ISBN-13: 978-1-4292-8390-8 ISBN-10: 1-4292-8390-4 Recommended Textbook: American Psychological Association. (2009). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). Issues in physical, cognitive, and social development from the individual and normative perspectives are explored. Some topics include the birth process, early cognitive and language development, gender socialization, the impact of parenting styles and moral reasoning. Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Explain the terminology and theories associated with human development. 2. Describe developmental processes and identify behaviors characteristic of certain ages. 3. Describe the complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors that influence developmental phases. 4. Examine development from a multicultural perspective. 5. Explain developmental processes in special populations. 6. Describe the physical, social and cognitive aspects of development from conception through middle childhood. Course Requirements This course is delivered via Blackboard. You must have access to a computer that is capable of running all Blackboard programs and access to the internet in order to complete the course. You must also activate and use your adams.edu email account. Class Communications I will attempt to answer emails as soon as possible. However, I will not be online at all hours of the day. You must give up to 72 hours for response time before sending a request a second time. Additionally, I will communicate with you using your adams.edu email account. If you use another account, set up your adams account to forward to this Adams State University Extended Studies Page 2 of 6 March 2015

other account. You are responsible for missed communications and if you select to not activate your adams account, you will miss class announcements and other important information. While this is a virtual classroom, the rules of respect are the same. I, as your professor, will respond to your inquiries as soon as possible. You, as a student, will need to show an understanding of the limits of an online classroom. If for any reason I will not have internet access for an extended time I will post an announcement on Blackboard and will send emails letting you know in advance. Note: If you are an international student, please realize that your professor is living in the Pacific Time Zone of the USA. Syllabus Quiz For this course you will find that when you start the only material you can see in the learning modules section is a "Syllabus Quiz." This quiz is not worth, rather it will unlock the first part of the course. The intention of the quiz is to make sure you have read your syllabus. The syllabus has answers to almost any question you could have about the course, but you have to read it. You will be able to take the syllabus quiz as often as you want need to, but you will not be able to pass it until you score at least 90%. Discussions For each of the four Modules for this course you will complete two discussions (for a total of 8). Each discussion will require you to answer specific questions in a thoughtful and complete manner. In addition, you are asked to add a substantive comment or follow-up to two of your peer's discussions. Each discussion is worth 15, for a total of 120. Quizzes For each chapter in this course you will complete one 10-point quiz. You will get one chance to complete the quiz, but I have given you time to examine your notes and text for potential answers. The quizzes are designed to be a study tool that will help prepare you for the exam at the end of each module of the course. You will have one hour to complete each quiz. Each quiz must be completed in a single sitting and will autosubmit at the end of 60 minutes if you have not completed it in the time allowed. You will complete 13 quizzes for a total of 130. Exams At the end of each Module of this course you will complete an exam that will cover all the material you have learned in that section of the course. Each exam is worth 100 and you will have 120 minutes to complete the exams. Each exam will cover only the chapters that you are responsible for during that part of the course (see the course schedule for review of chapters included in each section). You will only have access to Adams State University Extended Studies Page 3 of 6 March 2015

the exam once you have completed all of the quizzes and assignments for that module of the course. Once you have completed the exam, the next module of the course will open for you. There are four exams for a total of 400. Note: Please know that exams are not like quizzes. Quizzes are designed as study tools and you are allotted enough time to check your notes and text for potential answers. However, exams are designed to match the conditions of face-to-face courses. Although you will have access to your notes and text, you will not have enough time to look up every answer. It is assumed that you have read your chapters, studied your notes, completed all assignments and quizzes, and in general, have a working knowledge of the material included in the exam. Semester Paper For your semester paper you will be completing a standard research/literature review of any topic related to child development (up to 12 years of age). This paper will be in standard APA format. It will be a minimum of 6 pages in length, not counting your title or reference pages. You are expected to use at least 6 scholarly resources, one of which can be your text. You can locate scholarly journals and articles through the search engines in the Nielsen Library. This assignment has been broken into specific steps and are as follows: One Two Three Four Select and submit a topic idea for approval. This will allow me to make sure you have a topic idea that meets the needs of the assignment. Submit a list of 6 references. This will allow me to make sure that you are using scholarly resources and that your references are appropriate to the assignment. Complete an outline of the final paper. If you have never done an outline follow this link. Make sure the outline demonstrates that you have clearly thought out how you will organize your paper. The final step is to complete the summary. You need to complete a full literature/research review of the topic you selected. If you have never written a literature review before please see this guide. Another example can be found here. This assignment will also need to be completed in APA format. A guide to APA format can be found here. 10 15 25 100 Comprehensive Final After all modules for this course have been completed a comprehensive final will become available for you to complete. The final will cover all chapters from this course. It will consist of 130 multiple choice questions and 7 essay questions. You will have 240 minutes to complete this exam. Adams State University Extended Studies Page 4 of 6 March 2015

Additional Notes Grading For all assignments, you will be provided feedback in a timely manner. However, you must allow for a minimum of 96 hours for all submitted assignments to be graded. If you feel your assignments are not being graded fast enough, please contact me via email so that we may discuss the issue. Discussion Feedback For discussion, I will read all of them but will not comment on all of them. If you would like a response to your discussion or would like to draw my attention to a specific comment, please contact me and let me know. Communication with Individuals Other than You - Please note that as a faculty member of ASU, I am bound by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. Based on the rules of this law, I will not communicate with anyone outside of this course about your enrollment, activities, or grades. This includes your parents, whether or not they pay for your enrollment in this course. As an individual enrolled in this course, it is assumed that you are a responsible adult and you will be treated as such. If you want me to communicate with someone other than you, you must give permission to do so by completing a FERPA waiver and filing it with the Extended Studies Office. FERPA waivers are available online through the ASU website. If a FERPA waiver is not on file, I will not reply to any outside individual. Concerns and/or Complaints If you a have concern or complaint about the course, please contact me so that we can discuss it. If you do not feel comfortable discussing the issue with me, please contact my direct supervisor and Chair of the Psychology Department, Dr. Kim Kelso (kakelso@adams.edu). Submission of Final Grade Unfortunately, your professor is not the final stop for your grade. Your grade is submitted electronically to Extended Studies. That office then processes the grade, which can take up to five business days. Transcripts are not available until after this administrative process is done. If you have a deadline to meet, please add the time to process the grade into your timeline. An emergency on your part does not mean that the school will speed the processing of your grade.
