1 Wa Sung Community Service Club Newsletter January, 2006 Providing Community & Educational Services since 1953 President s Message Audrey Huie 2005 Board of Directors President Audrey Huie Vice President Clayton Yukumoto Treasurer Roland Hui Secretary Nancy J. Lee Social Director Arnold Mew Newsletter Editor Cynthia Lim Advisor to the Board Past President Richard Fong Directors Mary Chan Ron Hing Lucy Meyer Theresa Gee Helena Mew Directors Chris Dear Pat Johnson Bill Sakakura David Won Cheryl Yukumoto I would like to thank the membership of Wa Sung and my family for the opportunity to further serve Wa Sung. I am very humble and appreciative that I will lead you as President for My first experience with Wa Sung was at the 1996 Christmas Party. We were invited by Ron and Barbara Hing. It was held at the Asian Cultural Center in Oakland Chinatown. We were very impressed with the family activities and the hospitality displayed by the membership. The family-orientated activities gave us a sense of belonging. My son Edgar received a big toy from Santa. His great big smile and gleaming eyes indicated his joy of the Wa Sung gift. These types of functions and events prompted me to join Wa Sung in August of I can still remember the words of the President, Cheryl Louie. In the directory she said, We are striving for Unity: uniting members and families, uniting community service organizations, and uniting Asian families. Eight years have past and I still experience the unity of all the members, the contributions for the community, and most of all the fun of all the activities and events. All the members make Wa Sung such a wonderful Community Service Club. I am proud to be a part of the leadership. My roots are in Hong Kong. I was born and went to school in Hong Kong, before making our home in California. I truly missed my family and friends from Hong Kong. Wa Sung helped me during that transition period. I have met many good friends and learned many new things while serving as an Officer and Director of The Wa Sung Community Service Club. I have held various positions, which include: Board of Director, Treasurer, Secretary, and Vice President and soon in 2006, President. Thank you for the confidence and support that you have given me in the past. I can only look forward to the great things we can accomplish together for the community. I know I will lead you in the direction that will bring much happiness and reward for Wa Sung. I have the responsibility to follow the leadership of the Past Presidents and to set new standards. I am counting on all of you to help volunteer and achieve many more goals. My Theme in 2006 is to encourage more family-orientated activities, continue to expand the membership and to better serve the greater Bay Area Asian Community. With your help and participation, we will have continued success. Thank you and I look forward to seeing you all at the Inaugural.

4 Santa s Visit Wayne Fong Hi All, Merry Christmas!!!! I'd like to thank all of my helper Elves this year: Adrienne Fong, Clifton Fong, Brian Fong, Marion Fong, Richard Fong, Ron Hing, Nancy Lee, Cyndee Lim, Arnold Mew, Helen Wong, Caroline Yee and Cheryl Yukumoto, Together we saw over 660 children at 3 preschools and 2 elementary schools. Special thanks to Cyndee and Caroline at Lincoln School and Suzanna Yip and Mrs. St. John at Cleveland School. They were the contacts and coordinators at their schools. I would also like to thank Paul at Bay Cities Produce for his kind donation and Denise at Walgreens for his generous discount. We gave out Huggible Honey stuffed animals, Speed Wheel cars, candy canes, oranges and Wa Sung pencils. The look on all those children's faces...priceless. I d like to thank everyone again...santa could not do it without you.
5 Social Corner Cyndee Lim & Nancy J Lee Christmas Party 2005 On December 3, 2005, Wa Sung Community Service Club held their annual Christmas Party at Lincoln Elementary School in Oakland Chinatown. It was well attended by new and older members and friends! Young and older who arrived early in the late afternoon enjoyed decorating a tree with miniature lights and lots of decorations to make anyone s Christmas tree the BEST! We want to thank Carolyn Yee, Principal of Lincoln Elementary School for donating the use of Lincoln School s Auditorium and the help of the Kitchen and Janitorial Staff. John & Ruth Wong, origami experts and well known in the Oakland Chinatown community and elsewhere, shared their art of folding the Asian Astrology and more Thanks to John & Ruth for sharing their expertise with us! Jack Greenspan, head of Laney College Culinary School brought a wonderful group of culinary students who prepared a wonderful meal. Their presentation is in par with the 5-star hotels! The menu included a choice of several salads with scrumptious dressings, including fresh fruits, Prime Rib, Steamed Halibut with a delectable orange/lemon flavoring, a medley of vegetables, rice, and the most unbelievable selections of desserts and a Yulelog cake! The wonderful part of this Christmas is the cost for the dinner helped the Laney Culinary students raise some money toward their trip to Hawaii in February to meet and work with the Chefs of the World! Maybe we can use them again for another event? Or if you have an event you would like them to cater, we have the phone number! Being so early in the holiday season of Christmas and busy schedules, many members couldn t make it. We missed them all but we were 75 strong! Can we make it 100 in 2006? It was a fun family event and rumors are next year, it will even be more fun! Thanks all who came and made this such a wonderful event, and may everyone have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year. January 29, 2006 will begin the year of the Fire Dog! Cyndee Lim & Nancy J Lee
6 Wa Sung Community Service Directory 2006 In 2006, Wa Sung will be celebrating the 50 th year anniversary of the Easter Pancake Breakfast! The 2006 Directory Committee will be highlighting the Easter Pancake Breakfast over the last 50 years and we need your help! Wa Sung s Easter Pancake Breakfast has helped to raise funds that provided the first Merit Award Scholarships over forty years ago. Over the years, the cost has been nominal (still $3.00) a person, and still attracts many young and older families in the Oakland Chinatown communities. It is a tradition! Please go through your photo books and submit any pictures you have from past Easter Breakfasts or contact those you know who may have old pictures and forward them to the Committee. Please put your name on the back and the names of those featured. After scanning the pictures, your photographs will be returned to you. As Asians have grown in numbers, we want to include all businesses in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Please contact your favorite restaurants/businesses in your neighborhood to see if they would buy an ad in 2006! The Wa Sung Community Directory has been FREE and shared with all businesses and organizations that are interested in the Asian communities. To put this Directory together, we need the help of all members and friends. If you are interested in helping, please contact the 2006 Directory Committee Chairs Arnold Mew, Bill Sakakura, Nancy J Lee & Roland Hui. We are planning a day(s) in January to canvas the Oakland Chinatown past advertisers and solicit renewals and new ads. If you are available, please contact the Committee and let us know your availability. The Advertisement Form will be available at Wa Sung s website or by contacting Nancy J Lee (510) or any committee member. Thank you for your support and help! We look forward to having a wonderful and successful 2006 Directory! Arnold Mew, Bill Sakakura, Roland Hui, Nancy J Lee 2006 Directory Committee PO Box 1561 Oakland, CA 94604
