Introduction This specification is designed to provide you with everything you need to know to deliver this course at your centre. Award Overview Clinical guidelines identify the need for persons involved in the provision of healthcare to receive training in Basic Life Support, with annual updates. Award Essentials Learning Hours This Award is delivered over 2 learning hours Award Level The Award has been developed at Level 1. Entry Guidance There are no formal entry requirements for this Award. Progression Opportunities Progression options for learners achieving this Award are the Advantage Level 3 Award in Safe Handling of Medicines or a health and safety or an infection control related Award. Accreditation and Certification This Award has been endorsed and accredited by Advantage Accreditation. Certification by Advantage is available for students successfully completing the Award learning outcomes. Assessment The trainer will carry out continual assessment throughout the course Course Materials Once approved to deliver this Award, a centre will be provided with the following support information: Trainer Notes Syllabus Lesson Plan Presentation Activities/Case Studies Trainer Support pack Administration Support Award Aims The course has a number of set objectives: Understanding the role of the first aider, and the importance of infection control To assess the situation in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency The management of an unconscious casualty Administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking Award Learning Outcomes The learning outcomes of this Award are: Explain and demonstrate adult resuscitation techniques List the causes of unconsciousness Demonstrate the management of unconsciousness Demonstrate adult choking techniques 4

Trainer Requirements Nominated trainers must have competency in the area they are teaching, in addition to a teaching qualification. Applications will be reviewed individually to ensure compliance.
