1 For 80 years, Norfolk State University has played a pivotal, leadership role in advancing educational attainment in the Hampton Roads region by creating one student scholar, one engaged faculty and one community partnership at a time. See how: Norfolk State University was selected as the lead institution in a $25 million cybersecurity education and workforce pipeline initiative. The University is to lead a consortium consisting of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Department of Energy National Laboratories and a public school district. Vice President Joe Biden selected Norfolk State University as the site for the announcement on the cybersecurity grant and consortium. Norfolk State University has been selected by the Virginia Cyber Security Commission as one of the sites for the Commission s Town Hall meetings to introduce the commission to the public. NSU will host the town hall scheduled for June 9. Dr. Mikhail Noginov, professor of physics, was named as one of Virginia s Outstanding Scientists for 2015 by Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and the Science Museum of Virginia. He was also named an Optical Society Fellow in Dr. Aswini Pradhan, professor of engineering, has received the 2015 Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia and Dominion Resources. It is the third time in four years that an NSU faculty member has received this award the highest in the Commonwealth of Virginia Dr. Frances Williams, professor of engineering, in 2013 and Dr. Rasha Morsi, professor of engineering, in Norfolk State University recently opened its newest classroom building. The 140,000 square-foot structure features 32 classrooms, five computer labs, 20 group study rooms and 10 nursing and medical technology labs. The nursing labs have 48 beds with 18 of those used for simulated case scenarios. In the past few years, NSU also has built a new Student Center, Student Services building and a library. 1
2 The NCAA Accelerating Academic Success Program has approved significant funding for the Norfolk State University Department of Athletics and its academic improvement efforts for the second time in two years. The selection committee, based on the success of the University s original academic improvement initiatives, has awarded NSU an additional $395,000 over the course of the original grant period ( ), bringing the total award to $560,000. NSU has been named a Military Friendly School for It achieved this designation for the sixth consecutive year. The recognition means that Norfolk State University exhibits leading practices that support military students through programs and policies that attract, retain and ensure that military students are successful. The University has partnered with the City of Norfolk to provide Norfolk High School students who graduate, meet the required criteria and enroll at the NSU with scholarships. NSU s chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society received the Key Chapter Award for It is one of Golden Key s most prestigious honors. Only 25 percent of the Society achieves this status. The Ethelyn R. Strong School of Social Work is recognized for its MSW clinical specialization in military social work, preparing you to provide services to service members, veterans and their families. The Peace Corps has recognized Norfolk State University as a top producer of Peace Corps volunteers in its 2014 and 2015 rankings. NSU is listed as third among Historically Black Colleges and Universities for both years. In 2014, Dr. Jedidah Isler (B.S. 03) became the first black woman to graduate from Yale University with a Ph.D. in astronomy. Her research involves supermassive black holes that reside at the centers of the most massive galaxies, such as the Milky Way. 2
3 Dr. Kai Zhang, 11, NSU s first Ph.D. recipient in materials science and engineering, won the Council of Historically Black Graduate Schools/ProQuest Dissertation Award. His dissertation results have been published in more than 30 peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Zhang received his award and gave a presentation on his dissertation, Development of Magnetic and Optic Nanomaterials for Biomedical Applications, at the CHBGS conference in San Antonio. Paralympic Gold Medalist April Holmes 96 was honored by the National Collegiate Athletic Association with its NCAA Inspiration Award, which is given to an individual who has confronted a life-altering situation and used perseverance, dedication and determination to overcome the event and now serves as a role model to others. Holmes, who is a 14x world-record holder, won the gold at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing. Norfolk State University was voted School of the Year by the Virginia Association of College and University Residence Halls (VACURH) State Board in The designation represented the first time an HBCU received the recognition. The Virginia Board of Education has granted School of Education programs at Norfolk State University the approved status. Twenty-three teacher preparatory and other school personnel programs at NSU meet all the criteria for education programs. The School of Education also is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. NSU Athletics Director Marty L. Miller was named as a member of the 2014 inductee class of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. Miller is already a member of the CIAA s John B. McLendon Hall of Fame, the Hampton Roads Sports and Hampton Roads African American Sports halls of fame, and the NSU Athletics Foundation Sports Hall of Fame. NSU has launched a three-year degree program in interdisciplinary studies. The accelerated degree program prepares students for today s fast-paced, high-demand, and multiple task-oriented work force. 3
