6 Smart and Skilled The NSW Government s Smart and Skilled reforms will change the state s vocational education and training system to better meet the needs of students and the businesses that employ them. The reforms, which start on 1 January 2015, aim to give eligible people access to government-subsidised training in industry areas where there are jobs. 8 Apprenticeships & traineeships at your workplace Join the growing number of employees who choose to learn while they earn. WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP? Apprenticeships combine paid work and structured training to allow you to achieve a nationally recognised qualification to become a qualified tradesperson. An apprenticeship arrangement is usually between two and four years and can be completed part-time or full-time, depending on your employment arrangements. Competency based progression means you can accelerate through your apprenticeship at a pace that is right for you and your workplace. Apprenticeship courses will have an in the course summary listing, in each course section of this career guide. WHAT IS A TRAINEESHIP? A traineeship offers a great solution to the old issue of no experience, no job. A traineeship combines paid work and formal training at the certificate II to advanced diploma level and is available across a wide range of contemporary jobs and vocations, including office administration, information technology, finance, community service and health, transport and many more. A traineeship can be 12 to 36 months duration and can be undertaken either part-time or full-time depending on your employment arrangements. Traineeship courses will have a in the course summary listing, in each course section of this career guide. WHY INVEST IN AN APPRENTICESHIP OR TRAINEESHIP? Earning while you re learning is one of the easiest and most practical ways to overcome the challenge all young people face when starting out in their career: no experience, no job; no job, no experience. As a trainee or apprentice you are employed with a structured training plan in place to ensure you develop the skills and knowledge you need to be successful in your job and gain a nationally recognised qualification while gaining hands on experience. Apprenticeships and traineeships are not just for school leavers and young workers. They also offer excellent pathways for career upgraders, or for people re-entering the workforce, or simply choosing to shift to a new career path. 9 HOW TO GET AN APPRENTICESHIP OR TRAINEESHIP STEP ONE: Choose an occupation Choose an area that interests you, or that you have some skills in. A careers advisor or counsellor can help you work this out. Organise some work experience in that industry. Even a week or two in a voluntary role can give you an idea of what a job in that field might be like. STEP TWO: Find an employer Next, you ll need to find employment in the industry where you would like to undertake your apprenticeship or traineeship. You can: check the employment sections of newspapers for vacancies register with the Northern Sydney Institute s CareersConnect online at tafensw.edu.au or contact check vacancies on job search websites contact a Group Training Organisation or visit www. nswgrouptraining.com.au do a pre-apprenticeship course. This is another great way to get started. The skills you learn can give you up to a full year s credit towards your apprenticeship. Contact the Northern Sydney Institute to find out more. STEP THREE: Apply for a traineeship or apprenticeship Get it in writing. Your employer is required to contact an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC) and complete a Training Contract. The AAC will provide you and your employer with information on government incentives that are available. STEP FOUR: Start your training with US! You will need to obtain your Unique Stident Identifier (USI) prior to your enrolment. Go to and click Create your USI. Then get in touch with the Northern Sydney Institute to confirm your start date. You will need to have your signed Training Contract or Training Plan Proposal, from your AAC as proof of your apprenticeship or traineeship. 12 Hair & BEAUTY Your career in hairdressing straightened out Certificate II Certificate III Certificate IV Diploma in Hairdressing in Hairdressing in Hairdressing of Salon Management Employment options: salon assistant or TVET student at school Work alongside the creative salon team and assist with the day-to-day functional running of the salon. Prepare clients for the salon services, organise and maintain the work areas, dry hair to shape and make sure the customer s experience is enjoyable. Employment options: hairdresser/stylist Most hairdressers start as an apprentice in a salon. You will be employed by the salon and attend classes at the same time, learning both on and off the job. An apprenticeship usually takes two years. A fast-track one year course is available for a commercial fee. Employment option: specialist hairdresser A specialist hairdresser has the drive and the vision to lead a winning creative, artistic salon team. As a leader within the salon the specialist stylist will be required to develop a blend of complex technical and leadership skills. Advanced skills training is a vital part of keeping ahead of the game to become a successful hairdresser. Employment options: salon owner or manager Salon managers train, recruit, and supervise staff. You ll be responsible for all the salon operations. Manage