Welcome Welcome to North Kent College, whether you are returning or joining us for the first time, we hope that you will enjoy learning with us. This guide is designed to help you to understand and navigate the IT resources available to you while you study at North Kent College. Resources There is a number of IT resources at your disposal and depending on your course will depend to what extent you use them. But even if you are not doing a course that requires the use of IT there are many cool facilities and tools that you may wish to explore. The main resources are: Access to the College network from both in college and from home (using college equipment or your own) Access to 12 worth printing Access to the internet Access to email Access to online learning materials, ebooks and other resources Access to online course tracking Access to online Virtual Learning Environment called Moodle Many software packages for use in your course Your college identity While you study at North Kent College we will provide you with a College identity which will allow you to login and use the resources previously mentioned. This identity is linked to your enrolment and your network login / email / Moodle and other accounts will create automatically within 24 hours after you enrol and will expire automatically one month after your course has completed to allow you to complete any outstanding work and tidy up. Components of this identity are: YOUR Name The name given during enrolment (Printed on YOUR student ID card) YOUR student number the unique eight digit number created for you during enrolment (Printed on YOUR student ID card) YOUR College email address created using your name when your College identity is created We realise that you have an identity outside of the College and may have your own email address/s and social network accounts, but while at the College we will communicate with you using the College email account created for you. If you wish to connect your College email account (identity) to your private email account/s so that you do not miss anything, guides are available on Moodle. BE AWARE COLLEGE STAFF ARE ONLY PERMITTED TO COMMUNICATE VIA COLLEGE EMAIL ACCOUNTS (you will find them in the email address book) Student IT Guide Page 1
Security Student ID Card (Badge) The College has issued you with a security ID Badge (student card) that identifies you as a registered student and MUST be worn at all times Important Students allowing others to access college facilities using their ID badge may be liable for disciplinary action. Lost cards will cost 2 to replace from the Learning Technology Centres. If you forget your card at home you will need to go to security to have a temporary card issued that will disable your main card. Failure to return this temporary card to security will result in both being disabled and a charge of 2 to reactivate. Besides identification, your College Identity badge also provides you with other services as well as follows: Access to the entrance turnstiles at Dartford campus only Access to the FREE College shuttle bus services at Dartford only Access to the refectories (cafeteria) to buy food and drinks using cashless catering (below) Access to the College Learning technology Centre (Library) facilities Access to the mopiers (multi-function copiers) for print / scan / copy Cashless Catering The College has a cashless system to allow students to buy food and drink from the cafeterias using your College ID Badge. To top-up (add money) and use this system please login to the North Kent College Online Payment System at http://pay.northkent.ac.uk/onlineservices or from the College website http://www.northkent.ac.uk Home page footer 1. Create a Password 2. Select an amount to add 3. Select a payment method (Visa, Master Card) 4. Complete the transaction 5. Buy at the cafeteria Balance checkers are available in the cafeterias to make sure you have sufficient funds before entering the queue. Cash can also be added to your card from these machines in the cafeterias. More information on this system is available on Moodle. How to log in to the College Network using college equipment The college has a number of types of equipment available for you to use and will require a log in using your College identity. These are: Microsoft Operating System PCs Mac Operating System PCs Mac ios and Android data pads Konica Mopiers to print / copy / scan To log in to any device you will always use the same USER ID and NETWORK PASSWORD linked to your previously mentioned identity. YOUR USER ID = Student Number (usually an eight digit number on your student card) YOUR INITIAL PASSWORD = Password1 (with capital P and number 1 and you will be required to change this on first login) keep it safe and NEVER GIVE IT TO ANYONE. Your Password will expire and will need to be changed every 90 DAYS If you forget your password, please contact the staff in the Learning Technology Centre LTC for assistance. You will be shown how to login during your Learning Technology Centre (LTC) induction which will happen in the first few weeks of the academic year and as mentioned before, you will use this same USER ID and NETWORK PASSWORD to access all the IT systems that you have access to in the College including Moodle, Printing, Office 365 and computer access. Internet access While at North Kent College you will have access to the internet to do research and complete assignments. This is a free service available to students that is monitored and filtered. Should you wish to access a website that is blocked that you think should be open, then please ask your tutor to log a request with the IT Department including all the relevant information and the request will be reviewed. For you to access the internet, you will need to be logged in to the College network by one of the following methods: By logging into your College Network Account via a College PC By logging into your College Network Account via a College Mac PC By logging into the College network via the NWKCBYOD wireless network service from your private phone, tablet or laptop using your College Network Account details Microsoft Office 365 The College has provided the cloud service called Microsoft Office 365 for you to use while studying at the College. This service gives you access to the following services: Microsoft Outlook Email with 50GB storage Microsoft Outlook calendar linked to Email for setting appointments