The Institute also supports programming in Rhode Island. The Institute s mission is to help refugees and immigrants become active participants in the social, political, and economic richness of American life. The IINE Internship Program offers outstanding opportunities for college students, graduate students, and recent graduates. Interns are recruited year round on a semester basis in the Boston, Lowell and Manchester, NH offices. All IINE internships are unpaid. 2 Boston Internships Community Services Internship The International Institute of Boston is currently offering internships through its Community Services Department to students with demonstrated interest or experience in serving refugee, asylee and immigrant populations. Tasks include cultural and community orientation, assistance with case management (securing housing, applying for temporary financial assistance, advocating for health and social services) and community outreach. Conduct case management intakes with new clients to access services. Perform resettlement and case management activities as needed, including accompanying clients to the DTA, health clinics, social security office, etc. Provide support to case managers and meet with clients to assist with referrals/enrollments into benefits and trouble-shooting of issues with accessing benefits. Serve as a referral source for a wide variety of social service needs. Assist with filing and ensuring all required documents are in client files. Conduct Affidavit of Relationship meetings with clients, in particular Central American Minor cases, to facilitate the family reunification process. Assist with instruction and implementation of the Cultural Orientation Program. Provide crisis assessment and crisis intervention. Interest in international, refugee and asylee issues. Excellent communication and advocacy skills. Ability to handle multiple tasks and to switch gears quickly. High levels of professionalism, discretion and maturity in dealing with confidential information. Comfort in navigating the Boston area on public transit. Driver s License and/or car a plus. Bi lingual and bi cultural experience a plus. Fluency in Arabic, French, Spanish, or Somali highly desirable. Workforce Development Internship The International Institute of Boston is currently offering internships through its Workforce Development Department to students with demonstrated interest in serving refugee, asylee and immigrant populations. One of the primary goals of our clients is to gain employment. In order to do this, clients need guidance in a variety of ways. The International Institute has a staff of professional Employment and Training Specialists, along with ESOL teachers to assist in and support the job search efforts.
3 Work one-on-one with students to provide support with job applications, resumes, and interview practice. Conduct weekly information sessions to recruit potential clients into our training and ESOL programs. Teaching Assistant in our English for Employment Program, Department of Elementary and Secondary Education funded Program, Hospitality Training Program and Service Industry Training Program. Conduct full intake, assessment, and document verification of potential clients. Work with potential employers and clients of the Workforce Development Department to match available positions with clients. Research industry trends and job openings. Participate in WFD activities such as company tours, mock interview days, career fairs, educational workshops, staff meetings, etc. Staff the workforce development resource clinic and complete any required follow-up work at the conclusion of appointments. Assist with ESOL program activities including one on one tutoring, conducting field trips, and career and education advising. Maintain accurate case notes on each client and input data into database. Must possess knowledge of professional etiquette and behavior. Ability to handle multiple tasks and to switch gears quickly. High levels of professionalism, discretion, and maturity in dealing with confidential information. Enjoy working with people from diverse cultures (one-on-one and group setting). Bi lingual and bi cultural experience a plus. [Pursuing] BA/MA Human Services, International Relations, Hospitality, Education related field. Microenterprise Internship and grow their businesses. Administrative (20%) Assist with program enrollment by outreaching to potential clients, scheduling appointments for one-onone meetings and classroom training programs. Assist clients with filling out applications for program enrollment and/or microloans. Provide general office support such as faxing, ing, and printing relevant materials. Opportunity to propose independent projects to build internal capacity. Business Coaching (40%) Meet with clients to provide an initial assessment for qualification into the program. Conduct Business planning, strategy, market planning, communications, and social media marketing strategy meetings with clients.
4 Provide Financial Analysis and prepare financial documents for clients. Research (20%) Conduct market research for clients. Research requirements for certifications, state and local laws, and other requirements for starting new businesses in a variety of industries. Research marketing techniques through social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. Financial Education (20%) Research, develop, and implement financial literacy curriculum for low-income individuals, refugees, and asylees. Execute lesson plans and lead a classroom of up to 15 students. Communicate and collaborate regularly and effectively with students and staff regarding student development, feedback, and real-time adjustments to the curriculum. Serve as principal in-classroom resource for students regarding financial and business questions. Accompany students on off-site field trips. Strong research and analytical skills. Ability to think creatively. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. [Pursuing] BA/MA Marketing, Accounting, Finance, Business, and International Development. Web Development Internship and grow their businesses. For the Web Development Intern, the goal is to create a website and social media accounts for clients that will legitimize their businesses and promote them to the public. A minimum commitment of hours per week is required. Conduct one-on-one meetings with clients to plan website development for the entrepreneur s business. Assist Microenterprise team in developing a Web Development curriculum for clients to use after the creation of their website. Attend weekly supervision meetings with the Manager of Microenterprise to discuss client interactions and outcomes of individual web and graphic design projects. Maintain accurate case notes on each client and input data into the database. Additional tasks may be assigned to the intern at the discretion of the Manager of Microenterprise.
5 Access to a computer and the required software for web design and development as needed (left to the discretion of the intern). Previous experience with web development (WordPress or similar platform preferred), including familiarity with social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, etc.). Excellent interpersonal skills, especially with clients from diverse social, economic, and cultural backgrounds. Creative, organized, reliable, and detail-oriented. Strong verbal, written, and visual communications skills. Graphic Design Internship and grow their businesses. For the Graphic Design Intern, the goal is to create effective designs for low-income and refugee entrepreneurs that will legitimize their businesses and promote them to the public. A minimum commitment of hours per week is required. Conduct one-on-one meetings with clients to outline a graphic design specific to the entrepreneur s business. Assist client with their design needs, this may include developing logos, branded prints, posters, digital advertisements, and more. Attend weekly supervision meetings with the Manager of Microenterprise to discuss client interactions and outcomes of individual graphic design projects. Maintain accurate case notes on each client and input data into the database. Design outreach materials for Bridges to Business program and assist in implementing online outreach strategy. Access to a computer and the required software for web design and development as needed (left to the discretion of the intern). Additional tasks may be assigned to the intern at the discretion of the Manager of Microenterprise. Highly creative, organized, reliable, and detail oriented. Possess strong verbal, written, and visual communication skills. Previous experience working with graphic design is required. Candidates should be familiar with the Adobe Creative Suites including Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator, along with Microsoft Office Suite. Understand how to take a client s vision or idea for their business and make it visually appealing while preserving the details that make it unique. Interested in and passionate about learning various aspects of the nonprofit sector.
