9 9 Entry requirements Dependent on the level and type of course, there may be specific entry requirements for those wishing to enrol onto the programme. However, as an adult with life experience, you may not always require formal qualifications. For many of our programmes we take your past work experience into account and may ask you to attend an informal interview so we can assess the right level of course for you. s and payment For the majority of courses in this guide all fees are payable at the time of enrolment. The tuition fee and qualification fee (where relevant) is combined into an overall fee, as advertised in this guide. Tuition and Qualification The tuition fee covers the cost of delivering the course. The qualification fee is collected by the College and passed on to the awarding body for your qualification. It covers examination, assessment and certification costs. Professional Body Membership s leading to a professional qualification require students to register with the professional body. Any costs of this nature are payable directly to the professional body by the student and will be discussed at the start of the course. Payment by Instalments for Students With the exception of learners receiving a loan from the Student Loans Company, learners may agree payment by instalments of four equal monthly payments, providing the last instalment is payable at least two months before the end of the course. Instalment payments will not normally be granted for fees below 0 or for courses lasting six or less. Instalment payments will be subject to an administration fee of 20. s Paid by an Employer or Other Organisations A learner may have made an agreement for course and other fees to be paid by their employer. This is an agreement made between those two parties. Where it has been confirmed as part of the enrolment process that the fees for the learner are to be paid by a sponsor or an employer, then formal and written confirmation of this must be submitted to the College. The College must receive any such letter of authority or payment by a third party at the point of enrolment, otherwise the learner will be asked to pay the full fees due. Have you lived outside of the European Economic Area at any time during the last three years? If so, the UK Government may classify you as an overseas student and special fees apply. Once enrolled at the College you will receive a confirmation letter giving you the date and time of the course. 8. You will also be invited to a Higher Education workshop at the end of July. This will give you help in researching universities and offer advice on volunteering and placements before your Access course starts. Each pathway offers excellent preparation for Higher Education, giving you the necessary qualification to apply for a range of courses. It is the responsibility of the student to check with individual universities to ensure they accept Access to Higher Education Diplomas for entry on to their courses. * If you do not hold a maths or English GCSE qualification, the College may be able to support you with this. Please see page 44 for more information southdowns.ac.uk

23 23 My name is Hilary and I teach History on the Access to Higher Education course here at South Downs College, as well as being Chief Examiner for Edexcel History A level. I love the passion, enthusiasm and commitment that returning students - whatever their age - bring to the course. As a lecturer, I like the fact that we have control over what we teach, so that exciting programmes can be created. On the Access course students can choose an independent research project that is related to the area they intend to progress to. By this point students have really developed their confidence and this demonstrates how far their academic journey has already taken them. Lesley (previous page) undertook a study of Rowlands Castle in Roman and medieval times. She did a remarkable amount of reading - including some in Latin producing work that was already at undergraduate level, which was an outstanding achievement. I think the key to the Access course is giving students confidence - the belief that, however they performed while at school, they can still succeed. 25 25 I was attracted to taking an Apprenticeship as I knew that I could further my education whist gaining experience in the business world and also get paid for it! As I did not wish to go to university due to not knowing which subject I wanted to take, this was a great way for me to experience working life as well as gain important qualifications. I have received continuous support throughout my qualification, with visits from my Assessor Amy on a regular basis, as well as knowing that she is easily contactable. I have also received support from other members of the Apprenticeship team who are always friendly and happy to help. I was also very grateful for the continued support with my dyslexia that Amy provided. Emily Bell, Business Administration Apprentice at Coffin Mew Solicitors An Apprenticeship offers you the ability to work and learn on the job as well as a starting point in your chosen career. It also offers nationally recognised qualifications delivered flexibly to meet both learner and employer needs. For young people like Emily, an Apprenticeship opens up opportunities within employment, as well as progression to higher level qualifications. I am proud of what Emily has achieved, as she is now employed in a full-time position as a Marketing Assistant with Coffin Mew, as well as being awarded Apprentice of the Year at the Portsmouth News Business Excellence Awards. 26 26 Art, Design and Media overview I would certainly recommend a Pre- Degree course to anyone that wants to go on to University, as it definitely helped me get into my chosen Uni, and I don t think I would have done if I didn t study this course. During my time of studying, I have received lots of support from my lecturers and there was always help when I needed it. I received positive criticism and was given guidance regularly throughout the course. My lecturers made sure I kept on the right track and helped me with any problems I had. Coral Bull Pre-Degree Foundation Diploma Student Whether you want to develop your photography skills, learn a new craft for enjoyment, or start on your journey to become a professional graphic designer, the College can provide a creative course to suit you. Our highly experienced professional art, design and media tutors are well equipped to give you the best training possible, while providing this in an enjoyable and stimulating learning environment. It is a privilege to teach and support the students such as Coral who come onto the Pre-Degree Foundation Diploma in Art and Design. They are an enthusiastic, committed and talented group who want to have the added experience of the Pre-Degree course to develop their skills further and have time to select their progression route. The course is designed and managed to focus on the more mature students way of learning. As this is a higher level course, our adult learners feel totally integrated with those who have joined directly from college. Sarah Sykes, Pre-Degree Foundation Diploma Manager * The Pre-Degree Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is fully funded by the UK Government for those aged 18 and under at the time of enrolment. Adults aged 19+ will be required to pay a fee southdowns.ac.uk
