2 The Centre for Public Health is a vibrant research and teaching community working at a local, regional, national and international level. We also offer expertise in a range of methodologies including health, research, evaluation, systematic reviews, surveillance, audit, epidemiology and statistics. The Centre is committed to a multi-disciplinary approach to public health and works in partnership with health services, local authorities, judicial bodies, environmental services and community groups. In the 2014 REF, some 68% of LJMU s healthrelated research was considered world leading or internationally excellent. This research helps ensure our postgraduate courses are at the forefront of developments in the field and that students have an opportunity to work alongside leading experts. International Public Health opens one s eyes to other determinants of health, and the existing inequalities that exist between countries. My experience at LJMU has been wonderful. 3 Research expertise The Centre for Public Health has an international reputation for research with areas of particular expertise including: n Drugs: Supporting evidence-based drugs policy through epidemiology, monitoring, evidence, review, intervention evaluation and primary research n Alcohol: Evaluating interventions, reviewing evidence and delivering original research into alcohol consumption and harm across a range of populations and settings n Sexual Health: Providing intelligence, evaluation and research across a range of sexual health-related topics to support policy and service planning n Violence and Unintentional Injury: Supporting evidence-based violence prevention at local to global levels through original research, intelligence, evidence review and intervention evaluation n Intelligence and Surveillance: Providing data collection and monitoring systems to support public health reporting, evidence review, evaluation and research City centre facilities The Centre for Public Health is located in LJMU s City Campus, right in the heart of Liverpool city centre. Facilities within the campus include the Avril Robarts Library, open 24/7 during semesters, IT Zones, social spaces, high quality teaching facilities and lecture theatres plus a range of cafés. Postgraduate Education in Public Health Studying public health at this worldclass research centre enables you to experience applied public health research first hand. All students on our postgraduate taught programmes study together and have access to staff support, irrespective of route and mode of study, whether you are full or part time or taking a CPD course. You can also take part in a number of research networking events organised through the Centre, including postgraduate student-led seminar/presentations and Monthly Research in Focus Seminars. Full time students have the opportunity to develop their research skills working alongside experienced senior research staff within a placement setting in the Centre. Many students are already working in a public health, health or social care context. Our programmes will enhance your knowledge and skills of public health and enable you to apply these skills in the workplace. The development of such skills and our postgraduate qualifications will enhance your career development and open up new opportunities for you. Others join the programmes with less experience in the world of public health but are aiming to hone the necessary skills and knowledge to begin a career in this area. Staff will be happy to support you in gaining placements and experience of working in a public health setting (on a voluntary basis). This can be done as part of a module, such as Work Based Learning/Independent Study or simply for experience of working in public health.

Admission to the programme would include an opportunity for a face-to-face discussion and a review of your professional portfolio. The relevance of public health has increased in recent times. The growing concern over the cost of curative health services, the problem of prolonged poor health and chronic disease and the increase in health risk behaviours means the need for public health strategies is greater than ever. This well established course offers you an opportunity to study public health in a multi-disciplinary and research-informed learning environment. This approach will enable you to view population health from a number of different perspectives and enhance your understanding of the people and processes involved in promoting public health and reducing health inequalities. The public health setting is one that is ever-changing and increasingly complex. As such this programme seeks to provide public health knowledge and skills underpinned by the Public Health Training Curriculum (2010), the Public Health Skills and Career Framework (2009) and the Public Health Outcomes Framework (2012). Modules typically include: Epidemiology, Public Health: Policy and Practice, Health Improvement, Health Protection, Work Based Learning and Violence. An improvement in population health is increasingly recognised internationally as a key element of economic and social development in low and middle income countries. The public health approach is critical to improving population health and developing mechanisms to measure and monitor health and disease status. There is also a need for public health to advocate a strategic response to the burden of ill health and disease in low resource settings. Our programme offers a broad based understanding of health and particularly the social and environmental determinants of health. MODULES INCLUDE: Epidemiology, Public Health: Policy and Practice, Health Protection, Global Health, Tobacco and Alcohol Control and Violence. Public Health (Addictions) MSc n Full time (1 Year), Part time (2 years minimum) n Standard Entry: An honours degree in any health related discipline n Non-standard: Students with relevant experience in the public health sector but with limited formal qualifications are welcome to apply. Admission to the programme would include an opportunity for a face-to-face discussion and a review of your professional portfolio. The development of this new programme route in public health presents an opportunity to share knowledge and develop skills in understanding and addressing the impact of addictions on public health. In line with the other routes and via shared modules, there is an opportunity to study the wider determinants of health, government policy and examine the evidence base of harms and risks, in relation to addictions, through epidemiological studies. As with the other two routes, you will develop research skills as a pre-requisite for a dissertation project. Modules typically include: Understanding Addiction, Addiction: Policy and Interventions, Epidemiology, Public Health: Policy and Practice, Tobacco and Alcohol Control and Violence. Postgraduate Continuing Professional Development (CPD) The Centre provides excellence in workforce training in the public health sector. This includes the provision of CPDs (taken from the MSc Public Health programmes) and bespoke training. 5 Postgraduate Research (MPhil/PhD) In the 2014 REF, some 68% of LJMU s healthrelated research was considered world leading or internationally excellent. The Centre for Public Health is at the forefront of applied research and plays a significant role in the University s research strategy. The Centre is firmly committed to a multi-disciplinary approach to public health. It works with international organisations such as the World Health Organization and national bodies, such as the National Institute of Health Research, Department of Health, Home Office and National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). On a local level, the Centre not only collaborates closely with health services but with local authorities, judicial bodies, environmental services and community groups. A diverse range of studies are currently being undertaken by 30+ PhD students within our thriving and rapidly expanding PhD student community. These include but are not limited to: n A life history study of the emergence of the substance misuse recovery movement in North West England n The effect of smokers harm reduction strategies on the levels of second hand smoke in the home n An exploration of the female use of unlicensed weight loss drugs n Identifying the knowledge and skills training needs of public health workers in low and middle income countries, with a specific focus on public health workers in rural Cambodia n Experiences of alcohol use and hepatitis C among current and recovering injecting drug users in Merseyside and the implications for treatment services n Understanding substance use and mental health needs of male Irish Travellers The opportunities to attend conferences, go to training sessions and expand my development as a researcher have been brilliant. Additionally, having a designated PhD student room has been vital in being able to engage with other students ensuring I never feel isolated during the PhD process. Home/EU applicants International applicants English for Postgraduate 20 week course: 6,000 Studies courses 12 week course: 3,600 6 week course: 1,800 Taught postgraduate programmes Full time: 5,500 11,000-12,000 (PgCert, PgDip, LLM, MA, MSc, MRes) Part time: per credit Fees vary depending on whether you are (Masters programmes consist of studying a class or lab-based programme. 180 credits) Research degrees Full time: 3,845 12,000 MPhil/PhD Part time: 1,923 Writing up: 360 Taught Masters Scholarships Over 100 new scholarships worth 10,000 each will be available to eligible students starting taught Masters programmes at LJMU in the 2015/2016 academic year, as part of the government match-funded Postgraduate Support Scheme. The funding offers graduates a fantastic opportunity to secure a Masters qualification in any discipline without added financial worry. To qualify for the Postgraduate Support Scheme you must be resident in the UK/EU and have paid the higher undergraduate tuition fee since Further eligibility criteria will apply. PhD Scholarships Support for full-time three year studentships is available via our LJMU PhD Scholarship scheme. Studentships are available for applicants in all disciplines where excellent research is being performed. n Fully-funded three year PhD Scholarships comprise: annual fees (currently 3,845 per year), a contribution towards running costs ( 1,500 per year) plus an annual stipend ( 13,863 per year, normally awarded tax free). n Fees-only Scholarships are also available. All applications for PhD Scholarships must be submitted via your future Director of Studies. The number of Scholarships available is limited. International Scholarships LJMU offers a range of scholarships for international applicants accepted onto taught masters programmes (excluding distance learning programmes) and research degrees. These scholarships take the form of tuition fee waivers. Current LJMU international students and alumni interested in pursuing postgraduate study and research at the University are eligible to apply for these scholarships along with new applicants. For full eligibility criteria and details on how to apply, go to: English for Postgraduate Studies Bursary A Bursary is also available for international students who must complete the six week English for Postgraduate Studies course to improve their IELTS score by 0.5 prior to enrolling on their postgraduate course or research programme at the University. This course is run by LJMU s International Study Centre: This Bursary is worth 700 and takes the form of a tuition fee waiver, which will be deducted from your tuition fee when you progress onto your Masters degree or research programme. You do not need to complete the online scholarship application form to receive this Bursary.
