1 Elm Hill Family Service Center Family Services Interns Meet with clients one-on-one to provide intensive case management through the following services: food pantry, holiday assistance, fuel assistance, access to SNAP, referrals to other ABCD programs/services, and referral to external services/programs. Assemble client files and complete data entry for services rendered through online client tracking program. Support staff/site with administrative duties as assigned, including by not limited to answering phones, filing, front desk coverage, data entry, etc. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Strong communications skills required. Must have strong computer knowledge and demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel and Publisher. Must be prepared and ready to document and complete assigned tasks. Ability to work independently and as part of the team required. Ongoing and 15+ hours per week. Flexible schedule between Monday and Friday from 9am to 5pm. Senior Programs Intern Perform eligibility screening through client intake process. Assemble client files and complete data entry for services rendered through online client tracking program. Assist in facilitating the Senior Brown Bag Program, a food distribution program. Support Senior Recreation Group by finding workshops, activities, and resources benefitting the group. Perform outreach to the senior population in the Roxbury/North Dorchester neighborhoods. Support the development of seniorspecific programming and serve as a liaison for seniors in the community. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Strong computer skills and demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, and Publisher required. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail a must. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Ongoing for 16 hours a week: Tuesday and Thursday from 9am to 5pm. Food Pantry Assistant Assist in preparing bags of food for distribution to families/individuals. Maintain neatness of the pantry by ensuring all items are in their proper place. Complete weekly inventory. Assist with the unloading and stocking of weekly food deliveries. Report findings to staff and management on a consistent basis. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Must have basic computer skills and strong verbal communication skills. Ability to document and complete assigned tasks required. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail a must. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Ongoing for 15+ hours per week. Flexible schedule between Monday and Friday from 10am to 4pm. Planning and Grants Department Community Planning Interns Provide Planning Department staff support by assisting in a broad variety of data collection, analysis, reporting, and program development. Identify and analyze primary and secondary data sources related to ABCD s anti-poverty mission to produce publications, including research papers, white papers and policy reports. Review and analyze public policy, social, economic, and political trends as related to agency development. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Students in a Master s level Urban or Public Policy, Sociology, Government, Public Administration, or Political Science program preferred. Must have exceptional verbal and written skills. Strong research and analytical skills required. Familiarity with SPSS, R, GIS, or Google Fusion Table a plus. Ongoing (September to December). 2 North End/West End Neighborhood Service Center Communication Intern Develop and maintain the center s quarterly newsletter. Create, edit, and source newsletter content. Responsible for the formatting, design, and distribution of the newsletter. Perform other related duties as need. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Undergraduate or graduate students with a background in Communications, Journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with Microsoft Publisher preferred. Prior experience in outreach and/or marketing a plus. Must have written and verbal communications skills with close attention to detail. Ongoing internship with flexible days/hours for hours per week. Hot Meal Program Volunteer Provide assistance with the Hot Meals Program, which provides a hot, fresh, home-cooked lunch to seniors in the North End needing a meal and companionship. Assist with shopping, food preparation, cooking, serving, and clean up. Interact with program participants and respond to meal and recipe requests. Perform other related duties as need. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Cooking experience required. Experience cooking Italian food and traditional holiday meals such as Thanksgiving Dinner preferred. Experience cooking for crowds highly desired. Must be able to multi-task and respond to multiple requests simultaneously. Must have customer service skills. Must be flexible and willing to assume the various roles required of the Hot Meals Program. Ongoing from November 2014 to October 2015, for 2 to 3 hours between 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on Monday or Friday. Exercise Instructor Volunteer Teach exercise classes to seniors in their 80s and 90s. Set up weekly fitness and exercise program consisting of light work outs, yoga, light weight-lifting, etc. Set up weekly walking group during good weather. Assist with exercise program outreach and recruitment. Perform other related duties as need. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Knowledge of health and science required. Must have experience leading exercise classes, preferably for seniors. Must have customer service skills. Must be flexible and able to respond to multiple requests simultaneously. Ongoing from November 2014 to October 2015, for 2 to 3 hours between 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Food Pantry Volunteer Assist in the operations of two food pantries: the North End Food Pantry located at 1 Michelangelo Street and the West End Food Pantry located in the West End Branch of the Public Library at 151 Cambridge Street. Organize and categorize food, conduct inventory, and deliver food to clients living nearby as needed. Refer clients to staff for further assistance. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds. Must be able to multi-task and respond to multiple requests simultaneously. Must have customer service skills. Must be able to lift bags of food and boxes. Must be able to travel on foot to deliver food to clients in the area. Ongoing from November 2014 to October In the North End, 2 to 3 hours between 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on Monday or Friday. In the West End, 2 to 3 hours between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm on Monday and Wednesday, and 9:30 am to 11:30 am on Saturday. Computer Instructor Volunteer Teach basic computer skills to seniors in their 80s and 90s such as performing basic internet searches, creating simple documents in Microsoft Word, setting up an account, and navigating online shopping services such as Stop and Shop s Peapod Grocery Delivery. Assist with computer class program outreach and recruitment. