1 Nursing & Midwifery Education JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE OF POST: Nurse Education Consultant: Full Time BAND: Band 7 (30,460-40,157) REPORTS TO: RESPONSIBLE TO: LOCATION: Senior Manager Head of HSC Clinical Education Centre HSC Clinical Education Centre Altnagelvin Area Hospital Site Job Summary: The post holder will be responsible for designing and delivering nursing in-service education to meet the identified needs of core clients and other healthcare providers. The post holder will take a lead role in delivering programmes. KEY RESULT AREAS 1. Setting Direction: 1.1 Work with core clients to identify the educational needs of clinical staff. 1.2 Be up to date with evidence-based practice to assist clinical colleagues in assessing need 2. Managing Services: 2.1 Assist managers to determine the type of programme required, for example, short courses, modules and workshops, practice development and learning sets 2.2 Undertake assessment of staff in clinical setting to determine safe and effective practice delivery; 2.3 Work with identified clinical colleagues to assess the learning needs of individual registered practitioners; 2.4 Assist managers to determine the type of programme required for preceptorship, mentorship and health care assistants 1
2 2.5 Work with the senior nurse education consultant to ensure delivery of planned programmes to core clients satisfaction; 2.6 Plan evidence based educational programmes to meet identified need & to include multiprofessional groups; 2.7 Work with various stakeholders, for example, Northern Ireland Council for Practice & Education (NIPEC), Universities, to develop and monitor programmes; 2.8 Participate in established quality assurance processes. 3. Working with Others: 3.2 Work with teaching colleagues to plan delivery of programmes in a flexible and responsive way; 3.3 Plan clinical updating time to maintain competence and knowledge; 3.4 Advise individual managers on content of tailor-made specialist programmes to meet identified needs of clinical staff; 3.5 Participate in the process of developing the business plan for the Nursing and Midwifery Education Unit; 3.6 Lead on one or more specialist areas of consultancy work, and provide specialist advice to clients and colleagues in these areas; 3.7 Continually review all programmes for which you are responsible, introducing new knowledge, technology and approaches for the benefit of clients; 3.8 Continually update and develop areas of personal and professional expertise in anticipation of the changing needs of Health & Social Care (HSC) clients. 4. Improving Services: 4.1 Deliver tailor-made consultancy programmes in a flexible and responsive manner; 4.2 Work with colleagues to deliver relevant, responsive and cost-effective programmes; 4.3 Participate in team teaching, where appropriate; 4.4 Deliver programmes in a manner which takes account of client group and range of experience; 4.5 Ensure that programmes are managed within a delegated budget and are delivered cost effectively and to the standards required by its clients 4.7 Generate business for the organisation to meet an annual agreed activity level; 4.8 Work within the standards laid down within the Unit s ISO 9001 Quality Management system; 2
3 4.9 Provide information in a timely manner to meet the information requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Education Unit and its clients, in particular, adhering to timescales for consultancy and course programme databases. 5. Demonstrating Personal Qualities: 5.1 Participate in individual staff performance review; 5.2 Work with line manager to ensure continued personal and professional development; 5.3 Participate, as required, in peer review teaching to ensure high quality delivery of all educational programmes; 5.4 Work collaboratively with teaching and other colleagues to ensure programmes are developed and delivered to the highest standard; 5.6 Develop and update teaching methodologies in line with modern learning strategies; 5.7 Undertake a mentoring/coaching role as required for student nurse education consultants within the Nursing & Midwifery Education Unit, and contribute to the education and development of other team members; 5.8 Maintain productive working relationships with colleagues, contributing as an effective team member to the work of the Nursing & Midwifery Education Unit. General Responsibilities: The duties of this post will evolve and change in response to on-going identified needs of core clients. The postholder is required to work to the mission and values of the Nursing and Midwifery Education Centre of Business Services Organisation (BSO) and maintain high standards of integrity and thoughtfulness towards clients and colleagues. The Business Services Organisation is a dynamic and progressive organisation. It has contracts with Health and Social Care Organisations and other clients in the public, private and independent sectors, to provide a wide range of nursing and midwifery educational support. We are seeking to increase our team of nurse education consultants and are looking for a self-motivated individual with a strong sense of teamwork to complement the existing workforce. 3
4 Nursing & Midwifery Education Unit PERSONNEL SPECIFICATION TITLE OF POST: Nurse Education Consultant: Full Time BAND: Band 7 ( 30,460-40,157) LOCATION: HSC Clinical Education Centre Altnagelvin Area Hospital Site ESSENTIAL CRITERIA: Currently registered as a Nurse with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) Primary degree in nursing or related subject; NMC Recordable teaching qualification or be willing to undertake such a programme; Three years experience as a practising nurse in the last five years; A high level of interpersonal and communication skills; An up to date knowledge of developments in clinical practice and education. Hold a full current driving license (valid in the UK) and have access to a car at the closing date or have *access to a form of transport which will permit the applicant to carry out the duties of the post in full. (*This relates only to any person who has declared that they have a disability, which debars them from driving) DESIRABLE CRITERIA: Experience of teaching students in the clinical setting; Knowledge of Health and Social Care reforms. Shortlisting & Interview A shortlist of candidates for interview will be prepared on the basis of the information contained in the application form. It is therefore essential that all applicants demonstrate through their application how and to what extent their experience and qualities are relevant to this post and the extent to which they satisfy each criterion specified. In addition to shortlisting, applicants should be aware that there may be a preliminary stage to the 4

Candidates who are shortlisted for interview will need to demonstrate at interview that they have the required competencies to be effective in this demanding leadership role.
