Certificate in Management Studies (CMS) Kerry Barker Lecturer, CMS This is a development programme for existing or aspiring managers in industry, business or public and voluntary sectors. There are no formal academic entry requirements and experience of work in management roles is taken into account. We welcome applications if you are looking to develop your leadership and management career. The course lasts one year from September to June with regular weekly classes on Mondays between 6.00-9.00pm The aim of the course is to help you acquire and develop the skills and knowledge you need to become a more effective manager. It s a gateway to build on your career status and improve your management opportunities. It also provides you with the academic qualifications to back up your on-theground experience and enhance your professional profile. The main emphasis of the course is on the development of personal skills, techniques and qualities required to help you in your day-to-day management role. We value your own individual experience and seek to create the conditions for you to apply what you learn to your immediate work environment and make a real impact. You have the option to register with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) to achieve an additional Level 6 CMI qualification with no additional work. We attract students from a wide range of industry, public sector or entrepreneurial backgrounds at varying stages in their professional careers. You will need a degree or other professional qualifications and at least 2 years relevant experience at a managerial level. The course will take 15 months part-time. You ll have flexible study options available including block study (4 day teaching blocks ) or regular weekly classes on an afternoon and evening. We ll discuss with you what kind of attendance might be suitable for you to fit around work and personal commitments. This course introduces you to the activities, tasks and processes of organisations, increases your awareness of your personal managerial role and provides greater insight into management functions. You ll find yourself exchanging insights and ideas on contemporary issues with managers from other disciplines and business sectors, both private and public. A key module encourages you to focus on your personal development through reflective practice. You are encouraged to develop perspectives on the issues facing management both now and in the future. The MBA is the most globally recognised senior management qualification. /courses/ After already having a number of marketing qualifications I wanted a wider business knowledge that encompassed a whole range of skills rather than just one aspect of business. I like the teaching style, you are treated with respect and I think there is an underlying understanding that as students we ll also put in as much or more effort into studying the modules in our own time and so the lessons are quite relaxed. I have a study plan which I try and stick to and this helps me keep on schedule. Human Resource Management/ Development (HRM/HRD MA) Mark Horan Course Leader HRM/HRD MA This course was developed for those who have completed the professional qualifications for Graduate or Chartered Membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), or have a Postgraduate Diploma in HR. The course will take 1 year part-time. Enrolment and induction takes place in September of your year of study and each academic year runs until July. The taught part of the programme will be delivered in two blocks of two days plus an additional half day. Attendance for the dissertation consists of about six meetings with a supervisor. This arrangement can be very flexible and is designed for people with busy careers. The module also provides support in completing the planning and research necessary for your dissertation. Semester Two is devoted to the dissertation. You choose a topic appropriate to your pathway, research it and present your findings in a thesis format. A tutor will be allocated to provide advice. Throughout you will be taught using a mixture of lectures, case studies, videos, projects and student discussion. Our links with the West Yorkshire CIPD branch offers additional networking, advice, mentoring and updates from the profession. This course is ideal for ongoing Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and gives you the opportunity to undertake research into an organisational HR problem. Healthcare Management MSc Dr Leigh Morland Senior Lecturer, Healthcare Management MSc This course is ideal if you want to improve the quality of management as a profession within healthcare settings. You will need an honours degree (or overseas equivalent) and a minimum of three years appropriate management or business experience from a health or social care context. We do consider applicants without a degree or equivalent qualifications if you can demonstrate a potential to meet the demands of the programme. Doctor of Business Administration/Doctor of Public Administration (DBA/DPA) Dr Annie Yeadon-Lee Course Leader, DBA/DPA This course is for ambitious managers who want to develop professional practice at the highest level. You will need a UK Master s degree or equivalent, preferably in a Leadership or Management related discipline. In addition you will need at least three years postqualifying experience and be currently employed at a middle or senior level. The course takes a minimum of four years, up to seven years. Action learning sets run up until the end of Year Four. You ll be required to attend one day per month for nine months commencing in October of each academic year. Year Two has an additional two blocks of two days teaching and learning in Term One. The flexibility of the programme means you are not away from your place of work for extended periods of time. Years One and Two of the course focus on taught modules in Business Research Methods, Reflective Leadership, Data Collection and Analysis and the development of your Research Proposal in preparation for your thesis. A range of teaching and learning methods are used including