1 C Department of Health & Human Services Volunteer & Student Internship Opportunities Working with Children: Clerical Support Volunteer Assignments include purging old files in Child Protective Services Offices, pull closed client files and put them in boxes by alphabetical order; look up files in the database and close out files; putting packets together. Location: 3331 Power Inn Road, Sacramento. Flexible schedule Monday to Friday during 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Child Supervision Granite Youth Room Supervising and engaging children in activities, games, or movies; monitoring the entrance and the in-and-out log; providing emotional support to children; assisting with snacks and drinks. Location: 3331 Power Inn Road, Sacramento. Morning shift only, Monday Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Child Supervision Children Receiving Home Volunteer/student receives supervision and guidance by working with Child Development Specialists in engaging and supervising children of all ages in activities, movies, crafts, or games; prepare snacks, observe behaviors, and provide emotional support to children who were newly separated from parents/guardians. Location: 3555 Auburn Boulevard, Sacramento. Flexible schedule during 8 a.m. to midnight, 7 days a week. Front Office Receptionist Great opportunity for individuals who are seeking entry level experience. Assignments include but are not limited to greeting visitors, contacting staff in building regarding visitors by phone or , receiving and sorting in-coming mails, assisting with security clearance to the building. Location: 3701 Branch Center Road, Sacramento, CA every Wednesday, Thursday or Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with one hour lunch break and two fifteen minutes breaks during the day. A minimum of four months commitment is required. Independent Living Program (ILP)- Youth Transportation Assistant ILP needs volunteer drivers to transport youth to and from special events, workshops, job orientations, and trainings. Must be 21 of age or older with valid California driver license and good driving record. Locations: 925 Del Paso Boulevard, Sacramento Schedule and hours vary depending on event but most likely in late afternoon during work days. Advance notice of scheduled event will be given.

2 Paralegal Office Assistant Great internship opportunity for students in paralegal study. Position offers experiences in legal office management, legal document production, records management, phone communications, tracking and researching records, and other business office duties. For people who are not in paralegal training may help with the routine clerical duties at this office. Location: 3331 Power Inn Road, Sacramento. Flexible schedule during Monday- Friday between 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Working with Seniors: Administrative/Clerical Assistant Clerical volunteers perform a number of duties in support of programs and services, including filing, sorting, photocopying, distributing mail, inputting data into computer systems, maintain program packets and brochures, assist social workers with filing and volumizing files, and assist at special events. Computer skills and other relevant experiences might be required in the Administrative Assistant position. Location: 3701 Branch Center Road, Sacramento. Schedule depends on position applied. Hours are Monday- Friday between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Senior Companion/Home Visitor Volunteers spend an average of 2-4 hours a day with a client at the client s home and can have up to 4-5 clients each week providing socialization/recreation activities, reviewing mail, help with coordinating appointments and some transporting of clients. Must be 18 of age or older with valid California driver license and a good driving record. Locations and hours are flexible and vary. Quality Assurance/Fraud Unit Assistant Individuals who have background in Criminal Justice may assist social worker in the QA unit to investigate alleged fraud cases by conducting home visits, collecting and analyzing data. Location: Business Park Drive, Rancho Cordova and flexible schedule during Monday- Friday between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Medical Office Volunteer /Intern Opportunities: Clinic Office Assistant Great opportunity for individuals looking for clinic experience in busy county clinic setting. Assignments can be a combination of pulling and organizing charts, scanning and filing medical documents into the computer hard drive, receiving and processing referrals for counseling, mailing letters to clients, and scheduling appointments. Some positions might require advanced level of computer skills to perform complicated tasks such as running queries and preparing reports for management. Locations and hours are flexible and vary.

