4 ECONOMIC OUTLOOK OF LAGOS STATE Largest urban agglomeration in Africa Africa s most populated city (21m ) Population growth rate of 6% per annum Projected Population of 25m by 2015 (U.N) Spatial distribution 70:30 (Urban: Rural) Average of 224 vehicles per kilometre as against the world average of 11 vehicles per km Over 70% of revenue is internally generated 45% of Nigeria s skilled labour force are in Lagos Lagos is Nigeria s corporate, commercial & industrial nerve centre providing jobs for people, taxes for the government and entertainment to tourists. 5

5 ECONOMIC OUTLOOK OF LAGOS STATE CONTD Over 10,000 industrial & commercial concerns are in Lagos Lagos accounts for over 80% of international air traffic in Nigeria Lagos accounts for over 70% of national maritime cargo freight and seaport activities in Nigeria It contributes 30 percent ($52bn) to the nation s GDP and is the leading contributor to the non-oil sector GDP. Lagos is home to about 2,000 industrial complexes, 10,000 commercial ventures and 22 industrial estates Lagos accounts for over 50 percent of Nigeria s energy consumption

6 ECOLOGICAL OUTLOOK OF LAGOS STATE Lagos is known to be the smallest state in Nigeria with a population of 21million people out of NIGERIA s estimated 160million people Lagos State is a low-lying coastal region occupying 180km of Nigeria s estimated 900km coastline. The state covers an approximately 3577sqkm which represents 0.45% of Nigeria s territorial land mass. The low-lying land, wet-lands and water occupy 78% of the entire land mass of the state. It is also known that about 85% of the state population resides in just 37% of the state territorial land mass.

7 Lagos State drains two-thirds of South-west Nigeria and is characterized by wetlands and basin for 5nos major upstream rivers from neighbouring states to discharge into the Atlantic Ocean. 8 CLIMATE CHANGE CHALLENGES IN LAGOS STATE Lagos State is confronted with a barrage of challenges as it relates to the question of Climate Change such as: Industrial Pollution Inadequate Waste Management mechanism Emission from dumpsites resulting from internal combustion high levels of emissions Rise in sea level leading to coastal inundation Coastal, Urban and River flooding Emission from motor vehicles Trailers, tankers, lorries which are used and second hand vehicles imported from abroad Indiscriminate felling of trees Inadequate access to cooking Gas etc Environmentally unfriendly cooking mechanism such as use of firewood.

9 Lagos State also faces challenges of environmental sustainability due to poverty, bio-diversity loss and other factors. Therefore, strategic means are required to address sustainable development challenges like effective environmental governance and the improvement of access of Lagosians to sustainable energy resources.

Sensitisation, Public Awareness, Enlightenment and Advocacy on all Environmental issues at Informal Sectors Hosted 5years of International Climate Change Summit Climate Change Workshops in all Local Government within the State School Advocacy (establishment of over 500nos Climate Change clubs) Demonstrative Media Campaigns in local and indigenous languages Sensitisation and collaboration with NGOs and Civil Societies and Multilateral agencies (e.g.undp) Regional Collaboration with neighbouring States

Development and implementation of Policies, programmes and projects engendered towards Climate Change Management Development of a Lagos State Climate Change Policy Development of Lagos State Energy Policy Creation of Lagos State Parks and Garden (planted over 3.5million trees in the past 5years) Creation of Enabling environment for Installation of LPG plants to eliminate use of wood (2nos plants were established in 2013). Encouragement of use of Renewable Energy (Proposal for establishment of Lagos State Centre for Applied Sustainability is on-going. Solar powered street light on-going) Encouragement of PPP arrangement for Waste-to-Energy and Waste-to-Wealth
