3 MEN S BASKETBALL COACHES MILES SMITH JR. HEAD COACH Phone: miles.smith@wilson.edu Miles Smith Jr. is the first head coach of the Wilson men s basketball program. The program is in its first season of competition in the NCAA Division III and the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC). Prior to taking the helm at Wilson, Smith spent one year at The College of New Jersey as an assistant coach. He was responsible for player development, scouting, game preparation and management, and recruiting of athletes. Smith also served three seasons as an assistant coach at Mercer County Community College (MCCC) where, in 2010, he helped coach MCCC to the Region 19 Championship and an appearance in the NJACC National Tournament. Coach Smith is a 2009 graduate of Johnson State College, earning a bachelor s degree in Anthropology/Sociology. Prior to Johnson State, Smith also attended Mercer County Community College where he graduated in 2005 with an associate degree in liberal arts. Smith, a four-year starter during his collegiate career, was team captain and served as President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). He is also a full-time admissions recruiter for Wilson. BEN SCHLOTTER ASSISTANT COACH Ben Schlotter enters his first year as assistant coach for Phoenix men s basketball. He is a graduate of Knox College, where he received a B.A. in economics. Schlotter also attended Waynesburg University where he studied sports broadcasting. At Knox, Schlotter was a student assistant and manager of the men s basketball team for two seasons. He also played on the Knox men s golf team. SEASON PREVIEW: READY TO MAKE HISTORY The Wilson College men s basketball team heads into their inaugural season with the drive to make an impact in conference play. Miles Smith Jr., who assumed the role of head coach in February 2013, believes that there is no time to sit back and test the waters in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC). In a well-matched conference such as the NEAC, Smith says that any team could win on any given night. We have to compete every day in every game and stay disciplined on the floor. Smith s 11-man roster consists of Wilson newcomers, but he is confident that the players will be positive representatives for the college. The team will rely on sophomore forward Ben Holl, junior guard Rahim Bunch and junior forward Mylan Ward for leadership on the court. Rahim is a very smart point guard, Ben possesses an outstanding knowledge of the game, which will help our younger players, and Mylan s extraordinary athleticism will be key in helping the team persevere. Eight freshman complete the Wilson men s lineup and Smith is enthusiastic about their potential. Rasul Jackson and Kiefer Jefferson-Grimes show immense potential, says Smith. Darren Mohamed has great shooting skills that we will put to work on offense, Marquise Beckett has an incredible work ethic and Shawn Price, Tyler Smallcomb and Zach Gasper have fundamental skills and ambitious attitudes that will make this team something special. As the first men s basketball team fielded by the College heads into their introductory season, Smith sees building a team environment as important as winning games. My goal is to create a culture that demands commitment from the players but also denies selfishness. We will always seek to improve and put the team first.