3 Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Office Assistant Need volunteer or student intern assists with office duties including weighing and measuring infants and children, contacting mothers by phone, clean breast pumps, prepare WIC folders and enrollment packets, and possibly update clinic bulletin boards. This position would call for someone who is mature, friendly, flexible, and creative and detail oriented. Able to work in a fast-paced environment. Nutrition knowledge is always a plus and must be comfortable talking to clients about breastfeeding information. Great for students in medical assistant training, nutrition or dietetic study and must be emotional mature, self-initiative, flexible and has a good work ethic. Bilingual in Spanish candidates are encouraged to apply. Various locations throughout Sacramento County. Flexible schedule during Monday- Friday between 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Public Health Volunteer /Intern Opportunities: Public Health Education Volunteers Opportunities to get involved in public health related issues such as Tabaco Youth Purchase Survey and Nutrition Assistant Survey by participating in special projects to survey different health issues in Sacramento community. Locations and schedules vary depends on project. Public Health Medical Health Emergency Preparedness Exercise Volunteers Don t have time to volunteer on a regular basis? You may still involve by participate in this annual health exercise to test the readiness of the health system in Sacramento County. Locations and hours are to be determined each year. Public Health Point of Dispensing (POD) Manager Volunteers Individuals who are interested in public health may be trained as a POD Manager volunteer by taking a two hours on-line training to be certified. A POD Manager is inactive until there is a real medical health crisis. The POD Manager will then be deployed to a designated POD center to set up and manager volunteers to provide emergency medical services to members in the community. Other Volunteer Opportunities: Administrative Assistant Clerical volunteers perform a number of duties in support of the offices in Alcohol and Drug Program, Medical Indigent Services Program (CMISP), filing, photocopying, scanning, and inputting data into computer system. Some positions may require basic computer and data entry skills. Various locations and flexible schedule during Monday- Friday between 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

4 Communication Media Assistant Great opportunity for students with a major in English or Communication. Strong communication and writing skills are essential. The main assignments include editing articles submitted and interviewing department staff in various divisions and writing articles to be published in the monthly department on-line newsletter the Pulse. Other duties include special events, taking photos, making video, organizing events, scheduling, and other various tasks. Experiences in editing and writing article for newsletter are desirable. Location: 7001-A East Parkway, Suite 1000, Sacramento, CA Schedule and hours are flexible between 8 am 5pm, Monday to Friday. Gifts From The Heart Program This huge holiday gift-drive program provides thousands of gifts to foster children, seniors and disabled adults served by the Sacramento County Department of Health and Human Services system of care. This program is run by volunteers and relies completely upon donations from the community. Location: Power Inn Road near Highway 50. Hours: First three weeks in December; anytime between 8 am 5pm, Monday-Friday. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: Warehouse Volunteer: Load, unload, check in, sort and organize gift packages. Packages are not usually heavy, but this position does require some physical exertion. Volunteer should have the ability to stand for couple period of time, reach, bent and lift up to 15 lbs. Drivers Volunteer: Experienced drivers are needed to pick up gifts from community donor organizations around the County, deliver the gifts to the warehouse for sorting, and transport the gifts to various DHHS sites. Drivers must be comfortable in driving either a 16 footer truck or cargo van. Drivers are also needed to deliver gifts to seniors directly using County sedan cars. Program Coordinator: If you are an organized person who enjoys coordinating projects, GFTH could use your help! We are always looking for individuals with strong computer skills (Word, Access Database, and Excel) to help us coordinate, screen, and process thousands of gift referrals. Location: 7001A East Parkway, Sacramento. Hours: Vary and flexible between 8am 5pm Monday-Friday, starting October through end of November.

5 Student Internship Opportunities at DHHS: TEChild Development/Early Childhood Education Internship Child Protective Services Court Comfort Room offers internship opportunities for students in these majors to fulfill their internship and explore possible career path from this internship by offering experiences to interact with children clients. Counseling Internship Students in the master program of Psychology or Counseling may find internship in our Mental Health and Alcohol and Drug Programs. The internship provides master level experience in group, individual and assessment opportunity. Health Care Administration Internship TStudents may find placements in various programs in our department performing wide range of assignments from basic clinic office support to special community projects. Human Services Internship TStudents in Human Services, Community Health Science, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology or Public Health fields may find internships in Senior and Adult Services, Alcohol and Drug Program, Child Protective Services, WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Program, and Public Health to educate and promote public awareness in health and safety practices. Experiences may differ by program. Social Work Internship HHS partners with CSU Sacramento to provide internships for Bachelors and Masters' level students who are currently enrolled in the CSUS Social Work Program. Students must be referred by the Director of Field Placement. For additional information, contact the CSUS Field Office at DHHS Volunteer/Student Intern Services mission is to enhance and extend services delivery, not to supplant paid staff. Volunteers and interns must have authorization to work in the U.S. Criminal background check and/or licensing clearance is required. Some volunteer and internship positions that involve driving will also require a valid California driver license and DMV clearance.
