Burnt Mill Rd. 203 S. Burnt Mill Rd. Last October, Cherry Hill East girls tennis first singles player Stephanie Yanasov stormed onto the South Jersey tennis scene. After sitting out the NJSIAA-required 30 days after transferring from Bishop Eustace, Yanasov joined the Cougars and dominated, dropping just one match in team play and advancing to the semifinals of the state singles tournament. This season, opponents will get a double dose of Yanasov. Stephanie s twin sister Natalie will hit the court as a Cougar for the first time and will bring an extra weapon to an already deep Cherry Hill East team. Stephanie and Natalie attended Bishop Eustace as freshmen and played for the Crusaders girls tennis program in Stephanie played first singles and Natalie played second singles, with each winning about 90 percent of their matches. Last year, the Yanasovs transferred to Cherry Hill East. NJSI- AA rules require athletes to sit out 30 days at the beginning of the season after transferring. While Stephanie decided to join the team after the waiting period, Natalie instead chose to sit out the season and focus on school. Natalie said she is excited to be back on the tennis courts and is enjoying the unity the team has displayed early on. I like seeing how we re together as a team, she said. Head coach Mary Jewell hopes Natalie is the final piece to the championship puzzle for Cherry Hill East. Last year, the Cougars finished 20-2, but were upset at home in the South Jersey Group IV championship match against Lenape. The Cougars, leading 2-0, lost the final three matches to lose the championship in heartbreaking fashion. Nearly all of Cherry Hill East s starting lineup from 2014 returns this year. I want to get to the finals this year, she said. I ve worked on a lot of footwork. The focus in preseason isn t on individuals, however. This season, the team is putting a greater emphasis on team bonding. There s more like team bonding, flexibility and discipline, Stephanie said. We re making sure we re all working together. I m hoping that we ll bring the team together, senior captain Gabrielle Zimmerman said. If we really unite, we ll have a better chance. The players have used the sour memory of last season s loss as motivation for this year. Zimmerman is especially determined to overcome the loss. She was the last player on court in last year s championship match. We re going to change some things, she said. We re doing more team bonding stuff, hitting a lot and doing things differently. Zimmerman is a testament to Cherry Hill East s depth this season. She played first singles in 2014 before Stephanie joined the team and won the Camden County Singles Tournament. My experience, being able to play No. 1, really opened my eyes to those kind of players and making it easier to play No. 2 singles, Zimmerman said. Zimmerman is ready to forget the memory of how last season ended. Her focus is on making her senior season one to remember. I just want to enjoy this year, she said. I ve been through a lot, and I just want to enjoy the year and have fun.
