Course Materials Textbooks can be purchased from the Adams State University Bookstore. To order textbooks or obtain information about book titles, you may go to exstudies.adams.edu and click on the "Undergraduate" or "Educators K-12" icon. Click on the "Bookstore" link. Click on the button that reads "Graduation, Books, Clothing & Merchandise". Click on "Books" in the green navigation bar. Select "DISTLEARN" from the department menu. 2 Required Textbook: MATH 106 COLLEGE ALGEBRA Michael Sullivan, College Algebra, 9th ed., plus MyMathLab/MyStatLab Student Access Card Package, Pearsons, ISBN-10: Note: You can buy only the access code for MyMathLab/MyStatLab without the textbook, as the access code comes with an ebook. Also, make sure you buy the access code for MyMathLab or MyLab, do NOT buy the access code for MathXL, as they are not the same thing. There are two tests which are online proctored. This means you will need a webcamera and a microphone in order to take both tests. Catalog Description An introduction to the basic techniques of algebra. Topics include functions (linear, quadratic, polynomial, root, rational, exponential, and logarithmic), systems of equations, matrix algebra, inequalities, and complex numbers. Optional topics include partial fractions, synthetic division, mathematical induction, sequences and series, and counting principles. Student Learning Outcomes The student will: be able to apply the fundamental concepts of analysis to solve problems: these concepts include: the natural, rational, real, and complex number systems; algebra of polynomial, exponential, and logarithmic functions; matrix algebra; and graphing. be able to think logically and to present material in a logical fashion. be able to make productive use of technology to solve problems and to gain mathematical insights Course Requirements Online Homework: Homework will be assigned using the "MyLab" website: You will need to go to blackboard, and access the class assignments. In the class assignments, you will need to enter the access code, which you have purchased. Then, you will be redirect into MyLab and you will be able to access the assignments. 3 If you have any problems signing in, you can contact Pearson's student support through their website at: or their tech support through their website: Each section on the book has an assignment. Therefore, there are 25 assignments you will responsible for. You will need to complete the first assignment in other to do the next assignment. You cannot skip homework. All assignments should be completed by 11:59 pm MST/MDT on the last day of the course. Please plan your schedule accordingly so you can complete all assignments on time. NOTE: Paper submissions of the homework assignments will NOT be accepted. Calculators: Students are expected to have a scientific calculator for this class. You do not need a graphing calculator, but you should have one that can handle scientific notation and trigonometric functions. You should have your calculator anytime you are working on this class, and you will be allowed to use your non-graphing calculator on exams. Do not use your cell-phone calculators, as they cannot perform exponential and logarithmic expressions, and they are not allow during the test. Discussions: There will be a question posted on each learning module, and you should post your answer in the discussion module as a new thread. You are encouraged to ask for help to other classmates or to your instructor. However, at the end of the day you should submit your final answer, and at least comment on two threads of your classmates. The comment should be clear and beneficial to the class. Each discussion is worth 1 point. In order to get full credit for the discussion, you will need to have the correct answer. If you attempt to answer the question, but do not get the correct answer, you will earn 50% of the credit, if you attempt again, and missed to correct your answer, you will earn 75%. You can only start two modules per week, otherwise your discussion will not count. Your discussions will NOT count if you wait until the last two weeks to start the discussions, even if you have the correct answer. All the discussions except for the last one will closed the week before the last day of classes. The discussions will be open according to the schedule. Participation: In this course we will cover many topics and so it is important that you keep with the class and not fall behind on your homework, learning modules, and the discussion threads. 4 Tests: There will be 4 online-class tests during the semester as indicated in the attached tentative class schedule. All tests will be administered through your MyLab website. The tests will be time-limited, and they will last 60 minutes. Once you start your test, you cannot close it, and go back, so plan accordingly your time. The test will be open as marked in the tentative schedule, and will remain open as marked on the schedule. Test #3 will be proctored online. This means you will need to create an account on: For more information about the proctor system, review the material on Blackboard on the same tab as the syllabus. The proctored test should cost around $14. Note, you will need a webcamera with a microphone. The test will focus on the material learned since the last test. However, working knowledge of all previously covered material will be assumed, and a question or two from previously tested material might be asked. For all the tests you will need to have covered the last homework of the chapter the test is covering. Otherwise, you will not be able to access the test. The test will include problems to solve, and may also include some combination of multiple choices, true/false, and fill in the blank questions, as well as short answer or essay-type questions. Problems and questions will cover applications of mathematics to specific fields as well as general theoretical understanding. All tests will be closed book. Final exam: The final exam will be cumulative, and will be 2 hours long. The final exam will be done through MyLab. The same setting as you had for Test #3. You will need to access the online proctoring, with the account that you have previously made on Kryterion. The cost for proctoring this test is about $20, as you have 2 hrs to complete the exam. The proctor will need a 48 hrs noticed in order to proctor. So make sure you check the schedule and plan when you are taking the final exam. This is a semester-based course, so you need to take the final exam by the last day of finals according to ASU exam schedule: Adams State University Extended Studies Page 4 of 5 August 2014

5 Remember, the final exam is closed-book, and once you start the exam you must finish in one-sitting. All tests including the final exam are offered one-time - no retakes are allowed, so please do not ask. Grade Distribution and Scale In alignment with ASU academic policies, no D may apply to a major or minor field.