4 Affordable Colleges Online has ranked the Norfolk State University School of Extended Learning as having the second most affordable online college or university degree program in Virginia for BestOnlineColleges.org has recognized NSU s special education degree program as one of the best in the nation for the academic year. Norfolk State University has been ranked a top college in Virginia for return on investment, according to AffordableCollegesOnline.org (AC Online), which identified the 28 Virginia colleges where students who graduate from these colleges earn more over their lifetimes, on average, than graduates from other Virginia institutions. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has awarded NSU $120,000 to help students enrolled in the accelerated second degree to the bachelor of science in nursing program. The grant, provided through the New Careers in Nursing scholarship program, aims to increase the diversity of the nursing workforce and increase the number of bachelor of science prepared nurses. The Hampton Roads Community Foundation awarded Norfolk State $67, 625 to help launch the Spartan Hope Academy, a new residential learning community that will provide an array of support services to a group of full-time residential freshmen. Dr. William Agyei, associate professor of sociology, served as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Botswana during the academic year. The Fulbright program is the most widely recognized and prestigious international exchange in the world. A study has found that Norfolk State University provides $171 million in annual economic impact to the Hampton Roads region. 4
5 During , NSU s men s basketball team secured just the fourth-ever undefeated conference season in the history of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) with a record of The Spartans became the first MEAC team to accomplish this feat since the basketball season. The Association for Advancement of Colleges and Schools of Business (AACSB) International has reaffirmed the accreditation of NSU s School of Business through Norfolk State University has been named a Best for Vets College for 2013, according to a survey conducted by the Military Times. Out of more than 650 schools responses to 150 questions, only, 68 schools, including NSU, made the list. Norfolk State University has received the Quality Standards Certification from the United States Distance Learning Association. NSU, the largest public HBCU in Virginia, is the only HBCU in the nation to be awarded this Certification and the first public University in the Commonwealth! Washington Monthly magazine rated Norfolk State University among the top master s universities. G.I. Jobs magazine designated NSU as a military friendly school for the second consecutive year. Norfolk State University was named as part of a $4 million grant awarded by the National Nuclear Security Administration to 22 Historically Black Colleges and Universities and six Department of Energy sites in key Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics areas. Norfolk State University has partnered with four universities in a $1.8 million grant initiative, establishing a consortium that will train students in the national security and intelligence fields. 5
6 Norfolk State University and Virginia Beach City Public Schools created a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) program that gives high school students college credit and set them on a path to continue their education beyond high school. NSU s School of Extended Learning and College of Science, Engineering and Technology are part of the partnership. Norfolk State University developed the only $6.5 million cleanroom facility in the Hampton Roads region where devices with features smaller than the dimensions of a human hair are created. Norfolk State University s Creative Gaming and Simulation Lab developed a program exclusively for training nurses (VNurse). VNurse caters to the development and reassessment of nursing skills by using tools like research, evaluation and virtual world cases based on the experiences of a nurse. Norfolk State University won six Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships during the academic year. Three of the six championships were first-ever titles in football, men s basketball and women s bowling. The men s cross country team won its fourth straight title and the 11th in 12 years, while the men s indoor track and field team won its seventh consecutive title. The men s outdoor track and field team also won its seventh consecutive title. The men s basketball team in 2012 advanced to its first-ever National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament where as the No. 15 seed, it pulled off a historic upset of the No. 2 seed (Missouri) and became just the fifth team in NCAA history to beat a No. 2.. The Norfolk State University Concert Choir has performed at the White House for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama on two separate occasions. Norfolk State University was selected as a destination campus by the Hampton Roads Transit Authority to host two light rail stations the NSU station on Brambleton Avenue and the Ballentine/Broad Creek station. 6
