1 HPPE 420 ETHICS IN SPORT MANAGEMENT Instructor Information Course Syllabus Instructor Aaron Tuioti-Mariner, MBA MA Office Location East Campus 110D Telephone Office Office Hours By Appointment Course Delivery Online, Open-Enrollment Credit Hours 3 Semester Hours Course Prerequisites BUS 103, HPPE 100 Course Time Limits The minimum course completion time for a three credit hour open-enrollment online correspondence course is six (6) weeks from the date of enrollment. All correspondence courses have a maximum course completion deadline of one year from the date of registration. Course Materials Textbooks can be purchased from the Adams State University Bookstore. To order textbooks or obtain information about book titles, you may go to exstudies.adams.edu and click on the "Undergraduate" or "Educators K-12" icon. Click on the "Bookstore" link. Click on the button that reads "Graduation, Books, Clothing & Merchandise". Click on "Books" in the green navigation bar. Select "DISTLEARN" from the department menu. ISBN-13: Course Description This course explores the myriad of moral and ethical issues pertaining to athletes, sports, and sport organizations and how these apply to professionals in the field of sport management. Current examples of ethical dilemmas in sport and sport management will be presented, and students will explore their personal ethics in relation to these issues. Curricular Relationships Required for all HPPE majors in Sport Management. Student Learning Outcomes At the end of this course, students will be able to: 1. Investigate and explain the ethical dilemmas and conflicts in sport and sport organizations; 2. Apply personal ethics to current ethical situations and questions found in sport; 3. Develop a code of ethics and personal philosophy as it pertains to their future sport management career; 4. Explain various ethical situations in the context of the sports and the sport industry; 5. Explore one s personal and professional ethics and values pertaining to the sporting industry, and describe how these ethics and values play a role in one s everyday social life and career; 6. Describe and examine current social issues concerning the behaviors and practices of those participating in sports and in the sport industry. 3 HPPE 420 ETHICS IN SPORT MANAGEMENT The Ethical Duties of Sports Agents Women in Sports Discrimination, and Title IX Ethical Considerations for Intellectual Property and Sports The Ethics of Fair Reporting and Defamation Course content may include additional resources, videos, and articles from review journals. Additional materials will be used at the Instructors discretion and will be provided to the class via Blackboard. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure they follow the course schedule discussed in class and on Blackboard about the additional required course material. Course Procedures Syllabus Quiz 2 Exams (Midterm and Final Exam) 2 Quizzes 15 Blackboard Discussions and Assignments 2 Current Events 2 Journal Articles 5 Ethical Cases Studies Syllabus Quiz The Agreement will be required prior to starting the course. Each student must read through the Course Syllabus, sign and submit the Syllabus Agreement provided at the end of the document by the first week after enrolling in the course. Exams There will be a total of 2 Exams during the course of the semester, which are a Mid- Term and a Final Exam. Each exam is worth 100 points and will cover chapters and cases covered in the course. The exams will consist of true-false, multiple-choice, matching, short answers, and essay questions. Quizzes There will be 2 Quizzes that will cover chapters, and lectures from the course. Each quiz is worth 50 points and may consist of true false, multiple choice, matching, short answer, or essay questions. Blackboard Discussions and Assignments There will be 15 discussions worth 20 points each; for a total of 300 points. Students are required to post a minimum of a 300-word discussion post. 4 Current Events HPPE 420 ETHICS IN SPORT MANAGEMENT Students are required to research a current event that relates to any topic that is discussed in class. 2 current event assignments are required for the course. Each current event requires a print out of an article, and a 1-2 page summary along with your concluding remarks. Current events can be used from any credible national media outlet such as ESPN, FOX, ABC, NBC, CNBC etc. Other sources may include review journals or credible articles. Blogs or Wikipedia will not be considered as a credible source in this assignment. More details will be provided on Blackboard along with a grading rubric. Journal Articles Students are required to submit 2 Journal Articles required for the semester. Each assignment will be a minimum of 3 5 pages in length. The assignment is worth 100 points each and will be turned in on the assigned due date. Students must research academic journals and find any article relating to topics covered in class. The student must summarize the purpose of the study, describe the conceptual framework along with its findings and conclusion. The assignment s format is highly structured, consisting of four parts, each of which needs to be numbered and labeled. More details will be provided on Blackboard along with a grading rubric. Ethical Case Studies Students will submit 5 ethical case studies from the textbook. Each ethical case study will be 2 pages in length and must include a cover page. Details of the case study will be posted on Blackboard. Plagiarism & Cheating Plagiarism is using the ideas or writings of another as one's own. While the most blatant form of plagiarism is copying another's entire paper word for word, it also includes using another's sentence, paragraph, or ideas without giving credit to that individual (i.e. without providing a reference). Rule of thumb: When in doubt, cite the original author. If the instructor discovers an instance of plagiarism, the student will receive a failing grade for the assignment, and may even receive a failing grade in the course (depending on the severity of the infraction). All written work is subject to plagiarism detection software review. Identified instances of cheating or plagiarism will follow the Academic Integrity statement in the Syllabus. Announcements, lecture notes, readings, and other documents will be periodically posted on Blackboard. It is your responsibility to check the site for any pertinent class information. You also have the ability to check your grade through the course site and are responsible for doing so at least every week to avoid grade discrepancies or possible errors and to check for notices of class changes. You will need your ASU username and password to access this site. Any communication outside of the classroom will be posted on or through Blackboard. It is REQUIRED that you check Blackboard regularly so that you do not miss any announcements, s, or messages that are posted. Be sure to also check your school s, as all class s that I send are through your Adams student account. Grade Distribution and Scale In alignment with ASU academic policies, no D may apply to a major or minor field.
