For others, none. COURSE TIME LIMITS: A minimum of eight weeks and a maximum of one calendar year (from the enrollment date) is the established time frame available for completion of the course. ISBN- 13: (You must buy the Bedford St. Martin s edition since it has critical essays we ll read.) The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Muriel Spark July s People, Nadime Gordimer Atonement, Ian McEwan Cloud Atlas, David Mitchell Short Oxford History of English Literature, Andrew Sanders Any recent writer s manual which explains MLA guidelines and formatting. Optional Textbook: Access to a library with secondary (scholarly sources) or to online libraries is helpful. CATALOG DESCRIPTION: In this survey of British and Anglophone literature, we ll cover roughly the years 1940 to today, a rich and varied period of British and Commonwealth literature and history. You ll become acquainted with (1) the major literary themes and the trends in the dominant genres of the periods we examine, and (2) some of the most widely regarded authors. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the time this course ends, students will: survey and appraise the major trends of British and Anglophone literature over the past 100 years, including Modernism, Traditionalism, & Post-Colonialism. examine some of the social, cultural, & historical forces and literary influences shaping the thematic concerns and stylistic experiments of the novelists and poets of this time period. analyze several critical essays that reflect a variety of theoretical approaches. further develop their critical thinking and writing skills. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: To earn a D or higher in this course, you must complete all of the required assignments, including all of the readings. Students have one year to complete the course. No extensions will be offered. Students may finish in as few as 8 weeks, but no fewer. Introductory Statement / Syllabus Quiz. These brief assignments shall be graded pass / no pass. Submitting them initiates this course; earning a pass allows you to start submitting work. If you earn a no pass, you will need to revise the work until it earns a pass. 3 Inquiry Responses: These are brief (1-2 page) discussion topics that ask you to consider themes, style, or subject matter of a selected author, group of authors, or particular texts Critical Response Papers: Four papers of 1000 words (min.) each. Final Exam: Short responses and an essay exam of words in which you respond to a set topic. Term Paper: This 10-page paper will explore one theme that applies to all three time periods. Readings: Please see the schedule. ** Please see requirements in more detail under Course Instructions. Computer/internet requirements: Technology would be helpful, but as this is a print-based course available to students who may not have such access, there are no computer / internet requirements. GRADE DISTRIBUTION AND SCALE: In alignment with ASU academic policies, no D may apply to a major or minor field. Grade Distribution: Inquiry Responses 20% of grade Response Papers 40% of grade Exam 10% of grade Term Paper 30% of grade Total 100% Grade Scale: A % A % B % B 82-85% B % C % C 72-75% C % D % D 60-65% F 59% and lower. Any offense may result in a zero for the exam or exercise in question and may result in failure of the course.