the business effectively and efficiently in areas such as business planning, financial management, marketing and quality management. You will learn how to establish and manage a salon, build, maintain and monitor a client base, and supervise and train junior staff. Additional skills in technical leadership, integrating trends and product innovation into creative styling, and high level individual creative design are also covered. The course will prepare you equally well whether you are interested in working as a session stylist for film and television as it does for salon work. Elective subjects give you the chance to expand your technical skills in allied areas such as specialist make-up. The Northern Sydney Institute s students are regularly involved in major industry events such as the International Hair Show (IHS) or the International Make-up Artist Trade Show (IMATS). 12

15 Hair & beauty Your career in beauty is looking good Certificate II Certificate III Certificate IV Diploma in Retail Make-up and Skincare Employment options: make-up technician/assistant, retail cosmetic assistant A retail cosmetic assistant provides specialist beauty advice and services in a retail department store or boutique make-up and skincare store. This qualification will also allow you to work as a bridal and special functions make-up technician and will give you the entry requirements needed to enrol in the Diploma of Specialist Makeup services. Certificate II in Beauty Services Employment options: beautician As a beautician, you ll perform mini-facials, eye treatments, waxing treatments and makeup application. Working within a retail or salon environment, a beautician may be required to undertake other functions such as reception and retail duties. It is also possible to specialise in either photographic make-up or nail extensions. in Beauty Therapy Employment options: beauty therapist Designed for apprentices in the industry and usually takes two years. You ll be employed by a salon and attend classes at the same time, learning both on and off the job. A beauty therapist carries out facial and body treatments to enhance the appearance of their clients, including corrective skin, electro-therapy and eye treatments, as well as the application of bridal make-up, non-surgical skin rejuvenation, spa manicures and pedicures and hair removal. of Beauty Therapy Employment options: beauty therapist, salon manager/ owner, spa therapist The door opener. Start your own salon, work internationally or advancing into para-medical skin care. Possibilities could include becoming a spa therapist using advanced beauty therapy skills such as aesthetic aromatherapy, use of essential oils and spa treatments including aromatic massage, reflexology and manual lymphatic drainage. Diploma in Nail Technology Employment options: nail technician Nail technicians perform manicures and pedicures in a beauty salon, spa, hair or nail salon. The diploma course provides the practical skills needed to perform health and beauty treatments for the whole body while giving you a sound understanding in areas such as anatomy, physiology, skin science, nutrition, electricity and cosmetic chemistry. With such a vast range of skills learnt throughout this qualification, your employability is very high. Working with industry, the Northern Sydney Institute has developed a pathway to take you from Certificate III in Fitness to the Certificate IV in Fitness, to offer you the ultimate work/life balance career path. On completion of the Certificate III you can apply for registration with Fitness Australia as a gym instructor and/or group excercise instructor and get a head start by working in the industry whilst studying the Certificate IV. Combining online and face-to-face learning, this intensive training program could see you fully qualified and registered as a personal trainer before you know it. TEMPORARY VISA HOLDERS Holders of temporary visas can enrol in the Northern Sydney Institute s courses, if places are available and all course entry requirements have been met. Enrolment conditions apply, depending on the visa subclass. Most temporary visa holders pay the course and tuition fees. TAFE NSW will conduct an audit of residency status following enrolment. 32 Get recognition for all your hard work in your career learning or study. Here s how! APPLY FOR RECOGNITION AND YOU COULD FINISH YOUR COURSE SOONER Previous study, experience at work or even volunteering in the community can all count towards recognition of prior learning (RPL). TAFE NSW has a process of assessing RPL and as a student of the Northern Sydney Institute, you can apply for RPL in as many units as you like (fees will apply). The process includes providing evidence of your experience plus an interview with a trained assessor. Depending on what evidence you have, the assessor might also suggest an activity such as a challenge test or a workplace observation to give you a chance to show us what you can do. If you are found to be eligible for recognition for a unit of competency then the rest is easy, you ll automatically get a pass for that subject. Keep recognition in mind when you enrol. The sooner we know about it the better, preferably within the first three weeks of enrolment. HOW TO APPLY FOR RECOGNITION A bit of experience can help you enjoy and do well in your course but if you think you ve been there and done that, ask your teacher or the campus Course Information Officer about applying for recognition.
