Amy s three new chicks The chicks at 6 weeks old Success at the Holiday Parade Abbie Members Win Big at State Competition by Jan Bennett December3wasthedateoftheStateRecordBookCompetitionatUCDavis. One hundred and three members from 4H clubs all over the state submitted their books for review. At the state competition, books are read by trained judgesandrankedinto 4categories: participation,meritrecognition,medalist and state winner. Of the 103 books submitted this year, 19 of them ranked StateWinner.Abbie sownjennabennettandjoeybennettwereamongthose winners.alamedacountyhadagoodshowingof7bookssubmitted,4ofwhich werecountywinners notbadatall!membersmustbe14yearsofageasof December 31 of the 4H year for which they are submitting their book. 3 Page 3 of 8 The Catering Project Starts Up! by Joey Bennett Catering Project had its first meeting on Wednesday, November 20. They started the meeting talking abouttheyearahead.theprojectmemberswillbeabigpartofthecountywidefavoritefoodsdayevent, andtheywillbesellingsnacksatthecountywideskitnight.thegroupalsodecidedtovariouscookiesfor theupcomingchildren schristmasparty. Oncetheplanningtimewasthroughitwastimetogettowork.Thememberslearnedaboutmeasuringin thekitchen,wetversusdrymeasureandhowtoconvertmeasurements.forcateringevents,youhaveto make large quantities, so it s important to be able to convert a recipe. Then the group practiced by increasingabbqrubrecipemakingittentimesaslargeastheoriginal.thenthemembersmadetheirown rubandbottledittotakehome.thekitchensmelledwonderfullyspicybythetimethenightwasoverand everyonehadsomethingoftheirownmakingtosharewithfamily. Lastyear,wehadguestschefsteachushowtoprepareIndianandGermandishes.We also used English and French recipes. Create Memories with Scrapbooking Project by Chandler Gaub MynameisChandlerGaub,andIhavetakenscrapbookingfor4years.Ireallylike scrapbooking because we make lots of cool things and it teaches us about arts and crafts.wealwayshavecoolthingstodoatthemeetings.lastyear,wemadebooksto recordwhatwedidatmeetings.wealsomadebooksthatweputourownpicturesin andwroteaboutwhattheywereaboutbelowthepicture.scrapbookingisveryeasy and very fun. The meetings are an hour long and if you want, you can stay after to finishyourproject. Stuff-a-Bus! by Kamryn Brown 4-H volunteers at Stuff a Bus ThispastSaturday,mybrotherParkerandIchairedtheStuffaBusevent.Afew Abbie 4Hers spent their day outside of Lucky s supermarket asking shoppers to donatenon perishablefooditemstotheopenheartkitchen.ourgoalwastofilla Tri ValleyRapidbuswiththefooditemsshoppersdonated.Westartedcollecting thefoodat10:00a.m.andwatchedasthebusbegantofillwithfooduntilaround 3:00 P.M. Before we could collect the food however, the 4Hers who helped out had to go up to the customers entering the store and explain to them what we were doing and how they could help. The customers were excited that Pleasanton s youth were so willing to help the community, and were glad to see howfullthebuslooked.stuffabuswasareallygreatopportunitytogivebackto the less fortunate families during the holiday season. I know therewere a lot of opportunitiestoservethecommunitylastweekendandi mhappythattheabbie 4Herswereabletobepartofspreadingsomeholidayjoy!

5 Page 5 of 8 Capture the Moment: Photography Project by Walker Gaub Myname iswalkergaubandiamtheteenleaderforphotography.ihavebeenin photography for 4 years. The first meeting is in mid January. In the beginning of the meetingwelookatthepicturesthatpeopletookathometosharewiththegroup.we thengooverwhatwelearnforthatday,theleadershowsyousomeexamplesthenwe get up and go to the park to take pictures or we just go in the backyard and take pictures. Photography is fun because it is easy and you learn different techniques to takepictures.youcanalsoprintthepicturesyoutookduringthemeetingandsubmit themtothealamedacountyfair.ihaveenteredabunchofpicturesovertheyearsi ve beenin4 h,andhavegottenalmostall1stplaceribbons,andyoumakeafewdollarsas well. This group overall is fun and the things you learn will help you when you take pictureslateroninlife. There will also be a poster contest; topic Food and Nutrition and a Table Setting Contest.Registrationstartsat10:00;theeventwillbe10:00am 2:00pm. 3/3 3/4 or 3/10 3/11 will be North Central Section Youth Lock in. This is a recreational focused conference for 4 Hers all over the region to bond and learn how to make their meetingsmorefun.citizenshipopportunitieswillalsobeoffered.itwilltakeplacefrom12pm onasaturdayandgoto12pmonsunday.prioritytothosewhoarein8thgradeandabove.if there is still room left 7th graders will be able to join. The final date and location will be announced soon.
