FACILITIES Men s Tennis Head Coach 47 5 Gene Thompson has served as head men s tennis coach since 2005. Thompson has guided the Trojans to 96 wins and 40 losses in sevenseasons and 57 wins and 27 loses in CIAA with one CIAA Runner Up in 2009; A NCAA at Large Bid 2009; 4 3rd place finishes in the post season play and reaching the Semis Finals in 2010 and 2011 in the CIAA Spring Championships. His teams have won 4 consecu ve CIAA Divisional Championships. He has coached seven all conference players and four finalists. He has assisted the women s basketball team for the past 5 years where they were 79 58. Thompson coached the men s and women s tennis teams at Lincoln University part me for 10 years before coming to Virginia State University in January 2005. Before coming to VSU, Coach Thompson coached in Delaware with stops in Virginia and North Carolina, where his high school basketball coaching record was 489 wins and 227 loses. He coached football (A state tle in 1971); Track & Field (A state tle in 1995); and tennis. He was name State Coach of the Year in Basketball, Tennis, and Track & Field. He was also named Conference Basketball Coach of the Year nine mes. He has worked the fame Five Star Basketball Camp for over 30 years along side coaches like Hubbie Brown, Rick Pi no, and John Calipari. He coach Chris an La ner, Grant Hill, Monte Williams, and Vince Carter on his camp teams. The Five Star Camp is where all the great ones a end. A na ve of Newport News, Virginia, Thompson graduated from Carver High School and a ended Compton College and graduate from Elizabeth City State University, BS. FACILITIES Men s Tennis Season Outlook 48 5 The Virginia State University men s tennis team will feature an experienced lineup this season with four returning players from last season s team. The Trojans were crowned CIAA Northern Division champions a er an undefeated regular season against the CIAA Northern Divisional teams. Sophomore twin brothers, Nicholas and Ma hew Brown, were both selected to the 2011 All CIAA First team and the Trojans reached the semi finals at the CIAA Spring Sports Championships. Emmanuel Haug (senior/ Munich, Germany) ranked 18th in the ITA Atlan c Region Poll will be looked upon to lead VSU. Haug went 4 7 overall playing in the number one spot for the Trojans a season ago. He is also ranked 10th in the ITA Atlan c Region Poll in doubles play with teammate Avery Saunders. Senior Avery Saunders (Midlothian, VA) will join Haug in a leadership role providing the Trojans with a strong backbone in singles and doubles play. Saunders went 6 9 spli ng his playing me between the number two and four posi ons in 2011. 2011 First Team All CIAA twin brothers, Ma hew and Nicholas Brown (sophomore/ Los Angeles, CA) will be counted on for solid play in both singles and doubles compe on. Ma hew concluded the 2011 season with a nine match winning streak leading the Trojans with an 11 1 record playing in the number three posi on. Ma hew teamed up with his brother Nicholas in doubles compe on. The two combined for a 11 6 overall record, ranking second amongst the conference at the number two doubles.
FACILITIES Men s Tennis Season Outlook 49 5 Javain Gardnier (senior/ San Francisco, CA) and Gene Thompson, Jr. (junior/ New Castle, DE) will add depth to the Virginia State lineup. Gardnier returns a er a two year layoff from the program. He played at the number two posi on on the 2009 team that went to the Div. II NCAA Tournament. Thompson is a promising sophomore that will add experience and depth. The team adds three freshmen to the roster: Evan Dirksen (Chicago, IL), Nicholas Pfab (Powha an, VA), and k wmane Tonkins (Newport News, VA). All three will be expected to challenge for posi ons in the singles lineup, as well as provide the Trojans with addi onal doubles lineup combina ons. Dirksen comes to Virginia State by way of Morgan Park High School in Chicago, IL where he was a Presiden al Scholar. He is 5 8, 160 lbs. and was a part of the famous tennis program in Chicago, Love TO Serve. Pfab is from nearby Powhatan High School where he played as the number one singles and also number one doubles on his high school team. He finished with an overall singles record of 13 3 and finished first in doubles with a record of 13 4 in 2011. Pfab s was also the captain of his 9 3 high school team. Tonkins a ended An Achievable Dream High School in Newport News, VA and stands 5 7, 155 lbs. In high school Tonkins posted an overall record of 8 1 in singles compe on and 7 2 in doubles compe on. Tonkins was named the 2011 Male Athlete of the Year at his high school. The Trojans enter the 2012 season ranked 7th in the ITA Atlan c Region rankings.
