9 MA STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP Develop specialist knowledge in management that will help your career progression. YOUR PROGRAMME IN FOCUS Research Methods THE PROGRAMME Organisational Theory and Design In an increasingly competitive job market this Chartered Management Institute (CMI) accredited MA programme in Strategic Management and Leadership will aid your professional development and help you to stand out to employers. It enables you to develop specialist knowledge in an area of management that is of particular interest which will help your career progression. The core focus of this part-time programme will be on the development of the leadership and management skills required to develop strategic solutions to complex business challenges. The programme consists of three individually assessed modules: Research Methods (10 credits), Organisational Theory and Design (10 credits) and a Dissertation (50 credits). The Research Methods module is particularly geared towards preparation for, and successful completion of, high quality, rigorous and systematic management research required for a dissertation. Dissertation Organisational Theory and Design seeks to provide a framework for the understanding and analysis of organisations with particular reference to organisational design, processes and change. The dissertation comprises 20,000 words and, in addition, you produce a reflective practice essay that reviews your personal development arising from the programme. The programme has an explicit "business practice based" orientation for students in work. Whilst required to focus on the generic area of Strategic Management and Leadership in the completion of the dissertation, you are encouraged to specialise in organisation specific and sector specific topics which directly relate to your work environment. Upon graduation from this master s programme, if you are not already a member, you may apply for membership of the Chartered Management Institute. If you have a minimum of 10 years management experience you may also be eligible to become a Fellow of the Institute. COURSE LENGTH MA: 12 months ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Applicants are welcome from any academic discipline, as well as those in work and seeking continuing professional development. Applicants will normally be managers or administrators with at least three years work experience. Applications for entry onto the programme will be made through the submission of a portfolio which focuses on the mapping of Accredited Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) against specified learning outcomes. Such applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. HOW TO APPLY Apply online through UKPASS, please see page 8. KATHERINE COWAN MA Coaching and Mentoring Practice I chose Oxford Brookes because I knew it had a good reputation; several coaches with whom I consulted spoke very highly of the Oxford Brookes course. Also, the learning facilities, particularly the library and the virtual learning environment, are excellent and accessible. The quality of the tuition was very high and the approach to delivering the course was engaging, motivating and appropriate to people who are studying and working at the same time. You have a degree of self-direction and autonomy in your learning, but you are also very well supported. As an independent consultant and coach working with individuals and organisations, having a master s degree from Brookes shows clients that I have undertaken a serious level of training. 15