and creating schedules Microsoft Office Web Apps from a browser for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote so that you will always have access to the tools you need even if you don t have them at home FIVE full free downloadable version of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other applications for your Windows or Mac PC s at home. This will remain licenced for as long as you are registered as a students at the College. Microsoft OneDrive with 1TB storage (which is a lot) for files and photos that is accessible from any device as long as internet is available Many other Microsoft tools like Delve, Sway, Yammer and Video storage You can access Office 365 using https://login.microsoftonline.com or from the icon on your College PC desktop, using your College USER ID@nkc.ac.uk (identity) and College Network Password described earlier. For example if your USER ID was 12345678 then your Office 365 Login ID would be 12345678@nkc.ac.uk Your email address unless otherwise stated would be your name and surname (no spaces or dots between) @nkc.ac.uk For example if you were Daffy Duck then your email address will be daffyduck@nkc.ac.uk The first time you log into Microsoft Office 365 you will see a welcome screen (image below), which will give you support and instructions on how to setup and get started and will even help you get connected from your mobile phone. This screen also gives you the ability to download and install Microsoft Office onto your Windows or Mac PC s at home and launches the many applications from the app launch area Student IT Guide Page 4
This is where you can control your account and access the tools you need as follows: 1 = Outlook Email to communicate with teachers and fellow students 2 = Outlook Calendar to set up appointments 3 = Outlook People - address book and contacts 4 = Yammer internal college social networking 5 = OneDrive place to store files and photos so that you don t need to buy a USB memory stick 8 = Outlook Tasks things to remember from your email 9 = Delve Keeps track of shared and used files for easy access 10 = Video A place to save video files and share them similar to YouTube 11 = Word online to write that assignment 12 = Excel online for number crunching 13 = PowerPoint online the place to produce a presentation 14 = OneNote online cool for storing notes online Student IT Guide Page 5
Once logged in you can click on the waffle app icon in the top left corner to bring up the app nav bar Click on My Apps to access College web applications Microsoft Outlook Email This is a web app that functions as a full Microsoft Exchange email system allowing you to send and receive email, create folders, flag and categorise. Microsoft OneDrive for Business You will still have access to a very small home folder (500mb) on the college servers that will keep your preferences, favourites and desktop. Important - It is not advised to use this space to save files and you should store all coursework on OneDrive. Previous versions and deleted files can be restored up to 30 days after change or deletion. You have 1TB of storage space for files, folders and photos which are accessible from a range of devices including Mac, Android and Windows. Don t confuse Office 365 with Moodle which is a virtual Learning Environment where tutors will make resources available and may require you to upload assignments for marking. It is also different to eportfolio systems used in some departments for recording assignments and where you might be asked to store work as evidence. Once in OneDrive: To add files simply click on New Document (see image below) and select: Word Document to open a new Microsoft Word Document in Web App Mode Excel Document to open a new Microsoft Excel Document in Web App Mode PowerPoint - to open a new Microsoft PowerPoint Document in Web App Mode OneNote - to open a new Microsoft OneNote Document in Web App Mode Excel Survey - to open a new Microsoft Excel Survey Document in Web App Mode New Folder to create a new folder Once a file is on OneDrive you can open and edit using the included Web App or open in the actual Microsoft Office software on your PC. Delve (seen in the image below) is a useful tool to see files you have been working on or may have been shared with you. Student IT Guide Page 7

This software will already be installed on your PC at the College. Moodle (Virtual Learning Environment) When you open any browser at college you will start at the Student Hub http://start.northkent.ac.uk From the Student Hub you can access the Moodle (VLE) as well as many other tools and resources. Besides important news, this site will provide access to: Learning resources ebooks Office 365 Surveys Blogs Guides Other important information Moodle is also available from the footer of the College website http://www.northkent.ac.uk Login to Moodle using your Network User ID and Password to access course material and assignments From Moodle there is access to: Information with links to other sites Surveys Blogs Course materials Course assignments PRINTING The College provides each student with 12 worth of printing after which you will have to buy topup cards from the Learning Technology Centres. Top-up cards are available in 1, 2, 5 and 10 denominations. To redeem a top-up card log into PaperCut from the footprint widget on your desktop using your Network Login and Password (described earlier). Leaving the classrooms to print is not permitted and any print jobs sent will remain in the queue for 120 minutes (2 hours) and can be collected after class Printing From Private Mobile Devices Browse to http://w8sql1.northkent.ac.uk:9191 which can also be found in your Office 365 My Apps https://portal.office.com/myapps -> PaperCut Find Web Print in the menu on the left and then attach PDF documents (only) which can be printed and collected from the nearest Mopier. Word or Excel documents can be saved as PDF. Be careful to select the colour or B&W queue for the campus that you are at. Support If you have any issues with the resources or services provided by North Kent College, then please talk to your course teacher who will log a support request on your behalf. North Kent College has a zero tolerance policy regarding bullying and cyber bullying. If you are being threatened or bullied in any way, then again contact your course tutor who will report the matter to the IT Department where it will be investigated.