lectures, seminars, workshops and action learning sets. We employ a variety of assessment methods including assignments, business cases, a publishable journal article, a personal impact statement and finally a doctoral thesis accompanied by a viva voce examination. Legal Practice Course (LPC) Angela Grunert Senior Lecturer, LPC This course puts you on the road to becoming a fully qualified solicitor. You will need to have satisfied the requirements of the academic stage of legal education (typically holding an LLB(Hons), Common Professional Examination (CPE) or Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)). In certain situations nongraduates may also be eligible, please contact us for advice. The course will take 2 years part-time (on one afternoon and evening per week). Our students benefit from networking, mentoring and training opportunities through our innovative Partners in Law scheme. We have a realistic mock court room where you can hone your debating skills and take part in mock legal hearings as well as dedicated LPC teaching rooms. The LPC course prepares you for training to be a solicitor. Graduates from the LPC can continue their legal education through our LLM courses (see pages 20-21). The LLM is recognised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority for Continuing Professional Development purposes. All my lessons are in the Business School, and we have a mock court room which we use for skills based assessments such as interviewing and advocacy. In litigation we do a lot of mock trials, so having this room is perfect. We do a lot of small group work which means you have to get involved with everyone, which is great because we support each other. In the long-term I d like to open my own firm once I ve completed my LPC. The course consists of two stages, which can be studied simultaneously. Stage 1 consists of the 5 Core Practice Subjects: Business Law and Practice, Property Law and Practice, Civil and Criminal Litigation, Wills and Administration of Estates and Professional Conduct and Regulation along with Legal Skills. Law (LLM), Commercial Law (LLM), International Law (LLM) Tina Hart Course Leader, LLM This course is for law (or related subject) degree graduates who want to engage in a critical analysis of a range of legal subjects. If you have a non-law degree you can access the course by taking an Introduction to Law module. The course will take 2 years part-time. As well as taught study, distance learning options are also available. Studying for an LLM will enable you to engage in deeper study and engage in critical discourse in the legal subject area. Depending on your chosen LLM route this course offers opportunities for those who want to work for international organisations, NGOs and governments with knowledge and expertise gained on the International LLM route. The Commercial Law LLM is ideal for those who want to specialise in commercial legal practice. The general LLM route is attractive if you want to work in a range of organisations such as NGOs, international institutions, government and provides a means of analysing the way in which the law impacts on their work. Your dissertation project will be an opportunity to apply a research based study to a critical understanding of a legal area of your choice. We also offer a Legal Practice (Top-up) LLM course if you have completed the Legal Practice Course (LPC), the Bar Professional Training Course, are a Fellow of ILEX or qualified solicitor or barrister. Once you ve submitted your application form we ll usually ask you in for a quick chat or give you a call if we need to clarify anything. Otherwise we ll send you acknowledgement that we offer you a place on your chosen course. To enrol you ll need to attend an enrolment day at the University, in September of each year of study, with your offer letter and any required ID and financial arrangements. Your University ID Once you ve enrolled you ll be issued an ID card with a unique student number. This number will form your University e-mail account login. The card gives you access to study resources at the University (such as the library) as well as support services offering student advice. It s also needed to active our attendance monitoring system which you swipe in the classroom. Learning resources You ll have full access to the University library which has a wealth of books, journals and online resources. You can also access an archive of journal articles and other academic resources from home through our Portal Plus online resource. We also use an online system called Unilearn through which you can access all the information you need about your course, including specific module information, links to resources and details about assignments and deadlines. Fees At present there is no government tuition fee support for part-time courses. Many of our students seek financial support or sponsorship from their employers, in recognition of the way in which part-time study can have immediate benefits in the workplace or be part of longer term career development. If you need help making a case for financial contribution from your employer, just contact us and we ll help to prepare a case based upon the features of the study programme and how that can impact in your day-to-day role and have real benefit for your employer. Fees can be paid in up to four instalments but the first payment will need to be made on your day of enrolment (or you could produce a letter of financial support from your employer, and we ll follow up with your employer to make arrangements to pay the fees). Social and sports resources As a student at the University of Huddersfield you will have access to all the social facilities on campus (there are a number of cafes and restaurant areas) during their opening hours. We also have an excellent (and good value) gym, squash courts and weekly exercise classes which you can take advantage of (through membership or individual bookings). Car parking There is no dedicated space for students to park on campus, however after 5pm part-time students can generally get access to park on the University campus.
