2 Partner s background: ARPA Veneto ARPAV is a public body founded in The goal of the Agency is to control and preserve the environment in order to help the identification and mitigation of risks to humans and to the environment. Its principal activities are: controlling pollution sources (e.g. industrial emissions, waste, radiation); monitoring of the state of the environment, particularly air quality, water, and soil; preventing risk factors and promoting an education aimed at favouring life styles, which respect the environment. Role in APICE: Leader Partner and the scientific body in charge of investigatin Leader Partner and the scientific body in charge of investigating g the impact of emission sources situated in the Venetian area by means of air r quality measurements and source apportionment modelling studies

3 Partner s background: Veneto Region Veneto Region Spatial planning and Parks department has the aim to protect and manage the regional territory to assure a balanced development and to improve regional competitiveness while mitigating the climate change effects. The Regional Coordination Spatial Plan (PTRC) is the roadmap for the development of local, provincial and urban plans in accordance with the regional socio-economic programming Department s tasks are: design strategies to address regional spatial planning in coordination with the Provinces; european project management and promotion of best practices in the field of spatial planning, urban and environmental quality; coordination, management and valorisation of regional parks and protected areas of Veneto Role in APICE: : own the results of land-base and shipping pollutin sources in the lagoon to address development strategies in the Venice port area, in the urban u settlements nearby the port and in the wider area (Venice s s backyard towards Padua city)

4 The project area: Eastern Veneto, Venice lagoon and the Port Eastern Veneto Region, characterized by polycentric development, one urban corridor (Venice-Mestre- Padova) and large infrastructures (port, airports and highways) Venice lagoon, extended 550 kmq; litoral extension: 60 km characterized by high urban density along the coasts and fragile environmental and cultural heritage Venice port, with 13 commercial terminal, 10 industrial and 1 passengers. Heavy impact on the economic activities of the whole area (cargos, touristic cruises, shipyards etc..)

9 Problems and challenges of the project area -Lagoon environment and Venice cultural heritage constraints require detailed knowledge to draw the best scenario for sustainable development. This involves: -Cohexistence within the city of Venice of the home port, and transit inside the historical city main channels The port and the city of Venice: First home port of the Mediterranean Sea 1,4 million passengers -Design of a functional and efficient localization of port activities within the Venice lagoon context, in the frame of environmental compatibility assessment and reduction of air pollution -Two concrete actions: -Extension of the Blue flag agreement (short term) -Cold ironing (long term)

11 Expected concrete impacts of APICE in the project area Guidance to drive port-district expansion in the frame of Regional Masterplan (PTRC), strategic plan Venice Padua and coastal urban plans; Promotion of agreements to mitigate emissions of docked-vessels in front of Venice Coordination with the sectorial plans (eg. Air-quality and water-quality regional plans); Modelling, monitoring and assessment should work together to build effective and efficient policies of mitigation, adaptation and reduction of emissions (WP5)
