2 Take home messages Als je innoveren niet aan het toeval wenst over te laten, dien je te begrijpen waar, op wat en hoe de innovatie ingrijpt. Vanuit innovatie management bezien, wordt geïntegreerde zorg veelal op atomistieke wijze gemanaged. Het resultaat hiervan is incrementele verandering en dito resultaten. Dit kan anders. Weet waar je innovatiekracht ligt en benut of versterk deze.

Innovation provides the opportunity for a company to put its mark on the evolution of business. 2. Innovation is critical to growth in a competitive environment. Align the amount and type of innovation to the company s basic business mentality. 4. Manage the natural tension between creativity and value capture. 5. Neutralize organizational antibodies. 6. Recognize that the basic unit (or fundamental building block) of innovation is a network that includes people and knowledge both inside and outside the organization. 7. 5 Innovation Innovation has to be a theory in action; top managers must be committed and follow their commitment with actions. Knowing how to change business models and technology together and individually is the mark of a successful innovator. 11 Innovation According to Christensen there are three types of disruptive innovations from the point of view of creating growth: Market creating innovations innovations which transform products that are complicated and expensive into things that are so much more affordable and accessible that many people are able to buy and use the product (Airbnb) Sustaining innovations innovations that make good things better (Uber); Efficiency innovations innovations that do more with less (ATM). Innovations that do not enter the low end of a market in a disruptive way, but rather enter at the high of the market to fill new needs (Tesla, iphone) (8 Dec 2016) Innovations that come in from sideways very rapidly (Google Maps)

21 Strategie There is no menu of generic strategies from which to choose. You have to craft your own strategy, adapt to changing conditions, and choose the right time to make key moves. Not all innovations are created equal as highlighted by the innovation matrix. Innovations are about changing business models and technology together and individually. Essential to sustained innovation is the creation of a portfolio of incremental, semi-radical and radical innovations. Roughly there are two classes of innovation strategies: Play-to-Win strategy investing in diverse portfolio with the intent to outpace competitors (progressive, combining radical and incremental) Play-not-to-Lose ensuring that the company can stay in the game by taking calculated risks (conservative, more incremental) Davila et al

23 Strategie A lack of radical innovation can lead to failure. However, investing in radical innovation at the wrong time or in the wrong amounts can be just as fatal. Too many innovative ideas out there clouds one judgement on which ideas are really great. An innovation strategy needs adjustment over time. Factors to consider: Internal: technical capabilities, organizational capabilities, success of current business model, funding, top management vision External: capabilities in external network, industry structure, competition, rate of technological change.
