1 The Fall for the Lady Hornets has been very productive with the addition of 4 new Hornets. The Hornets welcomed back 6 Seniors, 2 Juniors, and 4 Sophomores including MEAC All Conference members, Sandy Hawthorne, Nicole Gazzola, and Rookie of the Year, Vanessa Washington. This year the Hornets look to top a 21 win season including a program best 14 game winning streak. The Lady Hornets opened up the fall season at Villanova University competing against Villanova and University of Delaware. Following that, they traveled to George Washington to face the Colonels and the Georgetown Hoyas. DSU wrapped up the fall season with two wins against Wilmington University and a win against Chesapeake College.

2 Hometown: Effingham County, GA Position: Pitcher/Shortstop Major: Movement Science Class: Junior What do you like to do in your free time? Read, play almost any other sport, and eat. I especially like when I get to eat with friends and family. What is your ideal vacation spot? Probably anywhere that I can swim or ski and has a river. So basically an island or a mountain. Hometown: Silver Spring, MD Position: Catcher Major: Movement Science Class: Freshmen Why did you decide to come to DSU? I decided to come to DSU because I was really interested in playing for the softball team. Also, they had a major that would help me get closer to becoming a physical therapist. What did you do before Softball? Before softball I was 8 years old and was playing rec soccer with my cousin and sister on the weekends.

3 Hometown: Bensalem, PA Position: Pitcher Major: Business Management Minor: Human Resources Class: Freshmen What is your dream job? My dream job is to open up 2-3 preschools so every kid has a chance to learn new things in a great environment before going to kindergarten. What is something cool that has happened to you recently? I got to see my favorite artist Nicki Minaj preform live. Hometown: Artesia, CA Position: Outfield Major: Undecided Class: Freshmen Why did you choose to play Softball? One of my childhood friends played softball and asked me to try out with her. After one season of playing, I made All-Stars so I stuck with it. What is the coolest thing you have ever done? The coolest thing I have ever done is zip line over the tree tops of Kauai!

4 Major: Biology with a focus in Pre-Med - Position: Catcher - Jersey #4 Current Job and Location: Currently working with Merit Medical in Pearland, Texas as a Production Scheduler/Planner. What was your favorite moments at DSU? Favorite moments were the trips across the country. I never visited anywhere outside the east coast and to get to travel to Hawaii and Vegas to play was exciting. To also get to play against teams like UCLA, Nebraska, Alabama and Cal-Berkeley was an experience in its self with getting hits against those top ranked pitchers. Having the time with the teammates in the dorms and retaining such a tight bond with those that you began college with, is another experience I would never want to lose. Keeping in contact with old teammate is such a memory lane moment every time we talk. There are always stories that we can tell over and over again like it was the first time and still get the same laugh out of it. What do you miss most about DSU? I miss my teammates and the small town feel of campus in Dover. Texas and other areas parts of Delaware, seem so rushed and overwhelming. The calm, cool, collected feel on campus and among everyone on the team was a stress relief all of its own. The relationships that were created among my teammates will always be missed and I would not change a thing about any of them. We each have our own bond and all have different stories with each other. To have that and still play on a field as one is something you can never duplicate or able to teach to others. It is only something I hope others were able to see and take on to each of the following classes. Accomplishments at Delaware State: Two-time All-MEAC First Team (2005, 06) Two-time All-MEAC Second Team (2004; 07) MEAC All-Rookie (2004) 2005 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team. DSU and MEAC all-time home run leader (44) Hornets career leader in runs batted in (164), doubles (45) and hits (224) DSU single season leader in home runs (15) and RBI (53) Set DSU records with 14 home runs and 52 RBI in 2005 Led MEAC in home runs and slugging % in 2005 Helped lead Hornets to MEAC North titles in 2004 & 05 Led DSU to MEAC Tournament championship game in 2004 & 06 Set DSU freshman record with 9 home runs in 2004 Career.375 hitter

5 The DSU Hornets voluntered and served the community in a number of service events this fall which include: Boys and Girls Club 5K Run/Walk Fundraiser Senior Olympics Track and Field event Power of the Pink 5K Fundraiser Govenor Bacon Health Centers - Haunted Hayride Packed and Donated Gift Boxes for Operation Christmas Child Congratulations to our Hornets who were accepted into the National Society of Leadership and Success Jessica Shalongo Mika Lumsden Khaliyah Flournory Keep up the great work and continue to achieve on and off the field!

6 Vanessa Washington, hailing from Sacramento California came in as a powerful freshman in fall During the spring season she was a major factor for DSU s softball team. Vanessa said she expected to come in as a freshman and start, become better at the game and mature as a college athlete. Vanessa played first base during the season and made a couple appearance at catcher. Vanessa received the Rookie of the Year award and she said It felt really nice, and was such an honor to get the rookie of the year. Vanessa is a political science major and is now a first semester sophomore. Not only does Vanessa do outstanding on the field but academically last year her GPA landed her on the President s and Dean s list.