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Must have knowledge of computers and basic computer skills. Experience teaching computer classes, preferably for seniors, highly desired. Excellent customer service skills required. Must be flexible and able to respond to multiple requests simultaneously. 3 East Boston Area Planning Action Council Administrative Assistants Assist the staff with various administrative duties and data projects. Help maintain a series of computerized databases and verify that all files are up to date. Ensure all services given are properly recorded in client records and identify those records that may be missing information. Perform data quality and comparison projects, prepare client files and data entry. Answer phones and greet clients. Perform other duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Knowledge of computers a must, preferably in Microsoft Office. Bilingual in Spanish or Portuguese and English highly preferred. Must have strong communication and organizational skills. Ongoing and 25 hours per week. Jamaica Plain Area Planning Action Council Case Managers Provide direct client service, conduct intake, and assist with various administrative duties for the immigration program. Develop case management and administrative skills and become exposed to the role of administrative work as background or foundation to staff delivery of services to clients. Connect with clients to identify immigration needs. Assist clients in the completion of N400, fee waiver, and passport applications. Follow up with clients to confirm all immigration-related appointments are completed. Assist with citizenship classes. Attend all immigration trainings. Enter data in management system and update case notes on all files. Perform other duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Knowledge of computers a must, preferably in Microsoft Office. Must have strong communication and organizational skills, as well as attention to detail. Must be able to learn new tasks quickly. Ongoing for 15 to 20 hours per week. Community Coordination Social Work Intern Provide intensive case management, advocacy, and follow-up for the low-income clients that the department serves. Facilitate workshops for Mass Health applications, food stamps, utility advocacy, and fuel assistance. Assist in preparing client tax returns to be submitted to the IRS. Conduct follow-ups with clients who were referred to outside programs. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds Minimum of a Bachelor s degree in Social Work or other human services related field, Students in Master s level with related major are highly preferred. Strong organizational skills and the ability to work at a quick pace and multi-task required. Must be interested in getting a detailed overview of anti-poverty work and social services. 4 Housing and Homelessness Department Legal & Housing Court Interns Get hands-on legal experience to provide tenants with advocacy throughout the eviction process. Handle 2 to 3 cases per week in Housing Court from start to finish. Collect client information, conduct client assessments and client intakes, and maintain detailed and organized case files. Responsible for conducting legal research, creating case plans, and negotiating with landlord s attorney. Understand legal issues as they pertain to housing. Conduct workshops and write weekly memorandum to supervisor. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Must be a current law student or paralegal. Experience with client interviews or public speaking required. Must be able to understand CORI issues, immigration issues, and landlord tenant law. Must have an interest in litigation and the ability to negotiate. Ongoing from November 2014 to May 2015, Monday through Friday for 20 to 25 hours a week with a flexible schedule. Must be available Thursdays in the morning and afternoon for Housing Court. Stabilization Interns/Volunteers Provide case management to previous housing court advocacy program clients. Responsible for conducting client interviews and creating a comprehensive stabilization plan with client to ensure long-term housing is maintained. Assist clients with housing search, career resources, and money management/ budgeting skills. Provide supervisor with updates on case status. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Social work or similar background highly desired. Must have experience in interviewing and advising clients. Must be able to work independently. Experience with case management for low-income households in crisis preferred. Housing-specific knowledge not required. Ongoing from November 2014 to May 2015, Monday through Friday for 20 to 25 hours a week with a flexible schedule. Housing Interns Manage the front-desk of the housing department; answer phones, direct clients, visitors, and staff appropriately. Manage administrative task within the department (filing, data entry, ordering supplies). Responsible for routing contracts and other documents as necessary. Learn all departmental functions and provide coverage and/or assistance when necessary. Maintain data integrity and confidentiality. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Demonstrated experience working in fast paced environment required. Must have exceptional organizational skills. Attention to accuracy required. Must be proficient in Excel, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Excellent communication skills. High School Diploma or equivalent required; degree preferred. Ongoing and flexible hours. Government and Industrial Relations Events Intern Assist in organizing Spring/Summer/Fall 2015 Fundraising events. Organize and supervise volunteer corps for events. Research potential event sponsors and draft communiqués and s to potential sponsors and individual donors. Track fundraising efforts. Assist in the logical execution of events, including but not limited to guest lists, seating, scheduling, etc. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills required. Must have familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and fundraising concepts. Enthusiasm for events, a strong eye and memory for detail, and a good sense of humor required. Must have a passion for doing good and be knowledgeable about marketing, public relations, and digital promotion sources such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram. An interest in basketball and baseball preferred. 