified and experienced Get Off Drugs Naturally staff member will come to the family home and talk one on one with the addict and help them realize they have a problem. If you know anyone who may benefit from this service, please give us a call. Help Line :
P a ge 3 Student Success Story- Kathy M. Just over 6 months ago I was focused on getting high, my life revolved around doing so. I was living where ever I could stay, or afford to stay and really life was bad! I then came to Narconon and throughout the course I have had to confront a lot of things. I have learnt how to study and Book 5 gave me a lot of knowledge on why and how my life had turned so bad! Book 6 made me realize how I had let some of my basic ethics slip, and Book 7 has given me the knowledge to be able to fix my condition. I have Book 8 to go, but I will be leaving soon with lots of tools and a lot better future. My kids and I will be back as a family by custody on the 20/6/14, and my husband wants to give things a go again. So all smiles from me; the most important thing is, that I found myself again. Kathy M. The most important thing is, I have found myself again.
P a ge 4 5 Reasons to Enter a Long Term Rehabilitation Program When someone finally decides to get help for their drug or alcohol addiction, the next decision is where to receive treatment and what kind of treatment they should get. Considering the length of time to spend in a drug rehabilitation treatment program is one of the major factors that contribute to someone s decision about where to go. Many people who are using drugs have a life to maintain, so time is an important element to consider. The decision becomes much clearer however, when considering what long term rehabilitation can do to effectively change the situation they are in, versus a short term program. Here are some of the most important reasons why choosing long term rehab is beneficial for long term sobriety. 1. Change the habits and routines that a person has had for many years which are learned behaviours from Drug and Alcohol Abuse. This can take months, not only weeks or days to overcome so that they can form new habits and more proactive ways of living. 2. Get physically strong. It can be a difficult task to heal one s body from the physical destruction that Drugs or Alcohol cause. It take a few weeks for the person to achieve normal eating or sleeping patterns and start to feel clear minded as a consequence. It is very hard to achieve this along with all the counselling and life skills required for long term stability, in a short term stay. 3. Give the persons family a chance to regroup, heal and put order back into their own lives. It also gives them an opportunity to watch their loved ones heal and start developing a loving and trustworthy relationship again.
P a ge 5 5 Reasons to Enter a Long Term Rehabilitation Program...continued 4. Receive total rehabilitation that addresses all areas of the former drug users life. It is very important to have an opportunity to discover for themselves, the true causes of their addiction and to resolve the problems that have occurred as a result of drug and alcohol abuse. Following onto that, it s valuable to learn life management skills to maintain a controlled and positive life with sound decision making skills at hand. Similar to giving up smoking or deciding to get fit and eat healthy, a drug or alcohol habit which can be much more damaging, needs time and good therapy to over come to achieve lasting results. 5. Handle the problem straight away. Many people that enter our program have been to a dozen different short-term drug rehab programs and their problems have not been resolved fully. Relapses can occur, creating further loss financially and also more damage to relationships as more trust can be lost with each relapse. This can go on for months or even years. It can be more viable to bite the bullet and enter into a long term drug and alcohol rehabilitation program and handle the problem relatively quickly in comparison to a sometimes roller coaster of short term stays. Overcoming a drug or alcohol problem is a life changing task. A person usually needs a long term treatment program to really address all the layers of addiction, and the problems that a drug or alcohol addiction has created. Please call Get Off Drugs Naturally and speak to one of our Intake Counsellors to discuss the option of a long term Drug and Alcohol Treatment Program. Call our help line :
P a ge 6 What s Happening at the Centre? First Aid Training - Some of our staff attended a First Aid course on Saturday to refresh their skills and keep up to date. The course ran for 5 hours and was enjoyed by everyone who participated. All Get Off Drugs Naturally staff are trained in First Aid to a minimum Level 2. Thank you to Helen from Total First Aid Training! Upgrades to the Facility Get Off Drugs Naturally is a registered not for profit charity that relies on donations from it s friends and families to be able to purchase - equipment, new furniture, games and sporting goods, and carry out much needed renovations to the centre. If you would like to make a donation please visit our web page and click on the make a donation link. All donations are 100% tax deductable. Drugs and their effects on the Mind and Body - Our founder and President of the Board, Dr Nerida James ND, came up to the centre this month and gave a talk to the staff and students on Drugs and how they effect the mind and body. The talk was very informative and it was helpful for students to gain some understanding on how and why drugs have had such an impact on their lives and health. Dr Nerida James ND volunteers her time at Get Off Drugs Naturally and her input and valuable assistance is much appreciated by everyone. Thank you Nerida!
P a ge 7 The Narconon Program Explained - Book 3: Learning Improvement Course Book 3 of the Narconon Program is called the Learning Improvement Course. As students at Get Off Drugs Naturally move through their rehabilitation program, it is vitally important that they have the ability to study. There is a technology of study. When this technology is applied, a person finds that he can study and in fact, can learn any subject. The person can also apply what they have learned. Learning to study effectively is essential if the student is going to successfully complete the rest of the program, which is largely educational. Have you ever read something, got to the end of the page and thought ; I don t remember anything I read! Chances are you have gone past a word you did not understand the meaning of. By doing the Learning Improvement Course, the student gains the ability to study, retain and use knowledge. They learn the various obstacles to studying and how to handle each one so that they can then be successful in all their future studies. This course is delivered in a course room environment and administered by our Course Supervisors. All students are encouraged and assisted to achieve their end result. Students after completing this course, have found a new sense of self respect and confidence. They gain literacy skills that some, have never had before. These skills are taken with them when they leave the program and assist them in the future for gaining employment, training and sometimes just being able to read with confidence. Student then move onto the next part of the Narconon program Book 4A - Communication and Perception Course, but more about that next month! Students after completing this course have found a new sense of self respect and confidence. That s it for another month. I hope you enjoyed our newsletter! Is there any issue or topic you would like us to address in our future editions? Drop us a line at info@getoffdrugs.com.au. From the team at Get Off Drugs Naturally see you next month
