3 Head Coach Darryl Jacobs DARRYL JACOBS MEN S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH SECOND SEASON 9-19 RECORD Coach Jacobs enters his second season at Virginia State University. The program is headed in the right direction. Now we must be patient, be persistence and strive to be perfect, states Coach Jacobs. Prior to his arrival to Virginia State University he was the head men s basketball coach at Clark Atlanta University from While at Clark Atlanta University, he was able build the Panthers into one of the elite programs in the country. He led the Panthers to two consecutive NCAA tournament appearances ( ); while also leading them to their first SIAC Tournament Championship (2011) in 46 years. Coach Jacobs was also named SIAC Coach of Year, Atlanta Tip-Off Club/ Naismith Georgia College Coach of the year and HRSN runner up for National Coach of the year in His teams at Clark Atlanta from were rank nationally on numerous occasions and in 2010 finished ranked 22nd nationally. Coach Jacobs has been the head coach at numerous collegiate institutions where he has been able to garner championships and several coaches of the year honors. Known as a tireless worker and game strategist his teams have been able to defeat several DI programs during his career. Many consider him one of the elite up and coming coaches in the country. Coach Jacobs is a native of Paterson, NJ and has over 20 years of collegiate coaching experience to his credit. Coach Jacobs was a two sports standout at William Penn University where he started at running back on the football team and point guard on the men's basketball team. He has played several years professionally in South America and in the USBL. Coach Jacobs has served on the NCAA Men s Basketball South Region Ranking Committee, Co-Chairperson of the Health and Wellness Program (Clark Atlanta University) and vice president for the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men s basketball coaches committee. In September of 2012, Jacobs was appointed to serve as a member of the NCAA Division II Men s Basketball Committee. He is also a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches as well as the Black Coaches Association. He received his Bachelor s Degree in Business Finance/Accounting from William Penn University in 1988.
4 Trojans Season Outlook Looking to make a splash in his second season, Virginia State University s head men s basketball coach, Darryl Jacobs has upgraded his team with talent and toughness. Jacobs will return 70% of his offense from last season and hopes he has found the missing pieces to his winning formula. He is expecting an immediate impact from several transfers and one freshman to his team. In their last seven games of the season, the Trojans went 5-2 down the stretch. At home, the Trojans went 7-3 inside Daniel Gymnasium last season. This season they will host 16 home basketball games hoping to turn their home court advantage into many wins. Leading the hungry Trojans will be Kenny Mitchell (senior/ Atlanta, GA) who was named to the All-CIAA First Team and was also named to the BoxtoRow HBCU All-American Third Team. Mitchell ranked fifth in the CIAA conference in points per game (15.9) and eighth in rebounds per game (6.5). He led the Trojans in scoring in 16 games and also in rebounding in 17 games last season. He reached double-digit scoring in 23 games and had four games when he recorded a double-double. The backbone of the Trojans will be three year starter at guard, Mike Bynum (senior/norfolk, VA). Bynum ranked third in the CIAA s three-point field goal percentage (42.9 %) and his partner last season in the back court, guard DeVonte Williams (sophomore/ Hampton, VA) ranked sixth in the conference in assists per game (1.4). Coach Jacobs has added depth and versatility through great recruiting efforts to his Trojan team. Not only have we added versatility, we also have added physicality and toughness to our team. We will be able to play any type of basketball our opponent would like to play, comments Coach Jacobs. The Trojans plan on controlling the tempo of their games with relentless defensive pressure. Last season, Virginia State ranked second in the CIAA conference in defensive field goal percentage by holding their opponents to an average of 41% shooting. Offensively, VSU plans on running many different motion sets with quick hitting plays. With the added depth to our team, the level of competition will increase and as a result this will raise our overall play as a team Jacobs adds. Newcomers to the Trojans basketball team will be Division I transfers; Jeremy Canty (guard, 6-2), Christopher Grier (guard, 6-3), Alex Jackson (guard/forward, 6-5), and Jacolby Wells (forward/center, 6-7). The Division II transfers are Allen Harris (guard/forward, 6-5) and John Holleman (forward/center, 6-8) while adding Junior College transfer Michael Mann (guard, 6-3) with freshman Jahmir White (guard, 6-0). All will be expected to contribute to the Trojans success. The Trojans also return four starters from last season with five of their supporting cast. Virginia State will open up their season with seven straight home games. The Trojans hope their level of intensity is contagious as they look to make a championship run in
