The post holder will work closely with the Lead Nurse Paediatrics and Head of Children s Nursing. Key result areas/ Main responsibilities To promote clinical governance and risk culture that is open and fair. To lead and support staff in establishing a clear, strong focus on patient safety and quality of care throughout the division. To work within the requirements of the Trust s Clinical and Social Care Governance framework, ensuring that all policies related to delivery of children s nursing services meet relevant

legislative and policy requirements. To support the achievement of relevant controls assurance standards for children s nursing service. Promote a culture of continuous service improvement amongst the staff, encouraging their participation and that of service users in reviewing and modernising current services and in service development. To educate staff on clinical governance and risk management principles and local strategy by organisation workshops and training to enable them to take an active role in the identification, analysis and management of risk. To encourage reporting by ensuring that staff can easily report incidents. To ensure that all incident reports are investigated and evaluated so that appropriate action may be taken. To integrate risk management activities by developing systems and processes to manage risks and identify and assess things that could go wrong. To learn and share safety lessons by encouraging staff to use root cause analysis to learn how and why incidents happen. To provide regular feedback to Clinical Risk Group To implement solutions with Children s Nursing Management Team and work with colleagues to prevent harm by ensuring improvements in care through changes in practice, process or systems. Develop action plans in conjunction with colleagues to reduce or eliminate risks, promote evidence based clinically effective care, enhance professional practice and reduce litigation costs. To initiate and contribute to the development, implementation and maintenance of policies, procedures, standards and protocols within the Children s nursing services and submit reports as required to the appropriate manager. To ensure implementation of recommendations from CEMACH reports, RQIA reviews and DHSS Circulars relating to children s nursing services. To liaise with the Head of Risk Management and Clinical Governance and integrate with the trust-wide Governance and Risk agenda. To work closely with the Paediatric Clinical Director for clinical risk management within Paediatrics and Neonatology To develop and update the Risk Register for children s nursing. To provide quarterly reports on trends and updated protocols and guidelines and changes in practice as a result of implemented action plans. To input into the trust-wide risk management database, DATIX, to log and grade incidents and outcomes for local and collective evaluation as appropriate. To maintain up to date knowledge of relevant area of practice and work in the clinical area as required. To have knowledge of all equipment used within children s units and neonatal unit and take responsibility for ensuring action on all MDEA (NI) alerts. To actively participate in and facilitate committees related to risk management, safety and quality improvement.

To initiate and participate in ongoing audit, e.g. monthly incident reporting, trend identification, statistics and analysis. To be responsible for resources required for Clinical Risk Management within the directorate. To be responsible for maintaining patient records within agreed standards and ensuring the quality of record keeping within the area of responsibility and advising staff as required. (NMC guidelines records and record keeping) To be aware of child protection guidelines and to analyse information regarding child protection issues. To audit against Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts Standards and benchmark against UK trusts to develop action plans to achieve the highest standards. To develop and maintain working relationships with other service managers. To work with the Head of Children s Nursing to ensure full compliance with all governance standards for the Trust s children s nursing services including the identification, assessment and management of risk and to maintain the safety of users, staff and others in accordance with relevant regulations, policies and procedures. To ensure the Trust s children s nursing services comply with all professional regulatory and requisite standards. Support the Head of Children s Nursing in ensuring professional statutory responsibility, accountability and regulation in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct: standards for conduct, performance and ethics, the Scope of Professional Practice. To take responsibility for own performance and take action to address identified personal development areas. Participate as required in the selection and appointment of staff reporting to him/her in accordance with procedures laid down by the Trust. Take such action as may be necessary in disciplinary matters in accordance with procedures laid down by the Trust. Promote the Trust s policies on equality of opportunity, and the promotion of good relations through his/her own actions, and ensure that these policies are adhered to by staff for which he/she has responsibility. General Management responsibilities Adhere to the Code of Conduct for HPSS managers which states that managers will be expected to work with integrity, honesty and openness, probity, accountability and respect, available on www.dhsspsni.gov.uk Ensure the appropriate governance and risk management arrangements are in place for the services you are responsible for and take appropriate action to identify and manage risk and to maintain safety of users, staff and others in accordance with relevant regulations, policies and procedures;

It is essential to ensure that the highest standards of infection prevention and control are maintained to ensure patient and client safety and maintain confidence in the Trust. As a Manager, you must ensure that you implement all instructions/ policy in this area and that all staff are made aware of and fully comply with these Where the postholder has responsibility for managing a budget, ensure that services are managed and developed both in accordance with agreed and funded priorities as set out on a yearly basis and in accordance with Standing Financial Instructions, particularly ensuring your compliance with payroll documentation procedures and timescales; Ensure the necessary arrangements are in place in regard to the Knowledge and Skills Framework outlines, where this applies, for the posts for which you have management responsibility and ensure that each member of staff has an annual development and performance review, a personal development plan and that arrangements are in place to ensure that staff have maximum opportunity to progress through gateways in their pay bands and to contribute effectively towards our objectives; Promote a culture of continuous service improvement amongst your staff, encouraging their participation and that of service users in reviewing and modernising current services and in service development; Make sure you are trained and competent in the relevant policies and procedures which apply to the management of staff and other resources and abide by these policies; seeking advice as necessary from senior management or specialist staff as necessary; Communicate effectively with staff and maintain productive working relationships amongst your staff and with others; Delegate appropriate responsibility and authority to staff in order to ensure optimum and effective service delivery and decisionmaking, whilst retaining overall accountability and responsibility for outcomes; Promote a culture of learning and development and facilitate arrangements for and participate in training and development of staff as agreed for the performance of their duties. Medical Appointment will be subject to a successful pre-employment health assessment. Holidays 27 days each year; 29 days after 5 years service; 33 days after 10 years service and 10 statutory and public holidays. Pension The postholder can participate in the Health and Social Care pension Scheme Probationary Period You will serve a probationary period of normally six months.
