1 CAC Kappa League Overview Background Guide Right The Guide Right Program, conceived in 1922, is the most important national service program of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. The purpose of the Guide Right Service Program is to place the training, experience, and friendly interest of successful men at the disposal of Young Men needing inspiration and counsel regarding their choice of a life s career, and to arouse the interest of the entire community in the problems of Young Men as they seek to realize lives of usefulness. Kappa League Under the umbrella of Guide Right, the National Service program for Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., The Kappa League is the leadership development component that engages Young Men at a critical point in their lives. The purpose of the Kappa League is to promote, and develop, the leadership potential of its members through the participation in club oriented activities, and at the same time, encourage them to raise their aspiration levels. Participants are Young Men in grades Kappa League areas of focus: 1. Phase I Self- Identity: Discipline, Assurance, Awareness, and Appearance 2. Phase II Training: Academic, Career-Choice, Preparation, and Organization 3. Phase III Competition: Politics, Career Advancement, and Sports 4. Phase IV Social: Religion, The Arts, Entertainment, Conversation/Communication, Etiquette/Manners 5. Phase V Health Education: Physical Fitness, Sex Education, Drugs, Heath & Safety Partners The Kappa League has formed a Partnership Agreement with Columbus Public Schools. This allows the program to recruit, and disseminate, other relevant information vertically within the school district. The partnership has been helpful in not only recruiting student participants, but has been productive in sourcing applicants for the Kenneth L. Howard Scholarship Fund section of the Kappa League program. An additional partner is the Todd Bell Resource Center at The Ohio State University. The Center provides tours, college planning, and student mentorship with an overnight Black Male Leadership Conference.
2 Scholarships Columbus (OH) Alumni Chapter Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Through Kappa League, college scholarships are awarded in the name of the Kenneth L. Howard Scholarship. Scholarships are one year, non-renewable, awards of $1,000. Annually, 5-6 awards are made based on academics, community service, an essay, and personal interview. Kappa League HBCU College Tour The Purpose of the Kappa League HBCU College Tour is help African American Young Men in their pursuit of attending college by providing resources, and exposure, to Post-Secondary options. Identified Need With the continued rise in educational expenses, and the reduction of funding sources, the expected family contribution is increasing, and further making the goal of college education harder to reach. While many mentoring programs tout their college acceptance rate, the statistic that should get more attention is the Persistence Rate. The Persistence Rate is the percentage of students that return to that same school beyond their first year. Invariably, the reason for not returning is financial. We believe a proper match between student, and college selection, directly supports a higher Persistence Rate. Kappa League Student Pool This season, 28 Young Men are active on our Kappa League program. They are from Central Ohio high schools, and self-identified themselves as having a high financial need. Student Example: 3.5 GPA Graduated High School with Associates Degree Accepted directly into Ohio State University s Engineering Program High Financial Need This profile is consistent across the board: Qualified students with a looming financial need. The Kappa League HBCU College Tour, along with establishing corporate scholarships, can be used as an example of a public/private partnership that addresses systemic issues of access to education, and encouraging diversity in the Actuarial Science, Business, and STEM fields, while also aligning with the recently announced White House Initiative of My Brother s Keeper.
