What Is a Brain Injury? Brain Injury refers to anything A that causes brain cell death and loss of function. 1 As a result, this can change the way a person thinks, acts, feels and moves the body. 2 A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is defined as a blow or jolt to the head, or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the function of the brain. 3 An Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is an injury to the brain that has occurred after birth. ABIs are not hereditary, congenital, degenerative or induced by birth trauma. 2 Potential Causes of Brain Injury ABI Stroke Near Suffocation Brain Infections Excessive Bleeding Tumor TBI Falls Sports Concussions Assaults Automobile Crashes Military Blast Injuries An estimated 58,500 Michigan residents sustain a TBI every year. Of these: 1,520 die 10,980 are hospitalized No two brain injuries are exactly the same. The effects are complex and vary greatly from person to person depending on factors such as cause, location and severity. 2 46,000 are treated and released from emergency to recover on their own 3 1 Resources for Persons with Brain Injury and Their Families. 3 The Brain Injury Association of Michigan (BIAMI) is a nonprofit organization that serves to create greater awareness of brain injury across the state. We are the primary conduit to resources for Michigan brain injury survivors, their families and the professionals who serve them. Our Mission To improve the lives of those affected by brain injury and to reduce the incidence and impact of brain injury through education, advocacy, support, treatment services and research. Our Vision Everyone affected by brain injury will have immediate and equal access to services and support to help lead full and meaningful lives. o brain injury is N too mild to ignore, nor too severe to lose hope. Who We Are

ANYONE. ANYTIME. ANYWHERE. If you or someone you know is coping with the effects of a brain injury, remember... You are not alone. The Brain Injury Association of Michigan is here to help. Who We Serve f Veterans who need recreational, medical, emotional and reintegration support. f Persons with brain injury who need advocates. f Families needing financial support and resources. f Individuals looking for support groups and social outings. f Human service agencies learning about and serving those with brain injuries. f Professionals working in the brain injury field. f Anyone looking for brain injury information. FACT There are currently 98,000 Michigan residents living with a disability as a result of a TBI. (Source: MI Public Health Institute) About 30% of TBIs in Michigan are caused by car crashes. Because of Michigan s Auto No-Fault system, these individuals have immediate and continuing access to treatment and rehabilitation services for as long as reasonably/medically necessary. (Source: MI Dept. of Community Health) For those with non auto-related brain injuries in Michigan, obtaining access to proper care is far more difficult. For these individuals, an advocate for appropriate services and funding assistance is crucial.

Who Is Most Likely to Sustain a TBI? f Children 0 to 4 years old (falls, abusive head trauma, illness, etc.) f Adolescents 15 to 19 years old (sports concussions, auto accidents, etc.) f Adults 65 and older (falls, assaults, etc.) f Combat veterans (blast injuries, penetrating wounds, etc.) x Michigan employs more than 10,000 professionals in the brain injury rehabilitation field. x The BIAMI annually hosts the nation s largest conference on brain injury. FAST FACTS x Michigan has more Certified Brain Injury Specialists than any state in the country. x The BIAMI Veterans Program is the only full-time veterans program in the country. Who We Serve

EDUCATION The BIAMI offers specific programs that focus on educating communities and professionals about brain injury. Some programs and services include: v Annual State Conference the nation s largest two-day brain injury conference v Annual Specialty Conferences (Veterans, Legal, Pediatrics, etc.) v Voluntary National ACBIS Certification Program for all brain injury service professionals v Webinars and community presentations v Comprehensive online resource library ADVOCACY The BIAMI actively monitors and maintains a vigilant presence with federal, state and local governments promoting brain injuryrelated policies, legislation and court decisions. Advocacy and collaboration efforts center around: v Capitol Day v Veterans care issues v Protecting Michigan Auto No-Fault v v v Prevention measures (e.g., helmet legislation, sports concussions, texting while driving, etc.) Quality-of-life measures (e.g., Michigan Brain Injury Act, Brain Injury Medicaid Waiver, etc.) State-of-the-art care guidelines for trauma care, post-acute treatment, and the inclusion of TBI rehabilitation in worker compensation plans SUPPORT After a brain injury, issues may arise in returning to school or work; changing family relationships; and with behavioral, emotional and financial concerns. Our Information and Referral (I&R) specialists provide assistance, information and referrals. Call our Helpline at (800) For veterans who have sustained a TBI or who are suffering from PTSD, assimilation back into civilian life can and does present many challenges.

Our Veterans Program provides assistance, information and resources specifically for veterans and their spouses. Call our Veterans Hotline at (800) We also host more than 20 statewide brain injury chapters and support groups that: v Conduct monthly meetings v Encourage members to connect with others in similar situations v Provide valuable emotional support and friendships v Feature speakers to discuss brain injury-related topics TREATMENT SERVICES Michigan has become nationally recognized as a center of excellence in the field of brain injury due to the extensive number of CARF*-accredited rehabilitation centers, medical treatment facilities, care providers, programs and professionals specializing in brain injury across the state. The BIAMI is both comprised of and serves as the critical link between those living with a brain injury and the extensive statewide network of care. RESEARCH The BIAMI believes that research is critically important to the long-term needs of people with brain injuries. We encourage and have assisted in research through state and regional research projects, including: v The State of Michigan TBI Implementation Partnership Grant v Southeastern Michigan Traumatic Brain Injury System v Ohio Valley Center for Brain Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation System v Protection and Advocacy Services v Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems v The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research How We Serve * The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities
