3 Department of Industrial Psychology and People 1. Who are we? Today s challenging work context with its unprecedented demands requires People Professionals who are outstanding leaders, both professionally and organisationally. As leaders in their own right, People Professionals must be able to discover possible futures and to realise a shared, chosen desirable future for their organisations with and by their people. In an intellectual capital-based world where 85% plus of organisations assets are intangible, people have taken centre stage in ensuring the sustainable future success of their organisations. People probably make up 70% of the intangible assets of an organisation. People fulfil the undisputable central role of value unlockers and wealth creators in their organisation s future success. The mission of the University of Johannesburg s Department of Industrial Psychology and People is to develop outstanding People Professionals, who are up to the critical leadership task of making their organisations and people future fit as they move into a radically different future. The Department is independently acknowledged as one of the top departments in its field, nationally and beyond not least because of our cutting-edge research into pressing people issues. The Department has a comprehensive offering at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, both in traditional university qualifications and professional development opportunities, as illustrated below. Our respective programmes and qualifications are linked to form interconnected career paths. Asset in a highly competitive industry of asset management and mutual funds, and where hundreds of firms compete daily to serve investors, those who perform well for shareholders gain assets and profits. It is therefore highly relevant that HR managers and practitioners devote all their time and energy to make sure the job is done correctly, because it is about serving, adding value and processing all this by the most important asset of any business, its people. It underlines the significant personal and professional stake HR managers and practitioners have in the business s success or failure. Human s Practitioners are currently expected to act as business leaders who turn organisational goals into practice and who facilitate change in organisations. This could be achieved by enhancing the intangibles like talent, a shared mindset and a culture of learning and employee commitment. An additional management qualification will give you access to a number of diagnostic skills to assist the organisation in this regard, since managers all over the world are in a desperate struggle for talented workers. Many are responding with an all-out effort to recruit and attract the right candidates. However, they can more easily compete in this tough job market by concentrating on retaining the good workers they already have. So, if you really would like to invest in yourself and a career focused on managing people processes for optimal organisational performance, then you have to consider to further your education and to enrol for one of the BCom/BA Honours degrees we offer. CURRICULUM The programme design and content ensure a combination of theoretical depth and advanced practical application, as well as honing specific performance enhancement skills. The first study year covers HR in general, while students in their second study year can specialise in one of the following fields of study: Human s Employment Relations Human s Development First year (All students) Human : The Field Strategic Human Research Methodology Financial (for Non- Financial Managers) Organisational Behaviour Leadership Development 5

8 6 Second year (Specialisation): Human Change Performance Learning and Development Employment Relations Manager Electives (select 2 modules): Labour Law Diversity and Business Ethics Leadership Second year (Specialisation): Employment Relations Labour Law Employment Relations Leadership Performance Electives (select 2 modules): Assessment Diversity Change and Business Ethics Second year (Specialisation): Human Development Design and Development Assessment Learning and Development Performance Electives (select 2 modules): Diversity Leadership and Business Ethics Change What are the admission requirements? To gain entry into any of the three honours degree courses: A potential student should be in possession of a BA/BCom qualification on NQF Level 6 with Industrial Psychology or Human as major modules on NQF Level 6. A module in analytical techniques or statistical methods on NQF Level 5 is strongly recommended. Access to the Internet and Computer literacy is compulsory. An average of 65% will allow a potential student to apply for the honours course. Duration The qualification is presented through flexible learning over a two-year period (limited/part-time contact). This includes a compulsory one-week study school at the beginning of each semester, and compulsory lectures and assessments on selected Saturdays. How will you be trained? The use of technology (for example the Internet, , Edulink, etc.) is a critical component of the tuition model and is employed to deliver study material, selfassessment measures and opportunities for interactive discussions. Please note: Access to the Internet, or opportunities to gain access to the Internet, are prerequisites for enrolment in the qualification.

9 What is the language of tuition? Classes and study material are presented in English but students are welcome to participate in both English and Afrikaans. How will you be assessed? Formal examinations are set for each module, which are written on completion of the respective modules, generally twice a year (during May and October). The final pass mark is comprised of 50% of the semester mark and 50% of the examination mark. A sub-minimum of 40% must be obtained during the examination, and a final pass mark of 50% is required. International Students Please note that international students must first contact the International Office (Tel: ) or send an to international@uj.ac.za before submitting an application. The general deadline for international applicants is 12:00 on the last Friday of August of each year. Application closing date Before 30 September of each year Who can be contacted? 10 8 7. BA/BCom (Hons) INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY What are the qualification objectives? Managers all over the word are in a desperate struggle to acquire talented workers. If you would like to invest in yourself and a career focused on work and the workplace, then you have to consider to further your education and to enrol for the postgraduate BCom (Hons) Industrial Psychology degree we offer. Industrial and Organisational Psychology is a specialised field within the larger discipline of Psychology that focuses on the people and the workplace. This postgraduate degree will increase your understanding of how people relate to work settings for the ultimate purpose of bringing about improvement for all concerned. The aim of the qualification is to develop the applied competence of mastering analysis, interpreting and understanding of Industrial Psychological principles and methods. It will further develop your intellectual and professional skills. This qualification will prepare you to reflect on your own psychological and human resource management applications and to assess the effect thereof in the holistic context of Industrial Psychology within your everyday life. Additionally, it will prepare you for further postgraduate studies in Industrial Psychology. CURRICULUM Contemporary Issues in Organisational and Career Psychology Industrial Psychological testing and assessment Organisational Wellness Research Design and Analysis: Quantitative Research Contemporary Issues in Personnel Psychology Psychometric Theory Research Design and Analysis: Qualitative Research Industrial Psychological Research Project Industrial Psychological Practice What are the admission requirements? A potential student should be in possession of a BCom/BA degree on NQF Level 6 with Industrial Psychology as major module with at least 65% average. Since only a limited number of students can be accommodated annually, applicants will be subjected to a selection process. Duration We offer a fulltime (one-year) and parttime (two-year) option
