1 Neighborhood House Technology Volunteer Positions: Digital Connector Assistant/Intern Technology Center Assistant Technology Center General Instructor Title: Digital Connector Assistant/Intern Location: Neighborhood House Technology Center at Rainier Vista Number of volunteers requested: 1-2 per quarter or semester Purpose/Objective: The purpose of the Digital Connector Assistant will be to facilitate the youth program Digital Connectors. Digital Connectors is a school year long youth program that focuses on technology training, media literacy, and instilling a sense of community service in youth. The Digital Connectors program is a unique opportunity for youth to serve community through technology and leadership. This is a national youth program, sponsored by One Economy Corporation, a leading non-profit that works to bring technology to low-income communities across the United States and around the globe. Community computer lab located in public housing authority neighborhood. Neighborhood House Programs: Since 1906, Neighborhood House has been helping diverse communities of people with limited resources attain their goals for self-sufficiency, financial independence and community building. Annually, Neighborhood House serves over 13,000 individuals, of those, 80% are refugee and immigrants. The Rainier Vista and High Point Technology Centers are community computer labs located in public housing authority neighborhoods that create access to computers, the skills needed to use them, and classes that cover topics such as employment, housing search, ESL, and financial literacy. Key responsibilities: The program has an extensive curriculum that explores leadership skills, analyzing the media, financial literacy, and Information Technology basics. Youth gain skills that will help them in school, the workplace, as well as help them become leaders in their communities. Help create a welcoming and supportive technology center for Digital Connector participants Assist Digital Connector sessions, with one-on-one assistance to students Ensure that all lab users sign in before using lab equipment. Assist in planning and implementing youth program sessions. Qualifications: Volunteers interested in this position should have some experience working with youth, or a strong interest in beginning to work with youth. Prior experience working with limited English-speaking individuals and youth. Background check required

2 Volunteers should be able to commit to either a quarter or semester of the program. Excellent interpersonal skills, including responsiveness, providing one-on-one assistance and competence communicating with ethnically and culturally diverse students as well as limited English-speaking individuals. Ability to work as a team member in a multicultural organization and community. Independent and reliable transportation. Time commitment: Starting October 11 th, Digital Connectors will occur every Wednesday and Thursday 5:00-7:30PM through June 2012 Training/Support Provided: The Digital Connectors Intern will work with the Digital Connectors Instructor to gain familiarity with the program curriculum and the youth. 3 Title: Technology Center Assistant Locations: Neighborhood House High Point Center Technology Center and Rainier Vista Technology Center. Purpose/Objective: Technology Center Assistants will help lab staff with daily operating procedures and lab instruction including open lab time, group and one-on-one assistance. The volunteers will help with computer and educational programming in the lab. Classes include basic computer, Job Search, and other targeted classes. Assistant will support set-up, breakdown, and inventory procedures for equipment. Neighborhood House Programs: Since 1906, Neighborhood House has been helping diverse communities of people with limited resources attain their goals for self-sufficiency, financial independence and community building. Annually, Neighborhood House serves over 13,000 individuals, of those, 80% are refugee and immigrants. The Rainier Vista and High Point Technology Centers are community computer labs located in public housing authority neighborhoods that create access to computers, the skills needed to use them, and classes that cover topics such as employment, housing search, ESL, and financial literacy. Key responsibilities: Training and Resident Support Help create a welcoming and supportive Technology Center for participants of all ages and cultures. Assist with open lab time so the lab is accessible to the community. Teach and guide participants in the lab on computer basics and Microsoft Office Assist during lab programs or classes, with one-on-one assistance to students. Help increase technology, job, and language skills for lab users. Assist low income residents to become aware of community resources, such as social services, health, legal and more. Administration, Collaboration and Technology Support Assist with giving out lab questionnaires and surveys on a weekly basis. Assist with monthly outreach distribution. Assist with maintaining lab files and other documentation. Ensure that all lab users (open lab time, classes and programs) sign in before using lab equipment and that a Neighborhood House Enrollment Form has been completed by the user. Assist with set up, break down procedures and inventory of Mobile Lab equipment.

4 Assist in enforcing operating procedures and rules for the Technology Center, with youth, adults, programs and the larger community. Qualifications: Background check required. Experience with MS Office software programs and Windows 7 desktop and capacity to train others on using both. Excellent interpersonal skills, including responsiveness, providing one-on-one assistance and competence communicating with ethnically and culturally diverse students as well as limited English-speaking individuals. Highly positive and enthusiastic style capable of motivating others. Ability to work as a team member. Willingness to comply with established agency performance standards, which require productivity/personal responsibility, client/customer service-orientation and the maintenance of a professional demeanor. Flexible work hours. Independent and reliable transportation. Purpose/Objective: The General Instructor will support the Center staff with daily operating procedures and lab instruction including open lab time, group and one-on-one assistance. Tech Center General Instructors will be expected to take initiative and have some experience in computer and educational programming. Classes will include basic computer use, Microsoft programs and other targeted classes. The volunteer will also be trained on all set-up, break down, and inventory procedures for equipment.
