Page 2 of 11 Setting up VPN on Windows XP(Professional) Requirements: 1. These instructions are only applicable for a computer that has Windows XP Professional (if you have the Home version you will need to make allowances for it). Note that these instructions contain screen dumps that may not be identical to what you see. Where the screen dump wording and entries are different from what you see on the screen, ensure you use the instructions contained in this document. 2. You may need to have your Windows XP CDRom available. Overview of Virtual Private Network 3. VPN is a Virtual Private Network that uses secure connections to enable users to access their network resources securely. How to Setup a VPN Connection 4. To setup a VPN connection. Go to my network places, click View network connections and click Create a new connection from the left hand menu area of the window. 5. Click Next.

Page 3 of 11 6. Select the option Connect to the network at my workplace. 7. Click Next. 8. Select the option Virtual Private Network connection. 9. Click Next.

Page 4 of 11 10. Type in a name for the VPN connection. The name is just for your reference, it will not affect the installation. Click Next. 11. Select Do not dial initial connection. Click Next.

Page 5 of 11 12. In the Host name or IP address box type in vp1.acu.edu.au Click Next. 16. Select My use only. Click Next. 17. Select the option Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop Click Finish. If a box appears asking for login details select cancel. 18. VPN connection properties setup.

Page 6 of 11 19. Right click on the new VPN connection. 20. Click Properties. 21. Click on the Options tab. 22. Ensure that all 3 options in the Dialling options is ticked. 23. Click on the Security tab.

Page 7 of 11 24. Ensure Typical (recommended settings) is selected and Require data encryption (disconnect if none) is checked. 25. Click on the Networking tab. Highlight Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) and click Properties. Another window will pop-up. Click on the Advanced button. A third window will pop-up. Click on DNS tab. 26. Select Append these DNS suffix (in order): In the DNS suffix for this connection field, type in acustaff.acu.edu.au. Click Add. Another window will appear (screenshot below), add the domain name (acustaff.acu.edu.au) into the text field, click 'Add' again.

Page 9 of 11 27. Double click the VPN icon that you have setup. 28. Enter your ACU Network username, password and domain in the relevant fields when asked. This will be the same credentials that you use to login in the office. 29. Click Connect. Logon to the network will occur. To access ACU internal network resources, use below proxy setting if required: 30. Use the following proxy server as your browser proxy setting. Proxy Server: proxyone.mackillop.acu.edu.au 31. To setup the Proxy on your IE browser click on Tools Internet Options Connections and select the VPN connection that you created in Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings box. Click the button Settings 32. In the Proxy Server box, tick Use a proxy server for this connection. 33. In the Address field, type in proxyone.mackillop.acu.edu.au. In the Port field, type in 80 Click OK twice to exit and save. 34. If prompt by popup window asking for username and password: Enter your ACU domain\username & password and click OK.

Next to Folder: type in \\ campus file server name \ home drive name$ (note: Patrick staff members do not require the $ after their username) E.g. \\patstu1\s00035139$ E,g, \\nsw-st\josmigh$ for students for staff

Page 11 of 11 4. Click Connect using a different user name 5. Enter your ACU Network login domain\username and password E.g. student\s00035139 and password or acustaff\josmith and password 6. Click OK then Finish to map to your home drive.