5 Youth Services Department WorkSmart Tutor Provide academic assistance to BPS students participating in the WorkSmart program, a job placement program that helps youth stay in school. Provide small group or one-on-one assistance with homework to youth in the program. Develop positive relationships with students and practice instructional skills. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Must be a creative, flexible, and dedicated individuals that will act as a mentor to students. College experience required. Previous experience in tutoring high school students preferred. Ongoing, once/twice a week Monday through Thursday from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Career Explorations Tutor Provide support to help out-of-school youth ages 16 to 21 prepare for the High School Equivalency Exam. Provide small group or one-on-one assistance with reading and math to youth in the program. Develop positive relationships with students and practice instructional skills. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. High School diploma/ged required. No prior office experience necessary. Ongoing for 20 hours per week. South End Neighborhood Service Center Office Interns Meet and greet clients. Answer telephone and direct to appropriate staff. Assist clients with applications for Food Pantry, Fuel Assistance, Cradle to Crayons, Housing Assistance, Holiday Assistance etc. Maintain client records by filling and performing data entry. Pack food pantry bags and restock shelves (1pm-4pm). Assist clients in proper completion of job applications and resumes for employment opportunities. Outreach to new clients via telephone, mail, and flyer distribution. Assist with turkey and toy distribution. Outreach to clients for the upcoming tax seasons (schedule tax appointments).participate in training hosted by ABCD and the Boston EITC Coalition the includes training on using the tax preparation software (estimated 8 hours).become certified in tax preparation by completing the on-line link and complete taxes exam (1-2 hours). Scores are reported to ABCD Tax Site Coordinator and Boston EITC Coalition. Provide high quality tax assistance to all clients. Directly prepare clients tax returns. Attend tax training on a Saturday. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively communicate with individuals of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. Bilingual in Spanish, Cantonese, and Mandarin highly preferred. Must be able to lift 50 lbs and climb stairs. Basic computer skills for inputting data entry required. Must be able to learn and apply tax knowledge. Strong organization skills required. Must be able to perform tasks completely and accurately. 6 Charitable Giving Campaigns Special Projects Volunteer Process and finalize applications for state and federal charitable campaign including 990 s, audits, and IRS determination letters. Review and verify information contained in 9 documents for over 200 application packets. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Must be able to lift boxes of papers up to 25 to 50 lbs during campaign season delivery. Must have the ability to use a calculator, read and analyze, and keep notes. Ongoing and hours per week. Campaign Volunteer Assist in establishing contacts and coordinating with federal employees for the charitable campaign, both in person and over the phone. Deliver and pick up campaign materials and compile agency data. Perform other duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Knowledge of Microsoft Excel required. Fluency in English is a must. Must be able to lift boxes of papers up to 25 to 50 lbs during campaign season delivery. Elder Services Department Elder Services Interns Assist the Director and staff in foundation prospecting, grant writing, program evaluation, best practices research, outreach, and marketing assistance. Provide administrative support as needed. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Ongoing and 7 hours per week. Food Dollars Trainers Responsible for teaching the Food Dollars curriculum to older adults looking to make changes in nutrition and lifestyle, as well as stretching their food budget. Must attend a 2 day training, 6 hours total. Responsible for leading a 2 hour class once a week for 6 weeks and purchase a healthy snack for each class which will be reimbursed. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Experience with public speaking and making presentations required. Must enjoy being with older adults and have demonstrated an interest in health and nutrition. Must commit to lead 2 or more 6-week Food Dollar classes over the course of a year. Ability to travel to various neighborhoods throughout Boston required. Minimum of a high school diploma / GED, with a 12 th grade reading level and fluency in English required. Ongoing and 2 hours per week for 2 continuous 6-week periods throughout the year. Dorchester Neighborhood Service Center Intake Assistant Interns Provide general assistance in the outreach, intake, verification and processing of applications for fuel and weatherization clients. Assist in providing outreach to eligible clients through mail and telephone correspondence, including responding to client inquiries regarding program and services offered. Assist in logging in all winter heating emergency calls, and directing calls to the appropriate staff for assistance. Assist in client intake, data entry, certification notice and other appropriate administrative duties as appropriate. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Prior experience in general office work required. 7 Mattapan Family Service Center Program Assistant Provide assistance to students in the ESOL program, offering one-on-one and group tutoring. Responsible for teaching conversation classes, assisting students with computer literacy and helping facilitate information sessions. Must undergo training to become a TABE (Tests of Adult Basic Education) assessor. Assist with data entry and filing and perform other duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. Must have demonstrated interest in teaching adult students languages and language learning. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and strong internet skills required. Bilingual in Spanish or Haitian Creole a plus. Ongoing through the Fall/Spring semesters, Monday-Friday, 8-10 hours per week with a flexible schedule. Mattapan Head Start Family Engagement Coordinators Assist with the planning and coordination of parent partners for recruiting and outreach. Facilitate advisory group. Assist with planning workshop trainings. Perform other related duties as needed. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds. AA, BA preferred. Must have good time management skills.
