Nursing is defined, especially as it relates to promotion and restoration of health. Roles of the nurse are explored. Professional nursing is examined from historical and contemporary perspectives, including the philosophy and theoretical foundations that define professional nursing practice. Students will examine personal, professional and cultural values as influences upon nursing practice. The process of critical thinking is examined from multiple perspectives. 2 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of this semester, nursing students will: 1. Compare different nursing pathways to education. 2. Analyze nursing theories and philosophies that have influenced nursing education and practice. 3. Identify verbal communications for application in healthcare settings. 4. Examine the primary development phases of nursing informatics as a specialty area in nursing. 5. Demonstrate Internet and library knowledge of database research by writing a critical thinking paper using (2) online library databases. Completion of outcomes will be measured using a rubric. Students must earn at least 70% on each assignment, discussion, or quiz to complete the course. TEACHING METHODS This course is a web-based course taught online through Blackboard using learning modules. These modules are outlined in the course calendar in this syllabus and in Blackboard. The teacher s role includes facilitating the student s learning and serving as a resource person to guide the student in the learning process. Other teaching strategies include online assignments, online discussion boards, a scholarly paper, and quizzes. STUDENT PARTICIPATION Participation Policy: The student is expected to participate in weekly online discussions by making initial postings with (2) responses to other classmates, Course Etiquette: Students are expected to demonstrate respect for fellow classmates and the instructor throughout the course by responding in a thoughtful manner that does not criticize or demean anyone in the class. DROP POLICY: To drop this course, a student needs to complete the Drop/Withdrawal Request Form; this form is located on the University website ( ) or obtained in the Registrar s Office. Students must submit the signed and completed form to the faculty member for each course indicated on the form for their signature. The signature is not an approval to drop, but rather confirmation that the student has discussed the drop/withdrawal with the faculty member. The form is submitted to the Registrar s office for processing either in person, (Registrar@tamut.edu), or fax ( ). Incomplete forms missing any of the required information will not be accepted by the Registrar s Office for processing. It is the student s responsibility to ensure that the form is completed properly before submission. LATE WORK Work submitted after midnight of the due date will be subject to a 10% per day grade reduction unless arrangements are made with the course faculty prior to the assignment due date.
